Post Build 12 settings - how do escape oxbay FCS?

Cpt Fabris

Landlubber
Ok, having had a long hiatus from POTC (been rather illicitely moonlighting with Sid Meier's offspring) I installed the Build12.1 and earlier tonight the most recent Post Build12 mods.

My question is this: Is it possible to turn off the beginning at oxbay? I've read of one person's problems leaving oxbay later in the plot due to random encounters with ships, but this was the first sail, effectively the moment after the annoying Keira Knightly voiceover.

Having decided to start with a nice Brig1 whlilst remaining at level 1 I get sunk inside a minute when the Oxbay French Invasion scenario runs...I cannot see anyway at all to survive this. Even with the arcade sailing on the fact that all 3 french ships are given firing solutions the exact moment you appear on screen/in the water means that after 3 broadsides even a newly fixed ship is in pieces. I can hardly fight my way out when I don't even have time to raise my sails before I sink. Realistic maybe, but ending up in a dingy with 0 cash and the french ships shooting my lifeboat makes the game frankly unplayable.

You must change you ship flag from British to another nation friendly to France. That way you will not get clobbered when you leave Oxbay as the French attack. Check you relations screen for a neutral nation, like the Portuguese etc. You will have to change flags several times during the game when you play the quests, some nations are always at war with the British (assuming you use the British flag), Spain for example and the Pirates. This should help you get out of Oxbay.

Hmmm. Eventually I did escape Oxbay at the 4th or 5th attempt (not without significant damage). I am rather sceptical that changing my flag would matter significantly. Fact is, the exact second that the cut scene ends and I am returned to the 3rd person at sea perspective all 3 french ships open fire... change flag? Fine, but I'm lucky to have a ship let alone a mast on which to raise it!

Whilst I have long been a fan of greater realism in gaming (and films for that matter) on the impressions of a single evening I would have to conclude that the some of the Post 12 Build project makes the game virtually unplayable. Out of practice I may well be, but there are many oddities:

Despite having neutral relations in flag and otherwise with the Spanish I 'limp' into Isla Muella without incident...upon leaving the fort (which until that point ignored me) it now opens fire with a vengeance. And latterly having decided (not without discomfort) to 'rig' the game by loading my ineffectual pirate with cash and buying a 70 gun warship as something of an experiment (called the Black Pearl naturally...yes I know it was a galleon in the film...) with little time at sea, 3 protracted battles and crew morale perpetually rated as 'good' at least, the mutinous dogs stole my ship upon the successful termination of a battle with some pesky dutch warships. With plenty of cash, plenty of food and rum, I can't entirely explain their behaviour beyond wondering if the Post 12 Build has a few minor 'issues'. Ok, so in reality the life expectancy of a pirate in the 'Golden Age' was perhaps four years if they were lucky, but thus far surviving four minutes is a cause for celebration.

You need to change the flag <b><u>before</b></u> you leave port.

You probably will be happier with Build 12 until some major bugs are worked out of Post Build 12.

Post Build was getting better bug wise until just recently with some new additions.

Hmmm, too much rum for me last night (consequently I feel groggy)...my apologies if my earlier posts had the manner of diatribes. It was the booze talking.

By changing flag before I leave the port I presume you mean before I exit the jetty and get back on board? Seems a little daft that, ok its a game and heavily modded but for the sake of realism you wouldn't actually know the French are coming (well unless you are a spy). Oh well, as it was my beaten up ship made it out (though I did have to reload four or five times until at least until SOME English ships were present to keep the French occupied. I suppose actually the difficulty is realistic...faced with a fleet blockading a port it would be hard to get out alive.

It's really the irritating mutiny that bugged me last night. Factoring everything in I can't see why the crew stole my ship. Then again having taken a while to realise there were new islands and a map I did rather sail aimlessly for (game-time) months looking for Redmond, but I swear I had plenty of food, rum and cash.

I did indeed like Build 12 (played a little) as I did earlier incarnations of the project. But the Post Build mod has some very good ideas (realistic cannons, pistols actually having ammo, greater variety in NPCs and items etc). But either I am in seriously bad nick (if you pardon the British colloquialism) or I seriously need to fiddle with the buildsettings.h file.

Changing you flag does significantly increase your chance of leaving port. You just need to do so before leaving, like Petros said.

As far as the mutiny is concerned: it seems that somehow the crew morale drops is exaggerated recently. Why? I absolutely don't know. I don't recall anything being changed there. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Maybe you should stick to Build 12 for the moment. The Post Build 12 mods have several known bugs and probably even more unknown ones. I am trying to my best to get some of it worked out, but it isn't really going too well. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I must admit that raising different colours certainly exerts an affect upon the treatment of my ship. I was positively amazed to get into Falaise de Fleur under French colours without meeting a watery grave courtesy of the fort. O'course they did take a few potshots at me on the way out...

I have persevered with the Post-Build12 modded game and am gaining immense pleasure from it. At least after reducing the number of muggers in town anyway (you would've thought the town guards kept some sort of order). Working nicely trading tobacco from Douwesen to Isla Muelle to acquire some capital and affects. I've not yet gone on the account apart from a few attacks on French merchants and some ill-advised attacks on pirates. Really though I've no interest in the game's plot...what care I if the French have Oxbay? I've no more quarrel with them than that of any nation.

Well, old Malcolm Hatcher mentions sighting the French fleet and recommends a false flag in the gamestart dialog. Problem is that few people really read that dialog anymore. Small wonder after listening to the old prattler oh so many times <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ahh, yes I did rather 'fast foward' poor old Malcolm. Didn't occur to me he might actually know something interesting. Pity you can't rehire him in the game as an officer (well I presume you can't)...you know, thought it'd be nice to retire and take it easy...then the French invade and ruin his peace...got bored, hey presto lets go on the account again. Of course he'd likely be rather too highly skilled unless the option didn't exist until a later point of the game or a certain level was reached.

well, it would be nice if he was invincible, like danielle, and have the ability to tell him your going treasure huntin', and have him come with you for the part of the game after your attack of greenford. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Got the same probs with build 12.1. Came in to Greenford under neutral flag, doing some landwork and then tried to flee. But even with changing the flags (got britain, portugese, pirat and neutral to choose), the french fort and the three french vessels attacked me. In the sock game I got away just with speeding up along the left edge of the bay, but in the mod the wind was holding me in the bay at first, there was no chance to get away. After up to twenty tries I got some help from other vessels and the wind turns fast enough ...

never had any problem like that with build 12.1 or 12. i just entered, my ehm...sad excuse for a ship, skipped the really annoying movie by pressing space, and ended up on the world map. if i try it with build 13, i do see the french ships, but they are neutral, so they don't attack me anyway. they become hostile after i hit F3, the movie played, and i got to the world map. no problems whatsoever!

You CAN'T change your flag in Build 12.1, which suggests to me that you're not actually playing Build 12.1. Which files did you install?

"build12_full.zip", size 77,7MB on my HDD, found <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=43&Itemid=53" target="_blank">here</a> (Title "Build v12.1 Full Download", date 06.06.2006), nothing else. When pressing F2 and chosing "International Affairs", I can se lect my colours with the effect, that I sail under different national flags. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

you can change them, but it doesn't effect your relations in build 12.1. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

It's been so long since I played Build 12.1. I thought you couldn't even change your flag in there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

fortunatly, i only just started playing build 13. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
