Sacking Oxbay and Falaise (whilst ignoring plot)

Cpt Fabris

Having effectively decided to ignore the game plot and concentrate on piractical adventures instead I inadvertently captured and sacked Oxbay and Falaise (damn forts shouldn't have fired on me). Of course the places were deserted when I wandered around but I'm not sure what effect it might have on the game's storyline.

I couldn't find a way to change the islands nation...I think I read I needed to find some guy in the forts but didn't encounter anyone except soldiers who were rather swiftly dispatched by my crew. But on returning to Oxbay I've found that whilst the town is still French with French guards, there is minimal naval presence (only one ship) and the fort no longer opens fire on me (ok, I had a portuguese flag, but last time they opened up on my ships).

Does capturing the places early have a detrimental effect upon the progression of the storyline or does the game conveniently forget and go back to the default situation?

Prior to the latest build, I captured Oxbay and sacked the city and it had no effect on the main story line. When back and played the main quest to completion. I would guess the same would be the case with FDF. However, under the latest build I don't know what would happen as this build has a lot of bugs, which are currently being worked out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

After a little playing this evening (GMT) I think you're right it doesn't have any effect. I went back to Oxbay and though there were very few french ships in the vicinity, the fort did fire on my ships upon leaving...so obviously I captured it again. Paltry 1.6m made unfortunately. Clearly I wrecked the economy on my previous 'visit'.
Falaise was similar, though unless for the plot line I have to land at Octopus Bay and walk into town I'm a little stuck. Turning up as Portuguese the fort opened fire...and again I end up capturing the place. Profitable (4m this time...again less than last 'visit') but inconvenient when trying for once to further the main game plot. Does seem daft I can't install a new governor though..and there seems to be an awful lot of English and strangely dutch ships of the coast.

If you are at the part where you are going after the ammunition ship at FDF, you need to land at Octupus Bay first and walk into town. After you obtain the necessary paperwork and take it to the Harbor Master, then you bring your ship to port. That has been a touchy area for a while. It seem if you use any flag, the fort will recognize you and fire at you. There have been several threads posted as to how to get around this.

I switch to the Portuguese flag at Octupus Bay and just before I leave for the dock I save. Generally have to start at this point until the fort does not fire at me. If you go port and pirates are attacking the city, sink the pirates and you will be allowed to dock. That has worked for me several times.

You can only give the town to another nation by attacking the fort from the land side. This can only be done with Oxbay and Greenford, but not Falaise de Fleurs. CCC added this feature to his enlarged Oxbay mod. To find the entry to the forts, search around the new locations on Oxbay.
