Traditionnal and era music!

Anyone knows of good bands performing traditionnal or ''actualized'' traditional music?

Here are a few I like:

Tri Yann: band from Brittany (Bretagne, in France) been in the buisness since the late 60's. Their early recordings were more straight traditionnal, and later they diversified and experimented with actual instruments without loosing their traditional style. Songs range from centuries old traditional song from all over the world (they even did some old Irish and Scottish songs) to original compositions. In french, Breton, and rarely, in english.

Ad Vielle Que Pourra: From Montreal, Canada, even tho half the band is actually from europe. They do traditional musicc in the purest style without modern influences and instruments. Their material is also completely original! In French and Breton.

Flogging Molly: From L.A., their style is what could be called... er... Traditionnal Irish Punk! Very traditional composing, with violins and all like you expect, the whole `punk-tuated` with electric guitars in a mix that would get your 77 years old grandma to dance as if she were 20 again! In english obviously :|

I know there are millions of those out there... maybe someone could open me good eye on some more?

hehe i remember flogging Molly... you listen to that Diable? and here i thought you just a simple french canadian.. :)

The Chieftains are excellent and have some good `seafaring-type` Irish traditional music.

These guys sound pretty good: http://www.blackirish.com/mp3armsofsea.html

I was looking for a link for Gordon Bok, who I HIGHLY recommend, and found this - http://www.`folk-legacy`.com/store...p?idCategory=39

Looks like some good stuff there, too. Folk Legacy is a very respected and `long-lived` label for a company that puts out music that probably doesn't sell as well as most popular music. (no kidding!)

If you are Canadian, you probably know about Stan Rogers. Well, I knew Stan - and when he'd come to Chicago to perform, I'd be in the front row, most times. He was wonderful (he died in an airplane accident in 1983 and I miss him terribly), and his music is wonderful...

HIGHLY recommend "Live Between the Breaks" for 'Barret's Privateers', 'Rolling Down to Old Maui', and 'The Flowers of Bermuda'.

"Fogerty's Cove" is also a good one for "sea" songs - the studio version of 'Barrett's Privateers' is on this album, along with 'Plenty of Hornpipe' and 'The Wreck of the Athens Queen' which is a wonderfully funny story of salvaging a wreck and becoming one because of 40 cases of Napoleon Brandy.

Ah, gotta go, someone's calling me... This is a good start. I have more... :)

I am one for culture. I am fiercely nationalist, but I see good in everyone. :) and yes, I have Flogging Molly's 'Swagger' album :d:

Here is one more:

Great Big Sea: From Newfie land (Newfoundland) Canada. Their music is inspired by Irish sea songs and the likes, incorporating some pop/rock elements while remaining mostly acoustic. Songs about fishermen are common as well as their economy is mainly based on that industry. Very nice original material, and some very cool `re-arrangements` of old classics like Drunken Sailor, I'se the b'y :)

Great Big Sea does an AWESOME version of "Drunken Sailor"

Flogging Molly have been a favorite of mine since they came out - Same with the Pogues!!!!!

:) :d: :b: OH I forgot the Pogues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(mumble mumble mumble) Catalina needs more rum! (mumble mumble mumble) xD:

I sure do miss Stan... He was just amazing... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

some of the ealry stuff by 'Clannad' is very folky - and the Old Irish/Gaelic they sing in is very haunting.

I also like some songs by the 'Furries' - an irish folk band that did some great traditional type songs in the early days.

The Mad Caddies did an album called "Rock the Plank," in a supposed effort to popularize the idea of Piratecore, something I wholeheartedly support. Swagger is a good album too and the Pogues have Steve Lillywhite, so they're gold. Speak to any `Ren-folk` in the lot and you'll hear of some truly excellent traditional bands. Three that come to my mind are Bedlam, the Naughty Nymphs, and the Minstrels of Mayhem.

The nymphs, unfortunately, do not have a website.
