No Nation + Piracy + 1600 Era = Easy Game? nah dont think so

Zhaker

Landlubber
My situation:

- Started Swashbuckler, Medicine and 1600 Era
- Gone with Spanish and Received me a Pinnace (Sweet)

I started first off attacking a nearby port, easily done, since I had the same amount of soldiers. Then already Spain decided a 2k bounty on me, and all Spanish ports are against me heheh... DOH!

I'm constantly on the run, trying to get men (which is hard since settlements have no men to hire and that Spain Ports are gonna open fire on me).

I find that its prolly not easy as people said it would due to the fact that:

- Without a backing of a nation, your reliance are going to be Settlements, Pirate Havens, Jesuit Missionaries and also Indian villages. And I have no clue where they are since I got no Rutter and I started out :p.

- Men are hard to come by, since they will always fall due to battling. And with only Havens as my means to replenish men, thats not easy.

- Costs will be a concern since I cant rely on trying to get to Count and getting free repairs or even Duke and free upgrades. In fact I cant get no upgrades until I raid a town (yea easy too with so few men :p ).

- Hard to sell supplies since most wont be able to purchase everything to where I need to sell it. Unless I pillage a whole huge town and by then it might be too weak to even purchase all my goods in the first place...

So ermm any tips for starting out hehehe, I prolly guess my first things are:

- Find Pirate Havens so I can replenish my men (would be useful but max is about 20 - 40, never seen higher of men to get than say from a Port).

- If I find Pirate Havens I need to prolly plan how to make money (prolly use my Pinnace to raid and get ships and plan on a big army for big pay off).

- Use every advantage of pillaging and plunder so I can upgrade ship (I dont know if I can take ships).

- Try and not slay every "named" pirate so early in the game, maybe 2 to 3 pirates per expedition.

- Try and make relationship with Indians so I can ask them for Lost Cities.

- Have at least 1k for able to purchase whereabouts of family.

Playing in the 1600 era isn't easy. Especially if you decide to piss Spain off since they control like 80%+ of the ports at the start. That's what I did though and I had a blast. I made friends with the other countries pretty fast and hung around the Florida Keys area for awhile helping protect against Spanish Invasions, building up my money that way as well as my fleet. Might wanna try that strategy. I'm gonna do it again for my next game and try a different strategy though.

YOu might want to recuit enough crew with the prime objective of taking over the smallest spanish settlement in the area and installing a governor who is friendly to give you a base of operations. I played a rogue career at 1620s and had a great time. I might do a 1600's one soon.

Hrmm.. I dont really wanna ally with anyone....

I guess I'll put in a dutch port somewhere for the hell of it and just ignore dutch pleas :p, my aim is to piss EVERYONE off, not just the Spanish.

EDIT: Darn it there is just too many goods for sale and only ports can only purchase them all, not only that its impossible to NOT ally with a single port (well meaning that you dont rely on being friends with a port, more of the I will plunder your port and hold it for ransom while I gather men and goods for myself), the only way is perhaps these side quests that sorta does a peace offering a bit, but that limits my mobility abit by somewhat, and restricts me to plundering gold... I guess thats the price to pay when you have no NATION to back it up.... Though funny thing in 5 minutes I accumulated 15k gold and 150 tons of Luxeries and 150 tons of Sugar.. And 2 Royal Galleon and a Trade Galleon... And I thought it was hard getting money :p.

I see what you are getting at now. Well, don't ally yourself, just take advantage up the dutch merchants and the tavern maybe.

I have never played the 1600 era or played on Swashbuckler, so I don't know if it's different, but in my games, you can get upgrades at some of the pirate havens. Of course, you will have to pay, and there will be no way of knowing in advance which one might offer what upgrade.

I did not think this was even possible. All I have been able to do is buy/sale goods from/to them and tell them who to attack. Is it possible they will give you a lost city map?

Cap'n Toast: Yea I got no choice, unless someone Mods it so that a pirate can also be able to get 126 Fame as well hehehe <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />. Through making a huge bounty as well as accumulating Luxuries and Gold.

bigchief: I didnt know so far about 10 havens I been through never got a chance to upgrade <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />.... Shows you how much I know with 126 fame (absolutely nothing :p ).

GIJoe: I think from the `Pirate-O`-Pedia that "some" indians know whereabouts about lost cities, whether this is true or not remains to be seen as all I been doing to find lost cities is dance with Beautiful daughters <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />.

After I read this I thought I had remembered reaidng that somewhere else also... I quickly checked the `Pirate-O`-Pedia and it does not say that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Talk to Chief;
he may be willing to attack a nearby city for you.

Trade with Chief;
Buy and sale goods....

Thats all it lists. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> But I still have a faint memory of reading what you suggested somewhere else. And now I am thinking, hmm, what exactly are the native artifacts for. Why should we need to impress the Indians? We can already trade with them no prblems...

EDIT: I looked under Indian village to get the above, BUT, If you read NATIVES it states this;
...native chiefs can be pursuaded to help your cause if you have a (Special Item). <span style='color:darkred'>Legend holds that some tribal leaders even know the location of a lost city of gold</span>

So... has anyone ever had a chief give them a map for a lost city?

Might dem artifacts hep durin' land battles wid Injuns, ye thinks? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Yea I am trying to do it I think you need the 2 special items and prolly show indians a successful raids as well.

Also whats the diff between a Pirate Raiding and an Indian Raiding, is it how much gold is left and how efficient they are in Raiding a port?

Pirate raiders take money away from the town. Indians attack the population and run the people away. Towns will often become more wealthy after an indian attack. The bartender will tell you that an indian attack will get rid of some of the `riff-raff`. Both kinds of attacks can reduce the town's garrison. It may just seem that way in my games, but the indian attacks appear to be better at reducing the garrison.

LOL says the <span style='color:darkred'>BIGCHIEF</span>. Methinks you are a little biased. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Methinks he's right tho, GIJoe! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

That could be. I know some games I will send pirates to attack a city and they win, (mountains of gold and jewels), but the city loses ZERO troops. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

How come I never get mountains of jewels and gold when I plunder a city?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

Maybe you haven't plundered the *right* city? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> You have to go after one that is designated "Wealthy". Unfortunately, these also have LOTS of troops - so you have to plan carefully. I like it that the natives will go attack the city first, and soften it up for you, so that when you go in, you'll have an easier time of getting around the troops that are left. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Oh the wealthy ports be giving you tons o' money, that's be certain. But I want my MOUNTAINS of jewels and gold. Arrrr, that truly be a haul if I ever be seein' one. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

@GIJoe: If pirates attack a city, its garrison gets reinforced (because of all those merchants complaining to the gouvernor) instead of weakened. Indians will kill off troops without affecting the wealth of a city (what would indians want to do with gold, anyways?).

Good point and one I hadn't really thought about until recently. I've been using pirates to mess with the economy of certain nations in my current game. And definitely be sending indians to a port your about to sack if you don't have alot of men. Helps alot. Especially if you can send more than one indian raid.
