971? I'm sorry, but that's way too much. With his guns, you're gonna spend 20k polys just for cannons.
Consider this picture:
<img src="http://republika.pl/kazeite/Victory/guns.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Those are guns modelled by me. The one with the wheels is my detailed version, meant to be shown on the main deck, and yet, it has only 308 polys. Thye other one is meant for gunports below, where it cannot be seen clearly and thus most of the details can be removed - this one has only 44 polys.
And thus, my ship was fully armed with 36 cannons and it took only 2564 polys to do so.
I'd seriously urge you to simplify your cannon model. If you want, I can even share my models with you - they're already completed, textured and tested ingame.

Hi Kazeite,
In know my cannons have more polys,
but there only 4 are visible on deck.
Under deck have each gun 96 polys.
I know my ship have much more poly's as an compareble model by akella.
A akella model have ca. 5600 polys. My ship have, inclusive cannons, ca 15000 polys.
I know here stand performance vs. details... I think the hardware grow further.
In compare to Pirates of the Burning Sea's models. There have a ship on 10 meters 10 k polys <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
