Pirates! Gold Problem

SirDrago

Landlubber
Hi,

With all the new "Pirates" hype, I decided to install Pirates! Gold again today. Well, so far so good, but I have one problem. A few minutes after I start playing, the game crashes. I can detect some ships without it crashing, but then it always happens when I'm sailing and detecting another ship.
Oh yeah. I don't have any sound either, but I think I can fix that problem more easily than the weird crash problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm using Win98 First Edition btw.

With win98 i thought you would probably be ok,

your using one of the go slow programs for your computer?

No i dont use slow programs. Its working now better. I installed the latest patch for Pirates Gold and it doesnt quit so often anymore. But sometimes it still does it.
And i still couldnt get the sound to work :D

ah ok , aslong as its working :D

If worse comes to worse you could always get an amiga emulator and play that version of it

Amiga has a Pirates Gold version or do you mean the normal Pirates version?

no its just normal pirates, but the only real differnece between pirates! and PG! gold was the graphics and the amiga version is probably the prettyest version of them all ( from memory )

Hm i always had the impression that Pirates! Gold was a little bit easier on the harder levels than the original Pirates... or maybe i only got better xD:

You got better.
But in Pirates Gold you don´t have to take sunsights to estimate your position, you can always see it on the globe in the captain´s cabin, in the original version you had to use a paper map.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with selecting the wrong Pirate Flag ? ...

If you encounter a pirate and do NOT look in the manual to which the corresponding flag belongs, you will exit to desktop.

And that's how I got hooked to the game, to the first Amiga version...

Later on I got the PC Pirates! version (DOS disks) , and a lot later the PC Pirates! Gold version (Dos `CD-Rom`)... took me some searching in my room though, to find them back <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I found the Windows version there, a while back... and since I own all other 3 versions (Amiga version, Pirates! version , Pirates! Gold for DOS version) legal anyway, I downloaded it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />:

On top of that comes that I just couldn't find the Windows version in stores anymore <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I got Pirates gold for windows, and there's definitely something wrong with the game, aside from the swordfighting problem I mentioned under the swordfighting thread. The Land battle controls aren't responding, and if they do, they respond with massive delay, which means I am unable to control my forces when attacking a city via land. Also, sometimes when I capture new booty, my gold reserves get nullified so that for example when I enter a battle with 80,000 gold aboard my ship and capture the enemy ship, the plundering screen shows that I now only have 8 gold left. I haven't lost any of my ships or suffered any other losses whatsoever, the gold just disappears. Also, sometimes the game locks up when entering a port.
Is there a patch available or am I just plain unlucky?

Jeff from Atari touched base on their being problem. It was meant for a 386 running Dos with 580k conventional memory ... Not for a blazingly fast PC running Windows 98 and up ... There are going to be major problems.

There IS a patch for Pirates Gold! and you can find it on the net. Check what version you have and then check the patch version. The patch corrects some control issues, and fixes a lot of bugs that cause the game to crash.

I managed to find the DOS version and it has the same problems. Also, the newest patches seem to be "version 3", which is the same as the game available on the net. I could live with all the other glitches but the fact that my gold reserves occasionally drop to zero for no reason sucks the guts out of the game.

Pirates!!

The links above to download Pirates! don't seem to work...does anyone else have a link for this awesome game?

I've been playing Priates Gold using `D-Fend` thru DOSBOX 6.1 (I think) flawlessly for a few months now. Although there was some trick to the sound configuration which I forget. Been playing a lot of DOs Games with this emulator.

Running 2.4 GHZ and XP Pro.

Yeah, with DOSBOX, it works just fine, that one emulates a whole oldfashioned PC. The simulated sound card is configured already, the exact configuration has to be in the readme of Dosbox. Just enter it in the sound config of Pirates and there you go.
