Problems with `Anti-Aliasing`

Monza

Landlubber
Whenever I turn on any level of `Anti-Aliasing` the movies (introduction etc) flicker very badly. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I had this exact problem and thought it was AA as well, but for me it ended up being that aniso filtering was on as well. It now works (and looks) great with just `anti-aliasing` on.

I use a Radeon 9800 Pro with the 4.12 Betas by the way. Hope this helps.

Looks like an issue with ATI cards, regardless of catalyst version, and AA. Turn off the AA for the time being, there is official word this will be fixed in the next game update.

My bad, should have mentioned I have a 9800XT running official Catylyst drivers, 4.9.

For me, having no AF but any level of AA results in the flickering.

My rule is that I refuse to play any game without FSAA being enabled (I can live without AF but not FSAA).

Is it just the Intro' movie, or are there movies distributed throughout the game? If so, then I'll wait until they patch it before I buy.

As far as I recall, it's just the intro movies (two of them), but I could be wrong. Anybody else recall? There aren't that many movies in the game ...

I assume you can just press the escape key or something to `by-pass` the intro movies? If so then that's another sale heading Sids way <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

However if there are more movies within the game that are affected, then as I said before, I'll wait until they fix it before buying.

Thanks all in this thread for bringing this to my attention.

It makes you wonder why this wasn't corrected before release considering the amount of beta testing. Surely ATi owners must have reported this problem during beta testing?

Thanks Cat.

`Sen-Dog`, is there a web link that gives official notification that this will be fixed?

mine works with aniso as well, and not FSAA. Gonna try not to play it too much until they release the patch or new radeon drivers, crashes every game before I get a chance to save on my 9600xt omega drivers (the official drivers stutter on 1024X768)

This might be explaining why my Girlfriends one just started crashing for most of today, luckily I was well fortified enough to keep her back from mine <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

`Sen-Dog`,

I ask again... How do you know this?

Maybe he works for Sid Meier and won't tell us! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Well let's wait till the next update and we'll see what happens.

Btw, those people talking about turning Anistrophic Filtering on from the video card applet.

You have AF Quality and Performance. You do know what they are I take it? If not, then they are basically what we used to call Bilinear filtering (performance) and Trilinear filtering (quality).
So if you have selected Trilinear filtering from within the Pirates! video options, then your video applet control panel should be set to Application Preference, i.e. Let Pirates! determine the AF level, otherwise your video card will overide the `in-game` setting, thus making the `in-game` setting redundant.

I just thought I'd mention it, just in case.

Nope.

The AA bug only causes the FMV sequences (full motion video) to flicker. Those are the two Bink movies (*.bik) for the intro. The sequences after duels etc. you are referring to are not FMVs but real time animations, i.e. done directly with the games graphic engine. AA is no problem there.

Hengist, you can just turn off AA for the two intro movies, tab to desktop as soon as you've arrived in the caribbean, turn AA back on and then play the game without any problems.

Nem,

You can't do that as the program determines the vid card setting as it launches into the 3d world. The only way to remedy it, is to quit, turn on FSAA and then launch and load a previously saved game.

Incidenty, I don't get flickering video's, I just get a blank screen with the audio playing in the background.

The top and bottom of it all, is that this issue shouldn't occur and we need Sid or Co. to tell us that it's going to be fixed via a patch.
Perhaps Sid doesn't value the graphic quality of FSAA and was happy playing in a jaggie, shimmering world, thus he/they didn't consider it an issue? Hello? We're now in 2004, graphics have moved on since the days of SVGA <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Curious that I can do it regardless. Ati 9800 Pro. I don't usually recommend untested solutions. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Perhaps it depends on the drivers? I use the latest Omega ones.

Well that's strange Nem as I've yet to see a DirectX call to the APi in any game that will carry out what you've said is happening, it just doesn't work like that. I'm not doubting what is happening on your machine, in your eyes. I'm just basing my reply on what I know regarding DirectX programming techniques and implementation methodolgies. I could be wrong, I could be right. All I know is that your sugggestion doesn't work on my machine. However I do realise you're trying to help and I sincerely appreciate that.
