Sneaking

Here is my list.

1. Sailing - 9.5
Very beautiful. I prefer the chasecam. So much happening and it is really intresting and fun. The weather effects are stunning and it is so nice to see all other ships sail around.

2. Fencing - 8.8
So much action. I really love it. I didnt like the fencing in the original but this is just so cool!!!!

3. Dancing - 8.7
A great add. It is really challanging and fun. It is little difficutl (play at swachbuckler) but that is just making it even more fun. The romance in SMP is great!

4. Shipbattles - 8.5
Great fun as well although not as actionpacked as the fencing.

5. Sneaking - 7.5
Rather fun but it is to slow and it would be much more fun if it went in at least the double speed.

6. Landbattles - 5
Booring. I dont think it is really strategic either cause those with most soldiers will win. to slow. please give us a ship vs town battle minigame!!!

1. Sailing - 6.0
Gets you from one point to the other, nice to see all the activity going on with ships going here and there, and colony growth as well. I wouldn't say the graphics are dazzling, but they do the job.

2. Fencing - 6.0
Patterns get repetitive after a while, and the linear method of fencing is a bit too predictable. It would be good to have a `free-movement` duelling setup, but I'm dreaming.

3. Dancing - 0.0
Don't get me started on this. It's tedious and annoying, and chugs where the other seqeuences don't. I don't think it should be an integral part of the game (and it's not), but there are many better ways to romance a girl than spin around and stab their fiancees.

4. Shipbattles - 10.0
The highlight of the game, the ship to ship sequences are `in-depth`, requiring tactics and quick responses. Good mix of realism and good old arcade fun. I blow up ships just for fun.

5. Sneaking - ?
Never snuck.

6. Landbattles - 5.0
Too simplified, but better than having the computer simulate pirate loss automatically. If only the units moved faster.

I won't digits. Too little difference between 9,3 and 9,4 anyway.

Sailing - 9/10
I love the mood, the controls feels great. If they weren't fun to do, then the game wouldn't be fun to play, as it's close tom `60-70`% of the game.

Swordfighting (I prefer that name, more piratey) - 8/10.
Excellent fun. Miss the possibility to move back and forth on your won free will, and in the original you had the choice between high/low/mid slash or high/low/mid thrust. Why not here? Using the shift or ctrl just like in the landbattles wouldn't be too much hassle. As lon as the blocking stays in the same. Would be 9 if it wasn't for these missing moves.

Dancing - 7/10
Yeah, probably not the greatest addition in the game, but I actually quite like it. There's really absolutely no difficulty to it, if you think it's too hard, you're doing it wrong. Must be. You have lots of time to press the right keys, and if you press the wrong key you have more than enough time to fix it. Not really challenging at all, not even on Swashbuckler. Perhaps you concentrate on the wrong things? Learn to dance properly, and it's not as bad as you all make out.

Shipbattles - 9.1/10
Yeah, my only grade with a digit. Just to note that I like the shipbattles just a wee bit more than the swordfighting (hey, fencing is two guys sticking long nails in eachother, with protection wear!). Deeper than the original, which is a good thing. I loved them in the original, and I love them even more in the new one.

Sneaking - 5/10
Yeah, it works, but it's not very thrilling, and the fact that you actually have to sneak to each individual house, be in the merchant, shipwright or governor (one would think HE would at least alert the guards upon your arrival). If you only had to sneak INTO town, then just visit every location you wanted to like in the original, instead of sneaking AROUND in town. Sid Meier usually puts fun before realism, this time he forgot to do that.

Landbattles - 8/10
I love them. I don't want it to be TOO complex, but it could do with some more complexity. The fact that it's hard to see what kind of unit the enemy have sometimes, and it's never possible to see how many people are left in the unit. Only your own units. It should also end with a swordfight against the captain of the guards, like in the original. Perhaps scaling the fort could be a `mini-game` too someway.

And to those who thinks the one with the most units win the landbattles simply don't play strategically enough. There's plenty of room for strategic playing in the landbattles, after all we're talking Sid Meier here - master of strategy.

Just thought I'd add `replay-value` too: 10/10. That's what this game is all about. You may grow tired after `4-5` days of constant playing (like me), but you'll always be back for some more once you had a break from it.

Sneaking is kind of worthless, I never do it. I would rathar sack the port or go to a different port.

