Commodore John Paul Jones

Commodore in the Continental Navy
Storm Modder
OK, the movie was good, but there is an air of emptiness now that I've seen it. It was excellent, fun, well crafted. The cinematography was great, and the visuals astounding. However there were a few things I didn't really feel good about. They set it up for a number four, but it could be weak and it would be really hard to make a good sequel because Orlando and Keira (not officially by Disney) confirmed to be out of the series if it continues.
The series just lost some flair there, whats a <i>Pirates</i> movie without the whole old crew?

Here are some things I think they should have done differently to tie up the trilogy better and still leave a slight chance for a fourth:

Some characters seemed to not live up to how they were anticipated and portrayed in the trailer.

Sao Feng - He should have lasted a little longer. Disney made a lot of noise about him and he just sorta... died. He should have decided to not fight, then show up just in time for the showdown. He needed to die to pass on captaincy and lordship to Elizabeth, but it should have been in a different way at a different time.
Wheatherby Swann - He was a governor, so why did he just give p like that? I say he and Norrington should have formed a stronger partnership and tried to join the other side, then killed by Beckett. He just should have lasted longer and been a stronger character.
James Norrington - WHY?! He was finally there! Then he just went out. He was a strong supporting character in the first movie and ended up being a key player in DMC, then he sorta had one or two scenes to give him the chance to turn good, then die. NO! I say he should have been left to face Bootstrap, believed to be killed, then show up at Shipwreck with the whole "I've come to do my part." He could have led the pirate fleet from a two decker stolen from Beckett while Sparrow and Jones faced off in the malestrom. I think it was necessary for him to die, to add drama and give him an avenue of escape for turning to the pirates a second time. I think he should have engaged the <i>Endeavour</i> and been sunk and killed to give Beckett and his ship more of a fearsome look and air of immortality and overwhelming odds.
Cutler Beckett - The whole slo-mo, splinters everywhere was interesting, but too impossible for me. A ship that big doesn't take a hit like that and he would have been pulp after all that crap started flying. Jack and Beckett should have faced off and then they should have used that cannon escape to get Jack back to the <i>Pearl</i> using the whole "Cutthroat Island, blow 'em away with a bloody cannon" thing.

The Pirate Lords - They made such a big deal about them, then Barbossa freed Calypso on his own and they sat there as the <i>Pearl</i> and <i>Dutchman</i> faced off. They should have sailed into battle, freeing Calypso, who suddenly explodes into a lightning bolt and going to the sky instead of becoming a moster woman, then had a huge battle with the EIC fleet. Some should have died, like the Frenchman or little guy with the turban and Mickey Mouse voice. The <i>Endeavour</i> should have been an unstoppable force, pounding ships to bits. Then after the <i>Pearl</i> leaves the malestrom and Jack and Elizabeth escape, he should have landed aboard the huge first rate to face Beckett. Then the <i>Dutchman</i> returns with Will at the helm and the <i>Pearl</i> comming about to join them in crushing the <i>Endeavour</i> as the EIC fleet breaks and the pirates swarm around Beckett's ship.

Then I say the movie should have ended with Beckett getting killed, Barbossa getting that nice hat promised in TCotBP and the <i>Endeavour</i>, Elizabeth as a captain and pirate lord to replace Sao Feng, Jack aboard the <i>Pearl</i>, and everyone sailing off to their respective seas again. Then, with Jack's quest for immortality still unfinished, he sails off into the horizion looking for his treasure as the <i>Dutchman</i> and <i>Empress</i> sail off together and the <i>Endeavour</i> parts to be the biggest, most powerful pirate ship to ever sail.

(About the third question in the poll... think it out and give REALLY good ideas if "Yes", Disney might send scouts to these forums for thoughts and opinions as we are a big community, so they might see some good stuff here.)

