Master And Commander: worth watching?

Fango

Landlubber
Is the movie, "Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World" any good? I'm not sure if it involves pirates, but I rather not knowing. I always liked Russell Crowe's work, esp. in "Gladiator" and "Beautiful Mind". Anyway, it seems to be an 17th/18th century marine story, so I already like the theme.

Let me know; no spoilers!

The movie is _very much_ worth watching. I hope I'm not spoiling it when I say that it concentrates very well on describing life at sea.

Also, when you have seen the movie, I recommend and you immediately find yourself Patrick O'Brian's book "The Master and Commander" and start reading the `20-book` series. It captures the essence of the period extremely well, while also offering some exciting battles and hilarious humour.

I would agree that it is the best movie to date detailing the life of naval sailors of the Age of Sail. The scenery is beautiful, the battles amazing and the music is very good as well. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Excellent movie, well worth your time - completely absorbing from start to finish, and incredibly detailed - the cinematography is incredible!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Im with the above, i thought it was a great movie <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Aye!! Great movie! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

The movie is great. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> If possible, buy the DVD for your collection. This movie needs to be watched more than once, its that good. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aye, great seagoin' fun! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Are you kidding??? It's a historical nightmare - why, they featured the wrong drumroll when "beating to quarters" and couldn't even use the proper period container when passing port around the dinner table! And what's a Master and Commander doing in a `Post-Captain`'s uniform anyways???? Sheesh!!!!!

Kidding! Kidding! I loved the movie to death. The above complaints aren't my own and I'm only parroting those `spoil-sports` cuz I'm feeling bratty at the moment <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye, Bilgemunkey! Thar truly be many curiosities peppered throughout dat movie, but Fred Bob still be enjoyin' it a lot! Fer instance, havin' read de whole series `2-1`/2 times through, jus' finished Far Side o' de Werld, Fred Bob kin tell dem folks took a lot o' liberty! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> Although de publishers made special editions o' both books (#1 Master and Commander and #10 The Far Side of the World), the movie follows neither story very closel! Anudder thang be de way de Ship's Master argues wid de Captain Aubrey about whether tew chase de ship around de Horn or tew head on home! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Dat ain't de way o' de Royal Navy back then at all! Ye didn't speak unlest de Captain be speakin' tew ye first! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> In de books, de Surprise rounds de Horn BEFER catchin' up wid de quarry, and it ain't at de Galapagos either! But however much de stories be butchered, de resultin' movie has a very O'Brian flavor indeed and be well worth de watchin'! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

great movie! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

An image that has stuck with me from the movie - when they are in the ice, there's a very brief pan of the ship - lines all studded with ice - and one poor, `nearly-frozen` fellow sitting in the head on the bowsprit, pants around his ankles. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cold.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":brr" border="0" alt="cold.gif" />

If you're interested in the `real-life` inspiration for Jack Aubrey (and Horatio Hornblower), check out this <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cochrane,_10th_Earl_of_Dundonald" target="_blank">link.</a> This site also contains a link to a free `e-book` on the life of Admiral Lord Cochrane. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Wow, there's some great links on that page along with the info! Thanks, Mad Jack! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