Dancing is really dumb.

Land Battles are great I love them.

Sailing: 7/10
A little unrealistic with too many traffics, flags visible even at long distance, No way to tell wind direction. Nice graphics though

Fencing: 9.5/10
Lots of fun and combo moves. AI needs to be better at lower difficulty levels

Dancing:9/10
Those who are 13 or younger tend to hate it, but those of us who are `grown-ups` know the importance of females to lonely hearts of sailors. IMHO it's the best addition to the game because no other pirate game has this feature. Historically pirates spent money on two things: rum and women. Dancing takes a bit of practice but is really well done. Love to held the lady's waist and kiss her when I perfect a dance.

Sneaking: 8/10
Need more than just governor's mansion and tavern to visit. Great addition if you want to play the game honestly with no saving/reloading.

Landbattles: 6/10
Wish they have kept land vs fort battles. Land battles are way too slow. What's the use of fort if it doesn't deter pirates? Now it's just number of men that matters.

Ship battles:8/10
Great graphics with men and cargo/plank thrown overboard. But need a zoom in feature and more camera angles to view actions. Need a more sophisticate system for boarding, not just contacting any part of ship.

I've played the first three difficulty levels.

Dancing 8
It's actually quite fun and a nice break from the action. Just watch her hands and you should have no problems. I've even memorized some of the patterns and can now concentrate on hitting the beat. If you get a perfect dance sometimes you get a special ending.

Fencing 8
Great, although it can be a little easy. Just take fencing as your skill and always pick the rapier. Your reaction speed is so fast you will never have to even defend if you don't want to. If he goes to quick stab, quick stab back, you will parry each other. If he high or low swings, quick stab while he is drawing back, you will get a hit. You can win all your battles with just the one button if you want. It gets even easier once you get the balanced swords and the silk shirt. This can get boring, so I usually play more normal, but it's great info to have in a pinch. This tactic doesn't work as well once you get old and slow though.

Landbattles 9
Love these and do them often. Although fairly simplified it fits the level of the game. It's not true that the one with the most troops wins. I often defeat two to one odds. Just use the terrain and your troops effectively. Use tactics and don't just rush troops toward the enemy. Set up all your buccanneers in woods near each other so they can concentrate fire on single targets. Place pirates and officers nearby to flank enemies once they start getting picked apart by your guns and to protect the buccaneers. Set up ambushes behind impassable terrain so they are forced to come one at a time. You will need to station a unit or two to guard the flank as some may try to go around. Don't rush them, wait for them to come to you. By the way, sometimes you do end up fencing against the Captain of the Gaurd after you win the tactical battle. I haven't figured out if it is a random occurance or if there is a specific trigger.

Sailing 9 Great. Nothing really to complain about, but I rarely give out 10s.

Shipbattles 9
Also great. Royal sloops are awesome ships. Fast nimble ship with decent firepower. My ship of choice when I don't have a large frigate. The large frigate is still fairly fast, altough not as nimble as the royal sloop at dodging enemy salvos. I usually prefer fast nimble ships, but the large frigate is useful when I need a of troops and you just got to love a 20 gun broad side. Which brings me to the complaints I have about the ship combat. The ammo is too simplified. Even though half my guns only fire, all my guns need to reload. So if I'm fighting two ships. I come along ship #1 on my right and fire. I then pass by ship #2 on my left side and I can't fire because for some reason when my right guns fired my left ones became empty. I would like to see a seperate counter for the right and left side batteries. Also I can load round shot, then change my mind and switch to chain or grape and there is no effect on the status of the guns. They are instantly reloaded with the new rounds. I would like them to have to reload if i switch ammo types.

Sneaking 7 This is ok. It was fun the first few times but has become tedious. It needs a little something extra to make it more interesting.

There are a few things wrong with this post. First, to sum up all the people who think dancing is a waste of time as "13 year olds" is just ignorant. I am 20 and I feel that, while dancing itself might have its use in a pirate game, the fact that it boils down to a tedious game of DDR is not. Pirate's rarely ever danced with governor's daughter's. If we were to go by your post "pirates spent money on 2 things: rum and woman" there would be a whore house instead of dancing with the governors daughter. I am in no way suggesting that we add a whore house to the game, and I am not implying that romance is out of place in a pirate game. I just feel that the `mini-game` is a tedious and repetitive way to sum up courting.

