The same amount of cities as in original Pirates?

DJ1

Master Mariner
I wonder if the same amount of cities will be used as in original Pirates. The cities seems to have short distance between them. or is it the map?

I reckon that the islands looks pretty small. To sail around Cuba took 10 minutes in the original at least. Will the dimesion of the map be smaller this time?

I hope not. The fun with Pirates was that it took ages to explore the whole world. I actually would like the map to be even bigger.

Well, I think that the amount of cities has to be historically accurate. As for the map size, I would think that it should be as the last game, but it should not go smaller...

The number of cities had a lot to do with what time period you played in. The early time periods had fewer cities and they were mostly Spanish. And some cities were only present during certain time periods, or they changed names.

While I like to have large maps too, at some point they have to balance the fun factor with the realism factor. While it might seem neat to have a huge map or a long journey to get from Port Royale to Campeche, after you do it a few times, the fun goes away and you just want to get there before your crew runs out of food.

Yea, getting to Campeche wasn't too bad, but coming back was a long haul indeed. For those long trips I would usually take a pinnace or a sloop and leave the square riggers anchored somewhere. Also setting the special skill as navigation made sea travel a little faster.

ah, but that's where the strategy/fun begins! do you attack a convoy and steal their food and risk word getting around to that nations's warships? or do you have a letter of marque? do you risk slipping into that dutch town for quick supplies even though they may have heard of the dutch town you looted just last week? do you buy a bigger ship with a bigger hold for more supplies before making the journey? can you afford to or do you need the gold for more guns for when you get where you're going.....(get the picture <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />)

Oh yeah, I get the picture. I have been up and down each one of those decision ladders many a time. And you are right, that is the fun of it. But it never failed that I would be in the middle of the gulf, in a sluggish merchantman, low of food and not a victim in site... the life of a pyrate be a rotten one at times!

Heh, this is where the "reality" of the game checks in! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

This is where modding comes in me thinks, if you could add towns that are not in the game, ( historically accurate of course <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />) then a big map would be fantastic. Thats what im hoping for anyways

Yeah I have alsways thought it would be kool to include Madagascar because pirate activity was huge down there.

Maybe you could sail off towards the `South-East` then it skips to the edge of Madagascar but has taken months in time.... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I actually would like a different, bigger map that is just made up. not caribbean.

It would be fantastic if you could do that.

we maybe can do a mod together here at Pirates Ahoy. with alot of stuff included. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> That would be alot of fun!

Im hoping to do something like that, not much longer to wait and see what we can do

The possibility of the game is endless with moding. Could you imagine going to Europe as a priate and taking London? Or even better yet going to south east Asia and claiming it as a Dutch Colony?

There are so many possibilities, I sure hope we're able to play like that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

One solution is fast forward, for the long voyages.

I think it should be realistic but not too realistic.
The idea that you could make your own village/hide out would be a great way to solve the problem of long travelling.
You could strategically place your own settlements so you can stop for refreshments and morale boosting.

A limit should be set to the amount of settelments, it's a Pirates game, not Civilization. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think the question rests not in the map size (probably bigger than the old one) but with the ship's speed! I am fraid the ships will be going around too fast...
I can only hope they keep the ships speed of the old Pirates!, but I don't understand how they can implement it given the 1 second / 1 day rate of time...

Let's define "long journey"... How long in seconds do you think its long enough?
Personally, for a voyage like the one you describe something around 200 seconds seems nice to me...

That would be cool! And Portugal would at last appear in a Sid Meyer's game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> (I am Portuguese...)
But I don't believe the game to be that moddable...

I'm about to give notice at my job in anticipation of this game. That would be easier than getting fired <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> .
I always wanted a full map in Pirates, or at least be able to choose the area of concentration besides the carribean. I needed to find a place to allow the Spaniards to cool off a little.
I aloso would love to see a `multi-player` version so my buddies and I could pillage and plunder as a team.
I believe politics should play a heavier hand. Henry Morgan was sold out as part of an agreement between England and Spain.
One of the things that bothers me with POTC is the limit of islands to sack. I've beaten the French down to nothing and have letters of Marque with everyone else and don't want to turn on them necessarily, but guess I'll have to.
I like the idea of realistic sailing, but spent too many hours sailing around the yucatan in a frigate with no masts, trying to get back to Port Royale before I ran out of food or got jumped by pirate hunters. At least POTC rapairs my ships when I sack a town, which seems realistic to me, because it took days to torture all of those people, and the shipwrite would have plenty of time to fix my ship while I held his family at `gun-point`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
I miss drawing the cavalry out of Cartegenia to an ambush in the trees. I miss finding the silver train and the treasure fleet together, and I miss playing "Panama" by Van Halen full blast on the stereo while I marched my men across the peninsula to lay the town to waste.
That settles it. I'm quitting my job.
