This game blows!

I didn't say I was sore. I was just playin' with ya and how out of control that thread got. I am so surpise how combative everyone is. It was never like this before.

<b>donjn AND EVERYBODY ELSE -</b> Please be kinder to each other. We don't need to fight, and everyone <b><i>is</i></b> entitled to their opinion. Perhaps a little <b>GENTLE</b> conversation is in order when we voice dissent or disagreement, instead of unseemly `name-calling`.

Lapdog, it seems has not seen fit to come back into this topic to post anymore. Perhaps he WAS trolling... So forget about it. It's not worth it, really. If he doesn't want to enjoy the game, that's his business. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I can only agree with Lapdog.
I actually thought that after 15 years, thousands of new ideas must have crossed his mind that would improve the whole game. But I guess he just reprogrammed the original with better graphics and small changes.
PotC have much more fun battles both with ships and close combat, even the missions are more interesting. A combination of those two games would be a master piece IMHO.
But I guess that in the end it was all about making money than making fans happy. I am so dissapointed in you, Sid Meier

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>Thunraz, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

Interesting thought. IMO, PotC is vastly different, and SMP is much more like an old `arcade-type` game. It would be difficult to merge the two.

There have been many SMP fansites all around the web, and even official ones at Atari that have asked this question long before the game was fully developed - and the resounding word from most people was that they LOVED the original and wanted to see it updated. I think that's why the development went the way it did.

I'm curious, what would you have liked to see, specifically? How do you see the game that you'd like SMP to be?

Thank you, Catalina! For that warm welcome.

Free movement in towns and aboard the ship would be awsome, both in fights or just walking around. And I was hoping that one could buy better equipments in stores, such as swords, pistols etc. Not to mention making the caracter and crew RPG so that they get better in swordfights, sailing etc. would be a great boost to this game, I think.

I know that I might have had too high expectations in this game, but I really thought that they would use 15 years of ideas (he sure must have given this game alot of thoughts through the years, as it is his first real hit, as far as I know) better than this.

P.S. Does the Pistols do any good at all or is that just a cool `film-clip` to begin the fights with?

[Edit] Oh, yeah! I almost forgot to mention Multiplayer option. [End Edit]

Heh, the warm welcome is my pleasure. We're naturally a friendly bunch around here, and free with our (virtual) ale and rum! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I really and truly enjoy BOTH PotC and SMP - and it would be wonderful to see a game such as you describe. Have you tried PotC with the mods we offer here on PiratesAhoy?

The pistols DO give you an advantage, if, that is, you have them as special items - otherwise it's just a cool `film-clip`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

And MULTIPLAYER, heh... Yes, a lot of people really want that. An up and coming new MMORPG that looks VERY GOOD is "Pirates of the Burning Seas". And rumor has it that the "proper" Sea Dogs sequel (by Akella) is going to be `multi-player`... So there are a couple of things to look forward to, there!

I think it's a very difficult line for Sid Meier to cross from the moment the game was going to be released.

For example if you look at something like Doom3, for all the engines power and advancements since the orginal Doom the essential game play was Doom through and through. Rooms with monsters in, and sometimes their hidden.

With SMP I see quite a few comments along the lines of "it's not very good", but I think more often than not a fan of the orginal is seeing exactly what they wanted, an updated version of the game they loved <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> If he had started to cross the line of introducing massively different game ideas he would have run the cardinal sin of offending the people the game was essentially made for <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

Although it was only a small game Elite Force 1 was a relative massive success and despite the highly anticapted Elite Force 2, the sequel changed the entire game's basic structure and did the community itself lasting damage <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> (to the extent that more people play EF1 than EF2 today)

If the game's got the basic core, the modders and patchers normally take over from there on in <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

This game is so similiar to the original, that after playing my friends copy, before I was going to buy it, I just downloaded Pirates! Gold. Exact same amount of fun, I don't care what graphics look like. I saved myself 50 bucks.

Ofcourse I have tried the mods, but not the Build12 yet. But it has been downloaded and laying on my computer, screaming to be installed, ever since it was released. I just love them. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/love.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":luv" border="0" alt="love.gif" />
And "Sea Dogs II" have I been waiting for for an eternity it seems, just as I have been waiting on SMP.

So it was like I suspected with the pistols then. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

Well I must admit that I have gotten addicted to SMP just as I was addicted to the original 15 years ago.
So I'm going to start a new career, my third, as a Swashbuckler <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> today. I do enyoy the game so do not think otherwise. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Fun game. I think they hit their goal of making it just as much a `time-stealer` as the original! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

BTW Catalina, wouldn't you and the rest of our fellow lady pirates,
roaming the Caribbean sea, want the chance to choose a female
character instead of a `pre-selected` male one?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Why am I getting hassle for telling a poster that I dont want him around here anymore (which technically why would he continue to post on a board about a game he hates except to troll)?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Read my scenario, and btw he isn't trolling as you put it.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Go on any message board about any new game that comes out and a post like that would get flamed. The rest of his post is good but the first comment had troll written all over it.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Just because they do that on other boards, doesn't mean that it's right.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Then Captain_Python jumps in and is still sore about my "moron" comment EVEN through I told him I was sorry!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So you have a history of this type of behaviour?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Man this is frustrating. Everyone tells me this is a board to voice their opinions. I guess I am not allowed. Whatever.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
An opinion is fine, insulting somebody and implying that you don't want them to visit the board is unacceptable. (What if they patch the game and make it better, he may want to play it again, hence the reason why he should stick around and read/contribute to the forum).

That's why it's called a <i>remake</i>.

Anyway, i'm ashamed to admit, i've never played the old Pirates! game. Instead i've spend many hours in the company of Sea Legends. Great feeling, great game. But that's not the point.

It sucks because it has nicer graphics, let's live in the past, those were the days, Sid Meier has changed, the Pirates! francise is a milking cow blah blah blah. Nobody makes computer games for free, and if u want to see a true milking cow, look at The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and this kind of s**t.

The game is fun, it's relaxing. After a day of work (study, or whatever i am doing) i'm looking for something entertaining, something relaxing, something fun. I agree, the game is not so complex, but if (and when) i want something like that, i'll play Baldur's Gate or Panzer General till my mind blows. Or, if i want something more challenging i'll go outside and punch the local thug right in the face.

I've had a lot of fun with this game and, in spite of it's repetitivity, i'll have more. It's fun to be a pirate. [/i]

After all this is a remake, it's not really Pirates! 2
Maybe Sid is just warming up for a Pirates! 2 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Lol Kiwi,

I like your style <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I would think that Sid just wanted to see if there is still a want for a Sid Meier's Pirates game. Haven't played the original for more than 10 minutes (I'm more of the Sid Meier's Civilization person), but I've been hooked to the second one since I installed it. Too bad it doesn't work on my laptop, or I would have said bye bye to my university life as well as my normal one <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

But yeah. Bottom line is the game isn't really amazing as far as RPG quality goes, but it wasn't really made for that either. It has enough quests and free choice to make it really enjoyable for a long while. It is a bit oversimplified here and there, and there is a lot of room for future improvements, but maybe if Sid sees that the want for Pirates! is still there, he'll put more cool things in the game.

My dear Kiwi!

I did <b>not</b> say that I hated the game or anything like that.
I only said that I was expecting a much better game than it turned out to be.

And if you would have read a little further down you could have read my posting where I said: <!--`QuoteBegin-Thunraz`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Thunraz)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Well I must admit that I have gotten addicted to SMP just as I was addicted to the original 15 years ago.

With humble greetings

To better answer the pistol question, having one pistol starts your opponent one space back. It's just like you had already hit them once. Having the brace of pistols starts them two spaces back. You can notice this easily in the tavern fight. When you have the brace of pistols it only takes one hit to knock your opponent off the balcony. Also in ship duels it only takes one hit to knock them down the stairs.
