In 14A6, I can't board other ships starting the game unless i am in collision distance. Can this be fixed? or is it simply my lack of boarding skills?

Yep; you need to get really close to another ship and sail a course very close to the other ship's course if you don't have a high boarding skill.

that's not how it used to be. even a novice boarder could board a ship from 5 meters.

he's right, actually. it was a lot easier in the stock game to engage in boarding. i prefer the current setup.

well i hate the new boarding system for the fact that it was easier before. My entire game strategy was built around boarding ships and merchants without firing cannons. Now, i can expect my ship to be battered and bloodied every time. Ah well, just something to get used to and work for more skills to do. It does make it a heckuva lot harder to upgrade, though.
BTW, thanks to morgan the terror for agreeing with me and enuring that i am not, in fact, insane. i was getting afraid there from the first replies.

" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> it just takes fiddly practice. after a while you'll be taking over class 3's with a gunboat and zero skills just like me.
