POTC Bug Tracker needs a Manager for Build 14

IncredibleHat

Greetings pirate speaking people,

The POTC Build Mod Bug Tracker website (<a href="http://swankyplace.com/potcbugs/main_page.php" target="_blank">potc bugs</a>) is wondering if any of the current developers and mod pack compilers would like to have their account access level raised to that of "Manager"?

This would allow the manager of the build mod project on the website, to add new versions, post news, and manage the project accordingly to allow full use of the bug tracker abilities. The site is indispensable to tracking and handling bugs. It was a leading factor for the Build13 push to completion.

If interested, just reply to this topic. In order to get Manager privileges, others will have to agree with you becoming a manager. If anyone objects to any specific person, then I will not grant them manager rights.

Thank you.

Exactly what I thought ! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

INCREDIBLEHAT! Nice seeing you in these waters again! How are you doing? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I hope that you, at one point, have some opportunity to have a look at the work we've been doing on the Build 14 Alpha versions. We added a whole bunch of new things that I'm sure would like as well. Naturally there's the bugs as well, but at the moment we are very low on manpower, so everything's going dead slow. It would be a very good idea to start using the Bug Tracker again. It indeed is a very good tool, as long as it is being used.

I myself am slowly getting back into the hang of things and am doing some minor compiling and modding work, but I am usually pretty busy as are all the modders. It would be a great idea to have a Bug Tracker Manager to take care of all the Bug Tracking so that the modders can focus on the modding work instead.

wow....you should have been back half a year ago, according to what had been said.

well, who's going to be the manager then?

Ah, well. My time is really tight these days. I'd like to help, but lots of crap going on cutting into free time. I have been found wanting... realized its September already, and well, can't account for what happened in May, June or July (was there even an August this year?!). So busy, its just all a blur.

I brought the question up about the manager, because I had to rebuild the whole server recently (meltdown), and saw the bug tracker was still being used, but some things were out of date on it (versions and news). Since I have been out of the loop for so long, I really do not know who is still around, or doing what with the project. Hoping maybe some people would take on the organizational role.

I can quite understand you being busy. So I would like to thank you for dropping in again anyway. Just know that if you ever do have some time, you will always be welcome here. At the moment we have only two active coders: Pirate_KK and Maximus, so most bugfixes and new features come from them. Then there's several people working on adding locations, ships, characters and items. I myself am only doing minor things, trying to improve what I can, but unfortunately my lack of real programming knowledge is preventing me from being a proper coder.

If anyone would want to take on the role of Bug Tracker Manager, that would be most appreciated. Basically it would just mean making sure all reported bugs are posted on the Bug Tracker and are updated accordingly. I think there's no real programming knowledge required, so just about anyone with some spare time could do it. It would be a big help to our modding efforts and would mean a great relief for the few coders we do have so that they might concentrate on the modding and not on keeping the Bug Tracker updated.

"real programming knowledge" ... "a proper coder"? I was never any of those either <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

A manager wouldn't need to know the code. Just someone who is paying attention to what is going on with the project, and can pester people for updates about what they are working on. Just a small working knowledge of the bug tracker is required (and its not difficult, point n click stuff).

The two key reasons to having a manager adding the versions to the project:

1) When someone reports a bug, they can pick what latest version they have installed. If a bug is reported for build 12.1, then well, you can most likely ignore it. If its the most recent update, then something may have occurred with it.

2) When a bug is marked as "resolved : fixed", it is extremely helpful to have the version to select the "Fixed in version:" field. This then automatically fills out the Change Log listing for you, and everyone can see what was fixed in each version.

Anyways, its a tool, and thought I would bring up the idea of a manager. Pieter also has administration access, so he can assign managers too.

It should also preferrably not be one of the modders so that the modders can focus on the modding work instead. So who should do it? Suggestions appreciated. Personally I was thinking perhaps you could do it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

well, although i doubt you're serious, my internet's a little flukey. visits would be inconsistant.

I actually <i>was</i> serious. It might be a good idea. Depends on what you and other people think of it, of course.

well, gameplay-wise, i indeed know quite a lot about it. programming, not that much. but that doesn't really matter, as stated before. i would do it, but let's see what the others think.

That's the beauty of it: You don't really need to know much about the programming side. You just need to post bugs and updates. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

well, there's one problem: i'm a bit lazy, so it might take a while before i actually post a bug there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
