PotBS

From what I read here I can't see leaving VOC ..and I was actually trained to pay monthly ..FINALLY ..but from what I read ..well everywhere...this game just doesn't seem worth it.

But it isn't out YET ...lol...so we will see..I'll wait to see real reviews of the final version ..

I am sure if its any good the buzz will be rather LOUD right here on this forum.

If I am sure of one thing it is that ..lol..

VOC ..is ready to add an expansion..it seems just as this game is being launched....coincidence ??? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Im not intrested playing a mmorpg AGAIN! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Eh sorry mateys if anyone got hurt by what i said, but it's just this time wasting what i dont like and nerve eating what's bad for me brain!

If i EVER going to play a mmorpg again ..then i gotta be really stupit to do it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
If i wanna play a rpg i will try find a singleplayer rpg witch is not time wasting and is pleasure to play and where you can do things YOUR way ..like PotC Build Mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Just learned a new thing that PotBS has that rubs me wrong: Boardings suck.

• Boardings are done on only one ship, and only the top deck.
• Whoever is 'defending' a boarding action, the battle takes place on their top deck.
• If the defender wins, they get nothing for their victory, the attacker is retreated.
• If the attacker wins, they get your ship and cargo.

So uhm... does any of this ring a bell? How bout many many years ago for how the ORIGINAL PotC boarding was? LOL... ugh.

Actually that EISC game looked pretty awesome. I love the idea of being able to see all decks in a similar style to Star Trek Starship Builder <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> that looks awesome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Frankly POTBS can go die for all I care. Now we just wait for EISC to come out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Meanwhile has anyone seen Empire: Total War yet? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> The ship battles sound identical to POTC/Sea Dogs, though I am yet to see how boarding looks. It'll be interesting seeing 20v20 naval battles. Check it out at totalwar.com, they've got some screenshots of the ship battles. And yes there are crew on the decks.. and yes they do fire their muskets at boarding boats and yes they do load their cannons. I've heard rumors that Pirates will be featured in the game (though as freelancers) so I hope that makes it into the final game, cause it'd suck if they just made a faction "Pirates" just to replace the "Rebel" faction from Medieval2 :p. In a recent interview featured in a magazine it mentions the ship fighting, and it sounds identical to POTC.
Screenshot of Empire: Total War:

Again.. who needs POTBS <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

LOL i started a frustration thread? All i wanted to do was to reckognize the workers on this mod <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Anyway, that screenshot look A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!

Hehehe that screenshot. For all the wonderful look it has, the shadows on that deck are completely off for where the sun is, and not to mention no shadows for the crew, they look like they are floating =)

Yeah... I'm a stickler for lighting. When its done halfway, it looks bad. Either do it right, or don't bother is how I look at games with half done shadow technology.

Hm you´re probably right. Now I am looking at the details too! Noticed there is something weird aboud the capstan, like its C/P´ed into the main deck? Also, the collision detection when the two upper left ships are crossing eachothers directions, could be better? They look like they´ve merged <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But the waves and the ships are really nice done, I think.

Still that screenshot looks realy pretty cool. I don't ask for perfection, but it sure looks interesing. And don't forget: It's still work in progress. Perhaps they'll fix them weird issues still. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

It's a known fact that CA never fixes their lighting in the Alpha.. that usually takes place before the game ships.. hence why the shadows really sucked in Medieval2.. It's sometimes better to just turn them off so I've found, as it gives not just a speed boost but also looks better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

And yes the path finding in Total War has always been bad, don't worry about that. I'm expecting a realism mod to come out that fixes all the issues you guys are having with it.. and if it doesn't happen, make some noise on their forums and hope a fan sees your comments and decides to act on them. Because a lot of TW fans are like you guys, really into the historical accuracy of things.. if something is off even by a little bit it drives people nutz <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Hehe, well, I'm not so much the historical accuracy type (as the others would tell you hehe)... I am more of the type that likes to have my eyes tickled by clean graphics, my ears soothed by smooth sound effects, and entertained through good gameplay and well thought out design mechanisms (reality vs enjoyment).

Most of the things I have issues with in PotC are things we can't fix. They are hard coded deep in the core guts. Graphics stuff, and sound handling, the way it has a loading screen for any tiny thing you do etc. If the game could be cracked open, sent to the internet via opensource, then I think PotC would make a huge comeback as a bunch of people would dive into updating the engine a bit with some newer (even multiyear old stuff) routines and methods to make the game just 'pop' with greatness.

I wouldn't know about any of that though... I dont have background with the coding of such stuff. However I know some eager programmers would want to get their hands on any game that goes opensource. Look at the Marathon game (originally by Bungie) that JUST WONT DIE because they made it opensource!

I probably missed your point, with no intention to be ignorant, of course...But Raise My Bones From King Neptune´s Deep, that´s ugly graphics in Marathon!!

<a href="http://www.crownandcutlass.com/" target="_blank">Crown and Cutlass</a> must be an equal perfect example of the present level of opensource, how beautiful the illusion may ever be.

However, you are "the old guy" here and I´ll bet you and the former mod-teams "hit the wall" lots of times in your search for ways to make PotC perform better. And I must agree, a better graphics engine to PotC would be nice! But with no possibility of implementing modern graphics tools that could take the pressure a bit off the CPU(vertex shaders, pixel shaders, geometry shaders etc) I dont think PotC could ever be enhanced by any mod-team to perform according to your standards without crashing every single alpha testing machine in the universe.
My conclusion on the silence from Akella is, that they appearently still will be using the - sometimes crappy, sometimes wonderfull regarding on the environment - ENGINE.EXE for years to come <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

We will have to stick to what we have - which to me, is enough for now (that is, when I decide only to see the things I want to see <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> )

The only theoretic possibility we have is to port PotC to Age of Pirates' Storm 2.5 engine. I don't know how this can be done though. It's not a simple matter of replacing PotC's ENGINE.exe. I tried every simple thing I could think of to acchieve this and it all failed. It might require a lot of recoding of the PotC game code. It'd be great though. The best thing would be if Akella would get interested in our modding work and would be willing to support us and help us occasionally. It'd be great if they could make the Storm 2.5 engine work for PotC.

However, as far as I'm concerned the graphics aren't that important. I still think PotC looks pretty darn good for a game made in 2003. Sure there are better games graphics-wise, but we have the gameplay as well. One of the main reasons for the PotC modding team not starting work on Age of Pirates is because the only advantage AoP has are the graphics. The gameplay is hardly better than the original PotC game and certainly inferior to the Build mod. We didn't want to start from scratch again on AoP just for the sake of having better graphics, so we stick to PotC instead in order to keep improving the gameplay.

I don't even know how to. Apparently there is a contact person, but I don't know how to contact the contact person. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

LOL

Well, I´ll try to email that international PR-emplyee Valerie Avacheva, just to see if she answers....

Well, the Marathon reference was that it went from a 2d sprite based and 2.5d extrusion based flat texture game to ... uh... something better at the time of recoding with the opensource into whats known as Aleph One. I never really followed it after it went opensource... too much to deal with lol.

But anyhooooooooooo.......
