US Warship Fires on Pirates!

the thing is.. we can't be NOTORIOUS pirates as in the other times.. I mean, we can't be a LIVING legend. We could do something criminal on sea, yea lol of course, we'll be pirates. But I bet that in not even a month, we are going to get arrested or we'll swim with the sharks lol(they will get our position with a satellite in no time..). Today, it's the landlubbers that are the more difficult to track down, and the more dangerous. There are more and more trades that are done by airplanes. HEY! why not to do like.. a pirate plane? XD that would be nice.. if we manage to BOARD other planes loooooooooool (and get back on ours after we plunder it.. ahhaha).
We will probably look like that:

Look at that, I've found an example of the tools modern pirates use:

The tools of the trade haven't changed much, have they?

I doubt that seagoing privateering would pay enough today to make it worthwhile. The only contracts today that would pay you enough to maintain a gunboat would be in war zones, where it would only be a matter of time before you met up with something WAY out of your class (like a Silkworm missile fired from shore, or a submarine-launched torpedo).

Modern high-seas piracy seldom pays either ... but if you're a terrorist organization already, you don't really care about high returns - if you can effectively break even (not counting loss of free labor i.e. nutjobs) and inflict some chaos along the way, it's working. The effective port blockade will starve more legit organizations, and so let your buddies take over the rest of the country.

Agreed. These days money is shifted by wire or satelite which means you're left to looting a cargo ship carrying widescreen tvs or stereos. I'm sure decent money could be and is being made, but the expenses of the operation and greater exposure due to modern technology means it's a better option just to stick to land-based operations.
