Risen 2: Dark Waters

Thanks OP! Front page news, even if I am a bit late! :wp

Found something on their own forums that just completely killed my interest for this game. A user asked about ship combat and control, and got back this response from a moderator:

It will indeed be only cinematics. So there no naval battle. This may be disappointing for some players, given the pirat context, but on the other hand, it is a RPG. Not easy for a RPG specialist team to implement some naval battle action.

So, my question is, why the heck do they even have a seafaring theme for the game then? xD: Is this a landfaring RPG or something? :cheeky

Ahoy stallion, good to see you mate!

This is exactly why I have stopped posting anything about the game on the front page, that and the magic/fantasy crap. Most of our modders are not programmers either, yet we have succeeded in almost completely changing the feel of the sailing model from what was originally implemented in POTC. These lubbers will never understand what a pirates ship truly means.

My sights are firmly set on Port Royal 3, I am chomping at the bit to get my hands on that one!!

I'd be on here more often if not for all the physio I'm doing. xD: Nice to be getting better, but now my computer time is being fast eroded.

Yeah, I don't get the whole magic pirates stuff going on anymore. PotC as a movie series is mostly done in my books. Kinda wish they'd remake some of the classic pirate films, if only it would end the deluge of wacky PC titles.

Glad to hear your doing good mate, that was one freaky incident for sure!

Yeah, I agree completely, there are so many real pirate stories that have yet to be told as well, but Hollywood hasn't been in the reality business for a long, long time. I would really love to see someone do something on the Whyda and Sam Bellamy, but that one definitely doesn't have your traditional Hollywood happy ending! I am hopeful for Pirate Latitudes though, it was a good book and I have confidence Spielberg will get it right. It's not due til 2014 however. :facepalm

A friend of mine got me a Kindle for Christmas, and I have been reading some of the old classics again, it's been a long time since I have really gotten in to reading. Just in the past few months though I have read Treasure Island, The Sea Hawk, Robinson Crusoe, Great Pirate Stories and of course The Pirate Devlin for the front page review. All during breaks and lunch at work, almost makes the place tolerable! :mm

I have pretty much given up on Raven's Cry and Risen 2, but Port Royale 3 looks like a real winner!

Helps when your physio is a smoking-hot blonde about the same age as me. :cheeky

They're doing a Pirate Latitudes movie? Nice! I can't figure out why there's always copies of it on the bargain book tables at the bookstore - I thought it was one of the best pirate books I'd read in ages.

I've been thinking about grabbing an e-reader once I finally get fully up and about again. There's tons of public domain e-books on the Internet Archive, so the reader would pay for itself pretty quick, I'd think. The biggest users of those here are seniors - I can see why after holding one, since they weigh so little. Am thinking I might grab a couple for my grandparents first. They're in their eighties and are far more tech-savvy than me. xD:

Hmmm, perhaps I need to take a closer look at socialized medicine! :wp

I do highly recommend the Kindle with E-Ink, the Kindle Fire sucks for reading, the black and white E-Ink is even better than reading an actual book in my opinion.

They just released a few more screens for Risen 2, this one in particular caught my attention.... I seriously hope that that is not the best pirate ship their artists could come up with and there is a reason that it looks like that!

Can't help but wonder how they got that ship so nice and close in to the shore. Didn't realize they had tugboats back then. xD:

I think the ship might be there just to look pretty.

I don't think ther is going to be any sailing between the islands ( probably just a cut scene when you go from one island to the next ) as they say that there will be no ship combat ---

Although Dark Waters is a pirate-themed game, don’t expect any ship combat—this is an action-adventure RPG through and through.

PS - I do like the monkey :mi :mi

Hi

Played some sort of demo for the game :robber: .......hope they sort out the foliage graphics glitch where trees seem to get smaller as you get nearer and sort out the FRPS lag.

Other than that it's just the same as the original with a pirate theme, clothes & guns and cut scene sailing with a follow on plot.

Talisman,.........you have to kill the claw monkeys to get the little ones

PS (As with the first Risen.......can't permanently borrow any location scenes or char models as it's not a dx engine.....very disapointing but that's how it goes).

Cheers
damski.

Those kinds of demos are always fun. :cheeky

From all the previews I've been reading, the game doesn't sound too bad. It's just...not what I was expecting.

I had a quick look, made a news post also.

But it does look like there is no actual ship v ship fighting.

22. NO BIG SEA BATTLE (it is a RPG game, not a battle simulation one) ( source)

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I pretty much gave up on this game, no boarding and the voodoo crap pretty much sealed it.

Anyone still considering grabbing this might want to take a look at Steam's subforum for it. Sounds like there's tons of stuff wrong with it, and the developers pulled the trick of gutting most of the content and selling it back as "new" DLC.

On the other hand, this is Deep Silver and their cronies, so after the messes that were the last Call of Juarez and the still bug-ridden dung heap that is Dead Island, I'm not overly surprised. Always sucks to see a promising company go the way of the big guys.
