Slaves

Vassal

Hopeless Pirate Modder
Storm Modder
I was wondrin' where is the slaves mod??? is it not included in the builds?? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

Correct.
I did not feel comfortable including it without a thorough implementation of freeing them as well.
However the build is not a personal project now, if it ever was. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Certainly the Caribbean economy in the 17th and 18th century was to a high extent based on slaves and indentured servants. On the one hand, slaves being omitted gives me the feeling that we (or in that case Bethesda, Disney as well) close our eyes to the dark sides of history, pretending slavery didn't exist (while sinking ships is fun).
On the other hand, if slaves were implemented, it would be nessecary to have certain incentives to prevent too much slave trade. These incentives should be historical accurate as well (so no prestige hit because of trading in slaves. Elizabeth I. didn't have any problems with Francis Drake and John Hawkins being involved in the slave trade). Only thing which comes to my mind would be a high death rate of the crew when transporing slaves (IRL 25% were quite usual - once again among the crew - among slaves even higher!) and low moral of the crew (slave ships were extremely unpopular among sailors). Maybe additionally good relationships with highwaymen (modelling maroons), when slaves are not sold but released).
I guess to implement this would be a lot of effort. And since the whole archipelago has not much to do with the real caribbean (at the moment), I can live without in-game slave trade.

You bring up good points--and hit a tender spot as well, in re whitewashing history. {Which leaving out slavery is, you're quite right.}
The problem is that for that very reason, as you say, it's hard to find in-game-terms downsides to slavetrading--slaving certainly wasn't illegal, for all that Akella will make it so in AOP.
If we get more into land battles, as CCC's trying with forts, an additional plus (to not slaving) would be natives and escaped slaves fighting on your side, perhaps. And, heh, perhaps a ready source of (albeit inexperienced) crew, when you take a slaver--as long as you promise to fight slavery (or at least not aid slavers).

There isn't such a thing as "crew experience", is there? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

AFAIK rafe bligh made a mod for this but has bugs....why can't we just add it...its just a game(no offense) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

We could have a "great slave uprising" quest, that would be cool! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Yeah, an uprising against the biggest slaver of them all, Silehard!
Perhaps, a rep hit is in order for being a slaver. We could do a thing like they do in Knights of the Old Republic, like causing a slave uprising would lower your status against the nation, but make you a higher reputation. You do get slaves in PotC, in the Oxbay mines, but most of the worse things were taken out by disney. Perhaps slavers could be introduced, but not yourself slave trading. Slavers could be like the rapers in the jungle, you have to stop them from capturing natives, and if you dont, the natives attack you in jungles, and if you do, they fight with you against highwaymen and other slavers. You could also end up being captued as a slave yourself, and you have to lead an uprising, take the ship and kill the slavers, and when you go back to the city, you fight your way to the governor's house, and threaten him with rebelion unless he frees the slaves, or at least makes them fair workers (paying them etc.)
I personally dont belive that anyone really agreed with slavery in the 17th-18th centuaries, unless it made them money, or they used the slaves.

Well, I suppose it was considered normal back then. Remember, people weren't so sensitive to that sorta thing back then. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

I woulda <b>LOVED</b> to be able to watch a hanging or an execution by guillotine. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

The slave quest sounds cool, but I would take the part out of it when Nathaniel becomes a slave. Or, make him fight a very strong enemy (or enemies), and if they win, you become unconcious, and they take you as a slave. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> That would be fair, I think.

I guess it was taken for granted. People even became indentured servants to pay for their passage or town councils had homeless people rounded up and sent to the colonies as indentured servants. So people then did certainly care even less for Africans. The Age of Enlightement was still to come. (And even then 'enlightement' was only for those who could afford it).

Heh, I was meaning to the more common man, who couldnt afford a slave, and would probably end up as one in the Oxbay mines. As for Nathaniel, I was meaning along the lines of what Rico said.

"You could also end up being captued as a slave yourself, and you have to lead an uprising"
{Plus Rico's "fight, lose, become unconcious, be sold"}
If you lose the fight on leaving Greenford to go to the Oxbay mines, this is exactly what happens IIRC.

No, you don't even have a chance to fight back. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> The screen just changes to black. It's odd, after all you've killed several skilled captains, and you can't kill those two slavers? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

But isn't that the objective, to recover tablets from the mines? And the door is locked at all times... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I've never been taken captive by slavers ever. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Don't you remember? It's at the end of the main quest... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I don't remember it no. But that's because it never happened. I only once were washes ashore Douwesen beach. But I was never ever captured by slavers. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

That was afterwards, I think. You never completed the main quest?! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />
