Unusual lag/chug problem on map mode and when dispay dialog

Well, the game seems to work perfectly except I have painfully long chug/lag issues when I click to go to the map. It takes a long time to load the map (about 16

seconds) and then clicking on anthing else once there will take another 16

seconds before you can see the result of the click. The lag happens the most

frequently immediately after pressing 5 on the numpad to initiate a ship battle. It

also occasionally happens after talking to the barmaid (because she displays a

route on the map for you with a moving graphic). I've also noticed it when

transferring to land from ship and back, and as you get a dialog box telling you

you're Far Out To Sea. In contrast, once the ship battles start, the game is

perfectly smooth. And I can visit various people in the ports with ease even

between menus. It seems as if the game only lags at certain points in the game.

Sailing and maneuvering in the open seas shows no lag at all nor do the actual

battles once you're in one. I have experimented with the graphics settings, but

setting them to `all-high` and then to `all-low` does not seem to affect the lag in any

way, so I'm wondering if there might be some other conflict or even if this is the way it's supposed to be because my processor isn't fast enough. I have performed all

the things I can think of try to combat this problem, though maybe it's just a

hardware limitation of my system (though I can play `Half-Life` 2, Doom III,

`Eve-Online`, City of Heroes, Mafia, Desert Combat, Call of Duty and UT 2004 with

no similar lag problems on the same machine). I have installed current video card

drivers, have installed current sound drivers, I have service pack 2, Windows is

defragged, I have unneeded programs turned off, I've reinstalled the game, I've

tweaked my video card for Performance and made sure all Anisotropic and

Antialiasing are Off, have the right version of Direct X, I've checked to make sure the `cd-running` light isn't on during

this chug thinking it might have been the cd drive doing the chugging, and I really

can't think of any thing else to try. What's weird is that the game really looks,

sounds and plays fine, even at the highest settings, EXCEPT for key moments

like using the map. The chug on the map page is so bad that it is basically

unusable. Clicking the Zoom In or Zoom Out button means a 16 second chug for

every click. I have Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2, AMD Athlon XP with 1GB

dual channel DDR400, plenty of hard drive space, 128 MB GeForce 4 TI 4600

with current drivers, SB Live! with current drivers, 52/24/52X `CD-RW` drive, and

my operating system generally runs smoothly and with few problems. I'm also

using antivirus software, firewall, etc but it doesn't seem to make a difference

when they are turned off. When I run the game in Safe Mode, it does the exact

same thing with the chug just with Safe Mode's settings this time. I love this game

and will continue to play it regardless of the chug, I just wish I could find a

`work-a`-round. I love it when you conquer a ship with a lot of treasure and your see

your `coinage-meter` going higher and higher and you hear that nice coin

sound....the feeling at that moment is reminiscent of `end-of`-level coinage in Sonic

the Hedgehog. Very satisfying. Heh. I also love to blow ships apart. The graphics

in the battle sequences are astoundingly good, especially pieces of ships

smashing apart and little sailors flying through the air with their painful little cries.

Great game, I agree with PC Gamers' rating, I think they gave it a 91%. It is also charming and fun and has good humor.

I have the same problem. The game runs fine and lag free until the map is displayed for whatever reason. I have no idea whats going on. I have a Nvidia Geforce 5500 and XP media center, if that makes any difference.

i have the same problem. I hope Sid Meier will release a patch soon, this game is the most buggy piece of Software i ever bought

I was having horrible lag problems with my GeForce4 Ti 4200, so I bought a brand new GeForce FX 5700 LE with 128M and I am getting the same issue as you. All of my other problems cleared up, but after going through almost everything you tried, I still get the "Map Lag" and it is frustrating as anything.

Honestly, 2 months without a patch considering how many people are having issues, specifically graphics lag issues, that are blatantly not driver or card specific could be considered fraudulent on the part of Atari considering how far beyond their minimum specs my system is and still running into gameplay issues.

I am going to try to back my drivers off to the time when they started programming on the game and see if that works. I will let you know. Other than that, I have no more ideas except mail bombing Atari support.

Nope, that didn't work. It had helped with my old card, but then again, my old card wasn't having any troubles with the map, just everything else. At least I don't spontaneously reboot anymore. I still don't like it though. I would understand if I weren't able to run any other games, but I am having no problem with games much more graphically intense than this one. I think the biggest shame is the fact that they were able to get a map that worked when there was only 64 bits to work with on my Commodore, but now I have over a Gig of Memory, plus a new 128M video card, and it still doesn't work. I am slightly peeved. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

You got Windows? That's buggier than anything in the world!

I can play every newer game on my Computer, which need all more grafical Power than Pirates ! The only game that lags is Pirates ! Its most anoying, i really like pirates but with this bug its just not playable. If you play one hour you will waste 20 Minutes with waiting !!!

I only use Windows for playing, most time i use my MAC. But some games are not available on MAC, so i have to use this Buggy OS sometimes.

Excuse my ignorance, but what bugs are there with Windows? I have used it since Windows 95 and never had a problem with the OS itself. It has always been the game or other software that has a problem.

The Workflow is very bad on Windows, its a good System to play games, but for Working its not stable enough. The Memory Management in Windows is ugly, when you have Nero Started and burn a dvd or anything, than windows is slow like Hell. This are only a few things, but we will talk about pirates in this Thread.

Its only my opinion, if you like Windows more, use it.

I've been privy to some information from Microsoft that isn't readily available to the public, but here's a little bit of useless but interesting information.... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

1. When Windows XP was first released, there were over 64,000 known bugs.
2. Service Pack 1 fixed nearly all of them (hence why it was so big).
3. Service Pack 2 is extremely buggy (especially in relation to Toshiba laptops and the print spooler).
4. The first version of Windows XP to ship the installer crashed if you tried to upgrade Win 95 and had a `dual-boot` Win 95/Linux system.

That's just the very tip of the iceberg. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Oh, and if you haven't done so already I highly suggest NOT installing Win XP SP 2.

However, if you format your computer and install everything fresh, feel free too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Well- I have the same problem too. I got nearly the exact hardware and I'm using Windows 2k (which is said to be better working then XP). Yet all the symptoms occur, which makes it really anoying sometimes. I wish someone would give us a tip what to do...

Yes it is really anoying. The reply from the support from atari was :

You are using Hardware which is not supported from the game.

Cool Message. The best is i send a Hardware list with the Mail and the hardware is wide above the needed Hardware.

That was my last Game from Atari.
