I just received my November copy of Computer Games and it has a nice preview of Pirates! It has some nice info, I suggest you all check it out. I'll try to post an interesting line or two later.

I was a little surprised myself.

Its a nice three page article. They mentioned that it was a `pre-beta` build. Here are a couple of notable quotes.

"Geezers will be happy to know that Meier has stuck closely to the format of the 1987 game. Unlike say, DOOM 3, this really is a remake of a golden oldie."

"...battles seem relatively simplistic. Most of the time, they involved stalking a victim by remaining on its stern so it couldn't line us up with it's cannons."

"Engagements were always circling affairs that ended fairly quickly. There's a lot of variety in the enemy ranks, at least. We didn't have to fight the same vessel twice, and Firaxis claims that over two dozen ships (including fluyts, barques, galleons, sloops, and more) will be included in the final build."

"The three `ship-board` duel locations include stairs that you can leap and banisters that you can slide down like a skateboarder grinding a rail."

"Ship detail is impressive during sea battles, and the sea itself rolls in a convincing fasion."

"Audio is even more impressive. The musical score has the sweep of a Hollywood epic, complete with various tunes that could almost make us feel the spray of saltwater on our faces."

I found this one very interesting.

"...purchase upgrades like cotton sails and `fine-grain` powder,..."

I also noticed two other upgrades in a screen shot, boarding platform and bronze cannons.

That's as much as a dare post to keep out of trouble. Please ask me any specific questions and I will answer if the article addresses it.
