What if, rather than porting PotC to CoAS, we'd try to adapt the Storm 2.8 engine to work with PotC?
Or, more accuractely, adapt the PotC game to work with the Storm 2.8 engine.
We could do this based on a Starforce-sorted version of the ENGINE.exe file, PROGRAM and MODULES folders.
Of course we'd use the CoAS worldmap and any locations we'd want too and other than that, we'd keep our PotC stuff.

I am not adding to the Build in a direct manner, but I will sure stick around no matter what the decision will be.

Pieter: Does that not include the fact, that the user would still need to install CoAS first? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

Hook: I get your idea of reputation being badly influenced by any association to starforce <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> good one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

pirate_kk: I missed your opinion on porting to Corsair4.

Just so you know we english speaking ppl missed a large gap in the stormengine games, as far as "Return of the Legend" and "Dead Man's Chest", a lot of things could of changed in the code. It's not like there's a build for Age of Pirates... even though it would be nice...

Not sure if that's a good idea though! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

But that's absolutely true, which is why I'd very much want to have more information on the specifics of CoAS and the Storm 2.8 engine.

I think it would be something really nice, and a very successful achievement for our work, more over, it would allow the players who hasn't beasts as computer to keep in touch with the newest additions, and also enjoy this stuff, personally, that would be beyond my wildest dreams <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

Not sure about that; the system requirements for that proposition would be pretty much equal to the requirements for porting to CoAS.

May I say something? CoAS running on my P4 2.4 + 1024 ram <b>faster</b>, then current BUILD. IMHO - we'll not have any problem with system requirements.

P.S. Something about 40% of stuff from BUILD already ported <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Indeed, I would agree with Maximus. AoP seems to run faster overall than PotC on the same rig. And the western world release appears to have done away with Starforce entirely.

So that would seem to remove two of the potential negative points that initially were anticipated with AoP2.

Personally, I think we should finish build 14, then build 15 should be done for AoP2.

When K4 is released, then we can consider moving over to that engine if we want. But at least with AoP2, we are still using the same engine family that we've been working with for years.

MAXIMUS! How have you been doing lately? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
Have you been porting to AoP or CoAS? Last time I heard it was AoP, though personally I'd rather skip straight to CoAS of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

If the CaOS doesn't have Starforce I would be keen to eventually convert over... (After Build 14)

I havn't seen a copy of CaOS in Australia though (but I havn't really looked yet) so I might have to go onto Ebay or Amazon to get it. I might go and see if it is available here in a week or 2!

If starforce is removed, AoP CoAS is in 40% equal to build and additionally is running faster then it's in any sense incomparable better and I don't see reasons to continue with Build. Maximus will have easy way to put remaining 60%. Free market rule - further discussion seems to be pointless.

On the other hand, a bit sad to leave all those years put into PotC modding.

I imagine you'd need to actually get the game and play it to be sure your computer could handle it though, right?

Would you consider porting to CoAS <i>before</i> Build 14 is released?
Personally that strikes me as being rather troublesome, considering nobody has any thorough experience with the gameplay and bugs of CoAS yet.
Additionally the Build is also buggy on it's own, so when porting to CoAS, it'd be hard to distinguish between CoAS bugs, Build bugs and porting bugs.

At the moment, pretty much none of our modders actually HAS CoAS, of course, so we'd at least have to wait for that.
I'm hoping Maximus can elaborate a bit further on what he's done and what he still needs to do.

Personally I'm not sure if I'd be willing to port to CoAS already; I'd first want to do some proper playing of CoAS to know what that's about.
And it would indeed be sad to leave PotC Modding, though we at least wouldn't leave the Build mod and we could take all content that we want with us to the new platform.

If we in fact do turn out to do the port a lot earlier than expected, I'd suggest we keep the "Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons" title.
I don't particularly want to replace all instances where the name is used <i>again</i>. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

so pieter, you want to take a sequel of AoP, and make it a sequel of PotC <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

That does sound pretty good, no? I like it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I was rather sarcastic - you see, Maximus wrote something which I understood as a commercial for CoAS and I always hated comercials. I won't believe that program which, at least should have higher system requirements, would run faster than modded older game - even if we modded it poorly. He also hit my vanity, because all this time I was trying to create something better than dirty capitalistic swin*es who are selling mods as game sequels (AoP: CT was originally to be mod for PotC but Russian modders sold themseves to Akella and similarily is with relation AoP 1 has with AoP: CoAS, I think).

Additionally, moving currently to AoP 2: CoAS is equal to me to:
<i>Time to say goodbye.
Paesi che non ho mai
veduto e vissuto con te,
adesso si li vivro.
Con te partiro
su navi per mari
che, io lo so,
no, no, non esistono piu,
it's time to say goodbye.</i>
I don't want this, but if forced...

pirate_kk

PS. I never said that Build is bugs-free - it has many, but at least we try to remove them...

Oh! I had misunderstood you then. I admit I WAS rather surprised at what I saw there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

Don't worry; I have NO intention of porting to CoAS before Build 14 is done.
Not to mention forcing you to say goodbye is one of the most stupid things we could possibly do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

As I said before, I'm not sure if I will stick around for a post-Build 14 port to CoAS either.
Anyway, while we finish Build 14, we'll have PLENTY of time to find out more about CoAS, such as whether it's REALLY worth porting.

I'm up for any major changes you guys make, I'm gonna just sail with the wind with you guys. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

EDIT: Since no one seems to have the game right now I'll go out and get it right now...

If i can give my two cents, the suggestion of trying to adapt Storm 2.5 or 2.8 to POTC also seems interesting, and something as a great achivement for our mod ^^

Do you mean engine wise or Resource/Program folder wise? It would be cool to have an open source engine for this...

EDIT: Yeah we can mod AOP2, The Program folder is there, I haven't played yet though. Since we can mod we should port...
Note: They have documented info all about the program language used, Akella is helping us mod the game, This information should be translated and put in the Wiki...
Note: It's basicly the same game as Return of the Legend. That's why it was never released. There is some more things I haven't seen before... This is a okay base as a port. It needs some patches though! The game crashed on me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Well, I don't know precisely, what part of the engine changes graphics?!