You do know these woman are not real right? Cause I hope you were not implying that people who don't like the dancing are somehow `pre-teen` boys who don't like girls or something.

1. Sailing - 9
Nice but it's too slow for me

2. Fencing - 9
Great One.

3. Dancing - 8.5
Nice but too long

4. Shipbattles - 8
Too slow. And little boring. I always getting close to them so i can board their ships.

5. Sneaking - 6
Very very boring.

6. Landbattles - 8.5
Great One!!! But i wish the fights would be bigger.

Land battles are one of my favorite parts of the game - if you turn your resolution down, the men move faster. I'd rate it an 9

1. Sailing - 6
Rather nice but it takes too long to go from west to east

2. Fencing - 8
Not bad not bad

3. Dancing - 3
Nice at first but now horribly repetitve

4. Shipbattles - 9.5
Best part of the game for me

5. Sneaking - 2
Horrible... boring.....

6. Landbattles - 7
Nothing much to say really

galaninjapan, I see your point, but dancing is hardly as repetitive as the plundering of same few types of merchant ships (most with 8 guns, `40-50` men) over and over again, or with same port/tavern interfaces. This game, to sum up, is as repetitive as the original. My point is female companionship is what sailors miss the most after spending months at sea. Any pirate movie/story is a boring one without some female involvement.

I agree, I just hate to see this element boil down to a tedius game of simon says. As for sailing abd fighting being repetative, I agree they are. But, they are a little more fun and exciting thant dancing.

maybe some other `mini-games` to woo the daughters would help like practice fencing, pistol shooting or horesriding.

Hey, I haven't played yet, and I saw some screen shots. I saw the land battle part. I saw it was turn based thing, and it looked like a checker board type thing. Is that about right on describing the land battles, or is there more important details?

It has some elements of chess in it but there are more important details too.
You have different types of units (melee and ranged) and you can use the terrain somwhat to your advantage. You can move all your units in each turn and they have two moves each. Except when you move into or between trees.

Land battles are a bit like a traditional wargaming game - turn based, and strategy oriented. You choose what to do and how to position your men for the best effect, and the computer essentially "rolls the dice" for you and you get the result. Then the computer gets to "hit" at you. There IS strategy involved, placement and such, and if you get your muskets up front or behind or off to one side to support your other troops.

Yeah, I really like the land battles. It's a perfect mix of strategy without being hard or too complicated. I'm quite impressed with it and I'm pretty snobbish about wargames. It's no Combat Mission or Gettysburg, but it is more than chess.

1. Sailing - 9
Considering I can barely move at the moment this has been a most pleasant time passer, although there is the odd, "I wish this wind would stop following me," In general something will sail past that catches the eye and the interest.

2. Swordfighting - 9
I've found the swordfighting good fun and something that got accurately harder as the levels increased to the point that the latter contests involve having to make the opponent miss and then counter instead of being always on the offensive. That said even at some of the earlier levels there is fun to be had playing with your opponent and attempting to make most of your hits come from stylish backflips.

3. Dancing - 7
I don't think any game in the world could have claimed and done successfully what SMP has done with this aspect of the game. That said once I was pressing the buttons before she's even moved they lost their interest pretty quickly if you have nothing to gain from it (unique items/missons) Casanova game was played reasonably enjoyably (hearts in every port) but it wasn't as enjoyable as others.

4. Shipbattles - 9.5
Almost unexplainable how something so simple is so fun, for more of a challenge get an era loaded with pirate hunters who try to catch you when your low on crew, some of my most enjoyable moments have arrisen desperately attempting to keep a pirate hunter at bay whilst whittling down their crew before the inevitable collision

5. Sneaking - 4
Unless I've missed something here there seems a massive lack of variation and long term interest here unlike anything else in the game. But then it is probably the least used aspect so it's not a massive problem.

6. Landbattles - 9
I've found these great fun, to an extent they are the sea battles transferred to land. Simple in their controls but essentially bottling down to location, firepower and strategy. As has been said, stick to the trees, don't get flanked and remember your not an invading army, be sneaky <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

In regards to other mini games being in there, some of them mentioned almost sound as though they should be, but I for one can only thank SM for not making this game so far beyond any chance of me stoppping playing it, afterall I think a week without food would kill me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />
