Having effectively decided to ignore the game plot and concentrate on piractical adventures instead I inadvertently captured and sacked Oxbay and Falaise (damn forts shouldn't have fired on me). Of course the places were deserted when I wandered around but I'm not sure what effect it might have on the game's storyline.
I couldn't find a way to change the islands nation...I think I read I needed to find some guy in the forts but didn't encounter anyone except soldiers who were rather swiftly dispatched by my crew. But on returning to Oxbay I've found that whilst the town is still French with French guards, there is minimal naval presence (only one ship) and the fort no longer opens fire on me (ok, I had a portuguese flag, but last time they opened up on my ships).
Does capturing the places early have a detrimental effect upon the progression of the storyline or does the game conveniently forget and go back to the default situation?
