Ahoy ye scurvy dogs!

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm an original Microprose Pirates! player from before the PC age. I am so pumped about the upcoming release and have been following it's progress for some time.

When I was in college (back in `1988-89`) we actually used to make eye patches and tie rags on our heads and have Pirates! parties. We'd mix up a jug of grog and get 4 or 5 of us and play until we couldn't recuit any more sailors in port... or we passed out, one of the two.

Anyone else have any fond original Pirates! memories?

Welcome to the forum, Cap'n! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

As for memories, nope, never played the old game, but if this one is as addictive or more so than the old one, I'm sure to be hooked on it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Welcome aboard mate!!!

Sometimes I play Pirates! on me nes emulator, it's great!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Cap'n Toast,

Welcome to the sight! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Your avatar is great!

Back in the day, I had a friend who I showed my copy of Pirates! to, I didn't have a computer, but the NES version was pretty close to the computer versions I'd seen, anyway, this friend of mine stayed in my apartment for three days straight playing the game. I couldn't get him to leave! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

I can't make too much fun of him, many was the time I would find myself playing at 5 in the morning, only then realizing that I had spent the whole night playing the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Welcome again to the site! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

All the memories i have of the original pirates are a little hazy seeing as how it's been over 10 years since i have played it. But yes they are fond ones. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Memories??? I still play Pirates! on my C64 from time to time! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I'd love to get my old C64 running again. Heck, it might be worth gettin' one off of eBay just for that purpose. I wonder if my old diskette still works...

I played Pirates! Gold quite a bit too, though it could be buggy at times. Always felt cheated with that release. Felt like they should have done more with it (like they appear to be doing this time!) rather than just pretty it up. Still had the original flavor.

I think one of my favorite game experiences (aside from all the out of game silliness we did in college - ARRRGGG!!!) was trying to sack Panama. It took way too long to get the crew large enough to get a shot at it, and by the time I had enough crew, they were close to mutiny and and getting pretty hungry. We approached Panama and got ran off by the town militia. Then the crew mutinied and I ended up losing the fleet and was left marooned. By the time I got picked up, my health was in decline and my reputation was so bad (from the mutiny and the failed attempt on Panama) that I could barely recruit a new crew. Was not long after that and I was retired as a Merchant on St. Kitts... So close to Panama... I think the Silver Train was in town too...

Capn'n Toast,
Did you ever try to take the town Gran Granada on the Yucatan Penninsula? I think I was more of a `land-active` pirate than a `sea-going` one for all of the walking around I did.

Here's a link to the map that came with my game:

<a href="http://project64.c64.org/maps/Pirates%20map.jpg" target="_blank">http://project64.c64.org/maps/Pirates%20map.jpg</a>

I'd put it into the post, but it looks like it takes a while to load...

I never played Pirates! Gold, unfortunately. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" /> Still, the original game was so addictive that may have been a good thing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Nope, don't think I ever sacked Gran Granada. Funny, I knew exactly where it was when you said it. Seems like the Silver Train or the Treasure Fleet ended up or started there, no?

Trinidad and Gibraltar were always my first stops. They would get promptly sacked into submission and then I would install a puppet governor. Then I would run down the coast, hoping to catch one of the big fat targets.

I'd always wait until I had a small crew before I went off looking for a family member, though. Unless I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Gotta love them treasure maps. I could nail about 90% of them with little effort.

Man, I can't wait!

Those were extremely handy to have if you needed to make repairs while you were taking down the Main! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Sadly, I didn't have the PC version, but I saw a friend of mine's copy which, If I remember right, had a schedule for when the Silver Train or the Treasure Fleet were likely to be in a particular port. That way you could actually track them. In my NES version there was no such schedule and I was too lazy to try and figure out if these two prizes followed a set schedule or not. It seemed that I would always get the message, <i>The Treasure Fleet is in Port!</i> when my ship was nearly sinking and the number of crew I had was very low.

I'm secretly hoping this game follows the originally pretty closely but...

...you know you've been playing the game for too long when you can locate the treasure, or a relative, with one piece of the map! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Yeah, that lake in the middle of Florida was a dead giveaway on the maps <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have not read the developer diary on sound yet, but I hope they use some of the old music from the original, even if it's just the tune. I love that opening song <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Personally, I like the tune played during the land fight better. By the way, with pirates! Gold came a little program that could play the game music. As I just found out, a lot of tunes used go back to old J.S. Bach.
