Ahoy Queen Anne's Revenge, welcome aboard mate! :dance

There are really only two things that are required to become a modder, a willingness to help, and a willingness to learn, everything else is negotiable! There are certain other skills that make it easier, but those two are the most important! If you can use a text editor, figuring out the rest just takes a bit of time. Most of us new absolutely nothing about modding when we started, all we new is we had found a good game, a game filled with bugs that could have been so much more than what it was, so we set out to fix it as best we could because no one else would.

If you take a look at the two PDF documents included with Build 14, you will get a pretty good sense of the history of PA, and the history of the Build Mod. Also included in the Tutorials and History manual, you will find a whole lot of tutorials written by the original modders that will help to teach you the basics of modding. Some things have changed a bit over the years, but the basics are still the same. You can also download just the Tutorials and History manual through a link in my sig, if you haven't downloaded the full New Horizon's build yet.

If you have any experience with any programming language, that will make things a bit easier, but it is not a requirement. The game it's self is written in C, but if you have ever dealt with Basic, or even just messed with Batch files, it is all pretty similar. Most of the files you will need to edit are simply text files that are compiled by the game when it is run. All you will need to edit those files is a good text editor like Notepad++, but even Notepad will work just fine.

Most of the others files are graphics files, so any experience with graphics programs such as Photoshop or Gimp is a big plus there. Some of the more complicated things, like designing ships, involve Maya. Almost all of the support programs you will need can be downloaded from PA's download section, or from our FTP. The original game was written almost 10 years ago, so most of the support programs needed are that old as well. Some people have also done a lot of modding with the sound and music files as well.

And as Pieter says, we are always willing to help if you have questions. I hope that helps point you in the right direction mate.
