I reinstalled the game after setting up a faster machine. It's been a while since I last played. IIRC, I used to walk by default, and then I would hold a button (shift?) to run.

Now when I start a new game, my character is always running by default, and the shift button makes him walk. I would like it to be the old way.

Does anyone know how to toggle this option? I reconfigured most of my controls, but I can't remember how to walk by default.

Thanks for the fast reply. I tried 'k' and get an "always run off/on' message, but nothing changes. So, is there something else I need to do. And is there a way to set it so that it saves the setting to 'always run off'?

ALSO - I accidentally hit whatever button changes the game speed. X10 X30 or whatever. What button is that? Or better yet, where might all of these settings be documented? I used to know, but haven't played for a while and I can't remember anything.
 
I stand corrected.

The 'k' button worked ... sort of. It didn't take affect immediately. But I trained at fencing with my boy Malcom and got my ass kicked. After I reloaded the game, I was walking by default like I wanted to.

Not sure if that's normal, but I'm happy.

Sorry, I should have stated. It won't change until you enter a new area/level.

Right, R will give you 1X or 3X game speed, and hitting G will do this:

If speed is set to 1X it will increase to 10X

If speed is set to 3X it will increase to 30X.

And all you need to do to get back to 1X is to hit the "R" key again. You may have to hit it several times to get it to go back to normal speed, but that's what you do... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
 
Dat 'G' key kin be purty dicey at sea whilst ye be sailin'! Many a time Fred Bob be attemptin' a slight course adjustment whilst in 30X mode an' presto! Fred Bob's ship becomes a Whirlin' Dervish! Starts a spinnin' like a top it does, totally out o' control! Many presses o' de 'R' be required fer it to come down out o' dat wild spinnin'! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Yeah I've had some accidents b/c of the speed settings, too. Trying to get close to one of my other ships I hit the game speed button and zoomed into her - I tore off my ship's mast I think. Love the dew, btw.


Since you all have been so helpful, maybe you know the answer to this, too. I like the random rights in towns and housed, but not so often. Is there a way to set the probability of an encounter. I seem to remember reading something about how to control this. Do you have to fool with the configuration files or what?

Maybe you've had a dose of the rum. I tried to decipher that message from every angle. `N-S_E`-W, NE, NW, ... I don't follow. Maybe I need to click my heals or something.

It seems like English. Some sort of code maybe?

1. Open My computer.
2. Open C:Drive
3. Open Program Files
4. Open Bethesda Software
5. Open Pirates of the Carribean
6. Open Programs
7. Find file BuildSettings.h
8. Scroll down till you find the "Vice City" mod section
9. Change around what you want
10. Save, and play the game