EDIT: About Pirates 4, I think they need to make a fourth to right the wrongs in 3 and give the crowd a better ending or a possible new line of adventures. But it has to be REALLY REALLY good. 3 just wans't enough to end the series in a nice little bow, so I think it must continue if we are to have a good set of results and a pleased bunch of fans and moviegoers.

Well, I haven't seen the movie yet so I'll hold off giving a more detailed post and voting in the poll till I have. I just wanted to say for now though that I thought it was a mistake to make the two sequels back to back, because whatever mistakes you make in the second one are bound to be being made in the third as well and there is no way to fix it. At least if they had filmed the second one only and then received feedback about it from movie audiences they could have seen where they possibly went wrong and fixed it in the third movie.
Of course, I'm basing my opinions on the reviews I've read. I'm sure I'll enjoy the third movie to a degree because I liked the first one so much. The second movie was a bit flat and overlong and many of the characters seemed a bit forced. I would have liked them to have kept it more simple and not attempted to blow the movie up and all out of proportion.
I think the charm that made the first movie so good is the first casualty when you go overboard like that and it leaves the sequels with an air of emptiness about them, to borrow your phrase.

I also think that Norrington had to live longer. But I think that the pirate lords had to be shown a bit longer, cause they only showed up in the fleet of jack, and then they where gone after the pearl had fought the dutchman!

Aye. I think they should hold off any planning on number four, if they decide to make one, and gather reviews, opinions, etc. first. It would really help them in the end.
Thomas, you will love the third. Everything is so big and exciting and the visual aspect of the movie is flat out amazing.

I saw it last Thursday <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> I am going to see it a second time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye! Me and a bunch of friends saw it Friday (We had ordered tickets ahead of time for what was going to be opening day... then it was changed.) But I'm going with my family again this week. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

What fourth, i thought this is the end of the trilogy? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Ah, it was supposed to, but Disney has said that if the third calls for another or if the crowd wants more, they might start a fourth or even a second trilogy. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
I personally would like to see a fourth to correctly end the series and a prequel to set the stage for TCotBP.

SPOILER

was it me or did the movie try to tell us that Jack's father is Morgan? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />
Btw i think the movie was too short..

Jack's father was Captain Teage Sparrow, former pirate king and keeper of the code. He was played by keith Richards. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I liked how they showed Davy Jones, The Crew of the "Flying Dutchman", and the "Flying Dutchman" it's self pre nasty nauticle crustiness. Also I like how they explained that the crew, ship, and captain looked the way they did due to them not performing the task that they were given.

Lots of neat old sailor's lore in the movies. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Sorry Commodore John Paul Jones, I must disagree with most of the things you suggested.

I agree that Norington could have lived a bit longer and I wish, the battle in the end would have seen the fleets fighting each other and not just the Pearl against the Dutchman. Oh, and Calypso should have had a bit more important role then just creating the maelstrom.

But other than that, I'm happy with the movie and like how it ended.

In my eyes there is no need for a 4th movie. The story about Will and Liz is completed and with Jack and Barbossa we are at the the same situation as it started in PotC1 (Barbossa Captain of the Pearl (no curse this time though) and Jack in his small boat ready for any kind of adventure and maybe with the goal to get the Pearl back).

If they really do a number 4, then only if Jack and barbossa are in (same actors of course) and without Will and Liz. I don't have anything against them, but their story is told and they should be left out of it.

But what I would rather see then a 4th movie is maybe something that happened with Star Wars. It would be great to have some really great books (from talented writers) about Jack and Barbossa. Of course you would have the crap novels then too, but if it would produce somthing like the Star Wars books from Timothy Zahn too, then that would simply great.

EDIT: I saw the movie a second time today and I noticed that the two fleets where actually fighting against each other. Shortly after the maelstrom is gone and the weather cleared you can see smoking ships everywhere. So the two fleets clashed against each other!
I heard they cut 20 minutes out of the film while finalizing it, so maybe we're goint to see some battle scenes in the "deleted scenes" section on the DVD release.
