Realistic Guns?

Ahhh!
Instapost!

New sounds? OOOOoooohhh... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

As if the big guns weren't scary enough... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Wait a minute, 14 guns?

Oh, I don't think 32pdr carronades are buyable, they're only there in case multiple gun types can be mounted sometime in the future. Or something like that, they seem completely useless to me, because only frigates and up can mount them.

KNB well I added those lines. I count to 8 long guns and 6 carronades as soundtypes, 11 of them buyable, hope this will work.

Well, I added the 32pdr carronades last, and then forgot I added them. I only thought I had 13 guns, so I was a bit surprised when you said 14....Actually, I think one of the forts might use the 32pdr carronades at close range; I think they are used once.

As to the "missing" line, I'm now completely sure that it's supposed to be missing. The 68pdrs count as 32pdrs internally; the largest guns that count are the 42pdr long guns a couple of the forts use, and they're the last entry I put in NK's caliber array.

Different sounds for each gun would be amazing. If we can get those added in, we should try to get different smoke effects for each gun; it's a bit odd when you fire your lugger's guns and the smoke cloud is 6x bigger than your ship. My huge smoke effects look great with forts and frigates, but the little guns are kind of silly.

OK, so then there will be this 2 wrong lines in my version of your cannons_init and maybe the sound instruction for the 68pdr carronades as well.

Now, a question.
As you probably saw in the Ship Gun Mod thread, I finally figured out how to knock out guns.
The question is, is it enough to knock them out in order, or should each gun be tracked?
I.e. is it enough to say "fire only 20 guns", rather than the more complex "fire all guns but these". The latter is more expensive `processor-wise`, too.

Keep It Simple, Simon! "K.I.S.S." <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

This is great, the game is going to take on a whole new aspect with all these adjustments and features! REALLY looking forward to playing it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Maybe we can have a "flying cannon" in the debris that gets thrown up into the air when you are hit or hit someone else! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

I wondered, maybe it would be a good idea to connect the destruction of a cannon with a critical hit, after all, if you do one of those, there is an explosion. As well, that Critical Hit perk would make even more much sense, as it would help with knocking out cannons. However, that perk peventing critical hits to the player´s ship would have to be modified so they happen more rarely, but are still possible.

VERY good idea, Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I put here some historical data about cannons from 1639. I tried to improved appearance of this original table so as it was `better-arranged` but I wasn´t able to do it here. Despite of this it has its real value. The each last reading on the line is maximum range in paces. When 1 pace is about 0,75 meter, so, in this case we can see here the 19 pounder culverins shot at the distance about 1575 meters, which is really impressive.

Thanks for your corrections. Because you apreciate these datas I am putting here the link on the this website. There are some more datas. Maybe some of them could be helpful for further modding somehow.

Hmmm....

Thanks Rad, that 1639 table looks useful. My guns are based on ~1750 pieces, because that's all I could find easily and I didn't have enough free time to look through the university library. The carronades are ~1800 pieces, quite obviously. I kind of like the tactical considerations carronades bring, even though the AI doesn't use them very well.

I might whip out a slightly less incongruous set of guns based on this 1639 data... later. It really shouldn't take long, but it will be about two weeks to a month before I have any free time to speak of.

To tell the truth, though, the 1639 gun data looks very very similar to the ~1750 gun data. The biggest difference is that the 1639 guns have slightly less range than the 1750 guns, assuming the "max range" means at an elevation of ~5deg and using a conversion of 1 pace = 30 inches.

@Sofus,
The only thing released is on the Pirates Ahoy! ftp, I think there's a sticky thread that tells you how to access it, if you don't know already. Be warned though, my mod is probably incompatable with most stuff released after Febuary. It shouldn't be *too* hard to make it compatible, but I don't have time to mess with it and I'd rather wait for an official Build update.

Rad: thanks for the link! (and sorry about the delay in replying to your others; got tired way early last night).

KNB: An additional apology. My coding was taken up with the itemtrading stuff, but I'll try to merge this in as soon as possible.

Got it merged in with a toggle, fingers crossed it works.
Will get to the destructable cannons / changed type thingie as soon as possible.

This is one of the most exciting and promising mods on the works, congratulations to everybody involved in it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> . I really hope it can be finished soon! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Reading through "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly provides some good insight into the armament of several large pirate ships.
Here are some examples-

Bartholomew Roberts (Royal Fortune)- 12 eight pounders, 4 twelve pounders, 12 six pounders, 6 eight pounders, 8 four pounders, 2 and 3 pounders in the main and foremast, and 2 swivels on the mizzen. (Cordingly, 167)

Sam Bellamy's Whydah- 27 of the recovered 28 guns include 5 six pounders, 15 four pounders, and 7 three pounders. Ten swivels are mentioned in period accounts.

William Kidd (Adventure Galley)- 34 guns, also had sweeps.

William Teach (Queen Anne's Revenge)- 40 guns. Blackbeard was able to fight off the HMS Scarborough (5th rate) with 32 guns- "...engaged him for some hours, but she finding the pirate well manned, and having tried her strength, gave over the engagement, and returned to Barbados, the place of her station." (Cordingly, 166).

Personally, I use the Pinnace2 with her 24 sixteen pounders. Has good speed and resembles the large ships depicted in Captain Charles Johnson's "History of the Pyrates".

I like the idea of flying cannon and exploding debris, what about crewmembers?

Yours, &.

Mike
