Although I'm all for closing off the current build to further mods so that all bugs can be cleared up, I've got a couple of ideas for the future.

Whilst casting my eye over a couple of portraits in the Pirates RPG, those being the sextant and compass, I thought now wouldn't it be nice to have these instruments in some functional capacity in the Build Mod.

I was thinking that with the compass it would be necessary to purchase this item (or find as treasure) and equip it so as to have the compass ring visible in sea mode/map mode. So is it possible to activate/deactivate just this part (the outside compass ring) of the display, in relation to the equipping of a compass?

The sextant would also be a purchasable (and of course treasure) item, however would only relate to map mode. Without a sextant the map view would be a maximum zoom in and no zoom out or map overview (tab button) would be allowed. This would make it harder for you to determine your position on the map and navigate from island to island without a sextant.

Both these instruments should be reasonably expensive and if not rare, then not common. They should also be subject to loss by theft and maybe even a slight chance of loss in battle or storms.

The alternative is for them to just give skill bonuses in navigation and realocate the bonuses in navigation for existing items to other skills.

So, all you capable modders out there, is this possible?

Excellent idea <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />: Making 'simple' skillenhancig items is rather easy, I bet you could do that yourself: Use the itemmaking tutorial in the WIKI and clone e.g. one of Gret Zen's skillenhancing minerals.

Code for hiding parts of the compass is probably somewhere in battleinterface.c. I am not sure if we can influence the zoomfactor of the map, but I know that we can influence things like sailspeed.

I can lend a hand with that, but not before late January, I'm afraid. I will try to make a debugging campaign in early January <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> As you said, that SHOULD have priority. But it is so very much more fun to create new things than to clean up old ones. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Hey thanks for your support there, matey.

I'll start experimenting and see what I can come up with. If we can get something going I would only want it to be available for the Build if 100% bug free. I'll test it to the max. Of course we should make it togglable as I'm sure not everyone will want the more advanced option.

Ah, I didn't see this thread when I posted the one about the observatory.

Have you had any luck with these items yet?

Not yet, matey.

I've been side tracked experimenting with other mods, however I do intend to get back to these soon. Compass first, I think.
