Solved Problem with quest "Strange things going on in the Caribbean" - Trapped in Bridgetown

I'm at the part of the quest where you have to meet a Spanish ship near Barbados and protect it from cultist ships. After the battle the player is teleported to Bridgetown. The problem is Bridgetown is a British port. Britain and Spain are at war, and I was flying a Spanish flag for the battle because the ship I was supposed to escort was Spanish and I didn't want it to aggro me. But now I'm in a British port with a ship flying a Spanish flag. As soon as I board my ship to leave the fort cannons destroy it in 2 volleys. I can't escape. I tried changing my flag to a British one while on the deck before I depart, but that doesn't help. I guess the fort sees me changing my flag while docked?

How do I get out of this? I'd rather not load an earlier save before the battle because I only just barely survived (and lost all of my officers during a boarding).

I think the fort remembers you in your ship. So 1) change your flag in port 2) if you can bear to lose your ship sell it and buy a different one. If not buy another then beach your original to get it later. Once the fort has seen you sail with a different ship (and friendly flag) this resets the fort and you can return and pick up your old ship if it has sentimental value. No guarantees though.
