A good game buried underneath bad controls.
by George Roush

January 6, 2009 - While touch controls are a great way to innovate, they have to be done right or your game is going to suffer. Unfortunately, Pirate Master III's controls kill what is actually a pretty good game.

You play as a lone pirate making your way through 14 different levels on a quest to retrieve five statues hidden in each level. The game is a 2D side-scroller with spike pits, lava holes, vines, enemies, baskets and other obstacles you must get by to collect the statues and move on to the next level. Once you touch the first statue, though, you awaken a curse that starts the timer on each level. You have until the timer reaches zero to collect all of the remaining statues.

Helping you out is a map located on each level. The map isn't really that necessary since the levels aren't that big -- they're just tricky. Blue orbs are scattered on each level and when broken, give you extra time. If you punch the orb, you gain 2 seconds. If you kick the orb (a power you receive in the game) you earn five seconds. Not sure why the programmers even had the 2 second option since nobody will bother to punch the orbs if they can earn an extra three seconds by kicking them. You gain more abilities later on like jump kicks and throwing rocks.

You start the game with three lives. Lose a life and you lose one heart. After each level you're given the option to save your progress, something you may reconsider if you're going into the next level with only one heart left. Health potions can be found, but they don't really matter because you can die very easily. I hated the way the game carries over your life count into the next level. The game is so hard because of the controls (that I'll discuss in a bit) you should get three lives for each level.

I really like the look of Pirate Master. For some reason it reminded me of an old Commodore 64 or Apple II game with a touch of classic Prince of Persia. The pirate is animated nicely as are all of the traps, puzzles and enemies. No music, though, and the sound effects are pretty minimal.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
