Skills

Nope whatever you start with is what you have to play through with.

Personally I always go for gunnery <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> The fencing can be dealt with by playing defensively and letting the computer pick your move through your own dodging and at an early age your reflexes and speed are enough to mix and match with most pirates. By the time your getting older all the special items keep you at least functional as a fighter <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Gunnery allows me to normally take a ship without even having to fence so I often go down that route <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

As Duckbeard said, you only get one. However, the Special Items, detailed on pages `113-116` can help in other areas you may lack in.

Also the Crew Specialists detailed on pages `109-111` can be of help.

NOTE: These page numbers are for the USA version. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Since I have to retire in the age of 32 in my first trial and haven`t finished all next time I will try medicine.

Sorry for bringing up an `off-topic` question, but I rather ask it here than to start up a new thread for it.

I'm just wondering how big the manual for the game is ?
I am an uncurable manualoholic, have always been <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />, and to see pagenumbers up to (and probably exceeding)
111 is quite impressive. I never play a game without having read through the manual first (except from demos of course).

I'll get the European release of SM's Pirates on thursday (if there are any differences) and I have a one hour `bus-ride`
back home - so I'm just curious whether the `manual-reading` will last me that long. =)

I went for medicine as well. In the first game I became 40 and still could've started another voyage (but was tired, because I had reached 124 fame anyway and there was not much left to be done except to become Spanish Duke), I wonder how long you can play with medicine and all health special items. 45? 50? That would be very old for a swashbuckler...

The US (english version) is 144 pages long including the Credits/Technical support etc., etc. The actual game info ends on page 136 with an Index of common words within the game and the page they can be found on.

By the way, it is a very nicely done manual and it is spiral bound. I love spiral, keeps the book from coming unglued/unstapled in the creases over the years. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The US version of the manual is much better than the european version. There is more content and it looks better. The european manual is approximately 90 pages long and they used no colors.

Well, that certainly sucks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
Anyone wanna send over a US manual, you know, like a goodwill thing ?? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Sure, I'll track you down a manual if you send me the `T-shirt` and one of those posters I see that were available in Europe <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Seriously, as long as they did not change the content of the manual for the European players, it's a good read. The memoir's of Cap'n Sydney are great!

Captain Sydney?? Well, at the european (german) version this person is called Captain Incognito <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> . Well, but the memories of him are great, your´re right.

By the way, I also use medicine. Did anybody know "how much" the medical items makes your life longer till you must retire?

Can't tell you in years, just that whenever I bought one it upped my health status one level. Seeing as some people seem to have been forced to retire at ~30 I'd guess they give you ~5 years extra each. Perhaps more.

I've been very unlucky, I've been able to buy that medicine once, but only on my first ever game. Since then, I've never seen it. Weird.

Weird indeed. Whenever I have nearly all the special items, the traveller in the tavern will most of the time rather deliver the missing ones than talk about places he visited. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
