Movie-Style Duel

LOL! Nobody should die, it's just got to be random encounters with a sparring partner, a friendly rivalry with no actual point except to perhaps add experience points and sharpen your dueling skills. Maybe it could end with one or the other of you being disarmed (NOT DEAD, SORRY!), and the other being respectful enough to hand you back your sword and swat you on the butt and send you on your way - no clear winner, just a recurring character who loves to annoy you when you least expect it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

The witty dialog has to be inbetween the sword swings, just like in Princess Bride.

MAN I would LOVE to do this!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I wish I had the time! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

[whine] But why not die? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> [/whine]

I think Cat's got the Mickey Mouse infection! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> We're <b>pirates</b>! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> But what do you think of the Black Pearl ability, Cat? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Just one thing, when did giving Barbossa the artifact come into this? I didnt mean that, the baddie wasnt ment to be Barbossa. You sink the BP (difficult battle, but its not invincible) and when they re-build it, they are drawn to your power and therefore your will. Or, you board it, duel Barbossa, capture the ship, and use Rico's summoning ability. Then the quest is to capture every fort in the game, and take the Carribean. Then, all the governors put aside their differences (Yes, even England and France) and take a last stand against you, your men, the Pearl (It automaticly comes in this battle) and anyone else loyal to you. Then you have to crush the resistance on every island, and when you do that, the evil officer person sails back to Khael Roa, and you follow them. They go to the middle of the temple, and when you follow them into the chamber (Its easier to know where to go because you follow them, and s/he leaves a trail, in case the skellies hold you up) you go to the artifact room, and a final duel for power comes.

"You didnt think I could leave someone as powerful as you so close to my inner circle, did you? You are a fool, I have the artifact, and you have nothing. Die!"

<i>difficult final duel</i>

<i>when s/he is at half health, s/he runs away</i>

"You are strong, I woulnt have expected this after I stole the artifact. no matter, your days are finished!"

"Not damn likely!"

<i>difficult final duel</i>

<i>s/he is dying</i>

"I knew that one day you would do this *cough* but I didnt think you could so soon, especially when Ive been draining your power *cough* You have the right to be the master of the Carribean, and lord of all the world. *cough* you were always the strog one *cough* you gave me the fire to do this *cough* and you, at last, get the power you always deserved *cough* and I have got what I deserved for trying to take your power"

"You knew I would always win. And you knew the risks, and Im proud you took the chance you got. Now I must finish what I started"

"Take the artifact, and give me an honourable death"

"Goodbye, old friend."

And thats it. Finally completed (you can guess what happens next easily enough)

Apart from moral cosiderations, all that dying is good for is that you'll have to reload a saved game. Where's the fun in that ?

Well, I meant the death of the person you duel, not your death... And, after all, it's a pirate game... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I think.

Hmh, Rico, you're apparantly saying this to provoke, so let me provoke back:
If you want splatter, why aren't you playing egoshooters instead of POTC ? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

Death has some sort of drama in it. the Kato sort of thing is a good idea, but with a quest where someone does get killed, it adds drama. The Kato thing could be adapted, though. Ill see what I can do.

My idea originally stemmed from the thought that my own personal avatar in the game, Catalina de Erauso, a real historical person, was mainly notorious for the amount of men she killed during (then illegal) duels... She liked to gamble, and got into a LOT of duels - and survived... She even unwittingly killed her own brother in a duel, a fact she discovered only after his death. She was disguised as a man, and he'd not seen her since she was a very young girl, so he did not recognize her, and in the darkness she did not recognize him until after he was dead. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> Kinda a sad story, really.

But... The idea of a friendly rival swords(wo)man randomly attacking you out of nowhere with only one thought in mind - to exchange witty, taunting dialog while "playing" at dueling but not ever really meaning to kill each other. Just a random encounter that takes place like the Vice City mod - only with witty dialog during the repeated fights.

No one should die - it's meant to be an entertaining interlude while you go about the archipelago.

Perhaps there should be some kind of eventual "peace" between the rivals - so the dialog does not repeat and get boring... The idea being that you are still <i><b>friendly</b></i> rivals.

My idea is just that, an idea... What you guys do with it is not my concern - take the idea for the dialog-interrupted duel and run with it, make a quest, if that's what you want - I can't do the coding for you as I have too much on my plate as it is, but I will be very happy to assist where I can if you have any questions. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

One problem I see off the bat is that you can't have dialog when your sword's drawn. We need to see if we can find out how to change that... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

It's done in the tutorial with the swordpracticing. I reckon that should be able to be adapted.

You mention to Danielle that all the years you've known her you've mainly spent in competition with her...

Or, another alternative is a Duel Ring. You duel people for money, and they slowly get more difficult, etc. and you win... lets say 10% of the bets placed against you, and you have to fork out 500 to 50000 if you lose, depending on the difficulty of your opponent.

You can make a quest event occur during dueling, but in order to start dialog you have to make both dialog chars put away their swords (which you can indeed do via script).
But no, sfaik you can't make dialog happen while swords are drawn.

Well, I like both ideas. But Malcolm mentions assasins wanting to kill you. There could be some witty dialogs between you and the assasin too. But as I said, I like both. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ty" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

Oh yeah the PB as summonable ally idea is real good... incentive to actually try and beat the main quest.

And so is the bit about a dueling ring... I'd thought of that when Pieter gets fistfighting all good and working, I mean it could be a boxing ring but there'd be gun and sword options too. Like, I've been playing some Knights of the Old Republic lately, and in the cantinas you can get assignments from Hutts... like in this one is a fighting ring and you have to work your way through five opponents, no death just injury, and they give you a free medpack when you're done. In another cantina you can get assignments for bounties and come back and collect your money.

The game's designed very similiarly to PotC, so there are some things it does with the RPG format that could be adapted to our game. For instance other characters behave differently depending on what outfit you're wearing... There ought to be some difference in PotC like if you're wearing some soldier's uniform. I never bother getting them otherwise. And the bounty thing ought to be assigned by the pirate leader on QC, as his own version of governor's boat-sink quests; or else introduce a similiar character maybe in a smuggler town.

I always had Dark Jedi Knight Robes on in KotOR II, so I dunno. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> And there was a fighting ring in KotOR II, on the mandalorian base, 5 opponents and no death, as you say, Alan. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> This would, IMHO, be a good idea for PotC. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Only the fistfighting mod was actually a nescessary fix for the disarming mod and that one isn't working. Fistfighting, as it is now, is basically like fencing without a sword; your rank + a random bit of luck determines your punch strength. If you punch hard enough, you'll knock out your opponent. And blocking is no use. Anything that could still be improved on that? Except for proper animations and, possibly, better "WHACK" sounds?

Ah, you've played Kotor as well! Thats where I got the Idea from! The Star Forge could also be part of this, a large army to defeat, with you and a couple of others (Danielle, Lucas etc.) and you are all at lvl 60 or so, and lots of enemies continually come up against you.

<div align="right"></div><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Yes! The Tutorial is a good model for this exercise - get injured up to a point (regardless of which side) and then stop for dialog (and resetting your injuries), then start up again. This could go on for several sets of witty dialog, and then your opponent could just run away after a parting smartass retort, only to surprise you later with another duel. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Or you could put both in, and you dont know which one is the guy that wants to kill you and the one that just pulls out a load of smartass lines.
