The original vs. Gold

I wasnt a big fan of it to be honest, it seemed sort of distant compared to the original, also more difficult I had lost my awesome powers of fencing and gunnery <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />:

Pirates! Gold for PC was a pretty bug ridden affair, thought with very nice graphics.

I recently tried it, and the fencing isn't as bad as I remember it to be. It is very realistic, and thus, very difficult.

If you want to try a Gold version which is as good as the original Pirates!, get your hands on the Amiga CD32 or Sega Megadrive versions.

They have a 3rd set of graphics (looks similar to the new game, actually) and a 3rd way of doing combat (a blend between old and new).

I thought Gold was a poor update to the original, as I recall took a couple patches to fix several problems. Even patched, IMO it just didn't play as well, hard to put my finger on it. I only played it because it would run on my PC (after selling the Amiga). Once I got hold of the WinUAE emulator, I was able to play the Amiga version again and never touched Gold after that.

awesome thanks for the info guys, lots of good insight <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Gold sucked by comparison to the original. Yes, for PC it was `bug-ridden`.

I still miss my Amiga version. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I played a rom emulation of the Nintendo pirates yesterday. Boy, without the map you CAN get lost. The water waves aren't like how they were on other ports. You honestly don't know where you are at in the vincinity of something until you get a land bearing.

right on thanks for the input <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />:

Get yourself WinUAE or Winfellow and you could be playing it right now!

I've played gold ONCE and will NEVER do it again. To say that it sucked is an understatement at the very least. They have taken a really good game, added new graphics and totally destroyed the rest of the game. The authors responsible for the modifications should have been given a good taste of the `Cat-O`'-Nine Tails, Keelhauled, forced to walk the plank with broken glass on it and finally hung!

I played the Genesis version and loved it. I prefer Gold on the Genesis to the original. Never played the PC version of Gold though...

Shhhhh!!!! If Jeff the Atari Pirate hears that you'll be walkin' the plank matey! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Well, <i>technically</i> there is nothing wrong with the emulator/Rom if you own the game. I mean, I use a genesis emulator/rom for Gold, but I legitimately own the Genesis game and system also. Just convenient. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Argg!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" /> Well of course I wasn't implying doing anything illegal. I purchased WinUAE from Clonato, who are authorized to sell the Amiga ROM images, an entire virtual Amiga costs about $30. And I also still own the original Amiga Pirates (box, disk, manual) as well as the C64 and IBM versions. It is really nice to be able to enjoy some of these old classic games again.

If you still own an amiga aswell you could have saved your money and downloaded winauae and the kickrom for $0 and still not break any law <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

True, but I sold my Amiga back in 1992, and $30 isn't breaking the bank and well worth it to run some great Amiga games again on my XP box and my laptop while on the road.

Isn't it amazing how an old game that was really great still endures regardless of the technological improvements?

That said, tho, I'm also quite glad that Atari is making a new Pirates! It looked awesome at E3, and I'm really looking forward to its release. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

You need to get yourself a windows emulator for linux first <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
<a href="http://www.winuae.net" target="_blank">WinUAE</a> is the windows version of <a href="http://www.freiburg.linux.de/~uae/" target="_blank">UAE</a> (which is for Unixish systems). However since UAE is poorly updated, you might want to check out<a href="http://www.rcdrummond.net/uae/" target="_blank">`E-UAE`</a>.

Pirates! Gold was one of the first games I purchased for my PC. Back when I had windows 3.1 (or somesuch).

I've since played the console versions and the original Pirates!, but Gold was probably my favorite of the lot.

I actually found it to be quite easy and quite enjoyable. I was hell bent on doing as much as I could before retirement, and even managed to capture most of the special/unique treasures in the game at one point.

It's a shame I have no way of running Gold on newer computers, as I'd play it in a heartbeat if I could.
