That damned Claire Larousse

Cpt Fabris

Landlubber
Anyone finding the whole Claire Larrouse quest troublesome after Build12 and the Post-Build12 stuff installed?

Generally I steer clear of the quests (never liked being forced into linear plot-driven scenarios), but having made the mistake of signing up with Claire I couldn't get rid of her ship...(Surely Larrouse is a French name more than Spanish?)

I gather from other threads dating back at least to Build11 that you are meant to follow Clair(e) to Oxbay, go to the mines (not that I exactly chose...rather, materialised), and then kill some redcoats. Now lacking instructions, I gather I head to Oxbay town...but unless there is a 'scenic route' I missed on the Island, this involves sailing from Greenford. Problem is, with a French flag at Greenford I get shelled by Greenford's fort. Equally with a French flag, upon arrival at Oxbay I get shelled by the fort and several french battleships. Now, ok, I can take the battleships (though I always seem to lose my favourite officers...why, do they think I give them guns? Shoot them you turkey-necked fools!) but I can't moor at all. It seems the whole flag thing fails as the french attack regardless.

So, I can't entirely see how to procede...and unless the payoff is considerable, I am increasingly inclined to think I'd be better off shooting the woman (the hell with the reputation! I'm a pirate afterall!)

It does involve the scenic route!
The silver train in this case, is a land convoy going from the mines, through Greenford, back out through the jungle, and ending at Oxbay.

You however have to stop it in the jungle!
I won't give away any more.
I think there is walkthrough somewhere around here.

Oh, and it is worth it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

BTW: If you give guns to your officers, make sure they have gunpowder and bullets as well! And give them some potions.

If you can't get into any port, land at a beach instead. And you can raise any flag you like; A Portugese flag might give you a good change to get in anywhere you like. However, sometimes you will get recognised.

Thanking you Sir, some sound advice there. For my officers however it seems to be more a reluctance to use guns than put their faith a sharp piece of steel. Then again storming two French battleships was perhaps a little ambitious, short of me taking a more active role in proceedings (I just stood, watched, and occasionally shot Frenchman who came nearby).

Realised my mistake re: Claire Larousse quest...my geography was off. I hadn't found the other gate in Greenford that leads to the town proper. Been a couple of years since I last played POTC seriously, and the links to maps on the FTP server I found with a search have long sinced ceased to work. Forget a compass...I need GPS...an anachronism though it be.

It seems I spoke too soon. I still require assistance/advice in this increasingly irritating quest...

Having captured the gold and killed the redcoats, I gather I am to head to the bay, namely Gray Rock Bay. I also presume this means on foot. Having eventually found it (since terribly helpfully it seems to be called 'Shore' instead) nothing whatsoever happens. Now to confirm this was the bay, I loaded an earlier save and sailed to Gray Rock Bay, and identified a fallen tree on one side of the beach. Check my recent save, and yup there's that tree. So, I am at a loss to know why Claire isn't saying anything. And since my money and cargo are the same as before I started this unfortunate adventure, it seems something is wrong. Any ideas what?

Oh, and there seems to be a bug in Oxbay's new areas. Walking too close to one building (not the dungeon entrance downstairs either) automatically puts you in a catacomb/dungeon area, despite not using the command key. Furthermore, it won't always let you back out the same way (not that there's a door anyway).

I'm guessing that might be a bug in the post Build12.
That quest worked fine in earlier versions.

Oh well, that Claire Larousse business hasn't been cleared up, and it seems I'm stuck with her useless company ever time I go ashore now as well.
One strange possible effect is that with 3 officers accompanying me, one of them (the same one, my gunner) keeps wandering off on her own. Getting to be rather annoying since the Idiot-AI picked a fight in Isla Muelle harbour after wandering off again...lucky thing she killed all 5 attackers or I'd be an officer down having not noticed she'd got into a brawl.
I wonder whether this is due to Claire Larousse, a general bug, or a bug in the 'Crewmember on the Shore' mod I recently updated/installed (the file from the FTP).
