Life as a Smuggler/Trader?

gord96

Landlubber
hello all,

is it possible to just smuggle and trade and not pirate? I enjoy the pirate part but would like to try a game where i just smuggle and fight off pirates....will a crew stay with you if your a smuggler (as I imagine it is not quite as lucrative as pirating)??? just wondering if anyone tried it.....thanks

For some of the time periods smuggling/trading is the suggested way to play. I think it is entirely possible, but probably more challenging to keep your men happy.

i know, I like that part too....having a great game right now pillaging spanish interests....but I also like just sailing around from port to port selling stuff....would like to try a game like this.....fun to sail from like Port Royale to Barbados and seeing that it took like 5 months to get there....fun stuff....also be cool to fight off pirates instead of being one all the time

ddmagnan,

i never thought of that....in the manual it says the early eras aren't much for pirates or privateers so I guess smuggling might be the way to go

It's probably very difficult to increase your fame points as a peaceful trader. I wish it ain't so, but being a trader probably will make you only a butler or worse when you retire. Then again, by not engaging in swordfight, you may have a longer career. Anyone knows?

lets go with Barbados to POrt Royale since there is no way in hell i'm sailing all the way against the wind, it will take 2 yrs dang it

quite frankly i hate sailing east or west

East takes too long and when i go West i know evenually i'll have to turn around and head East <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

i don't find going east that bad......just have to find that angle and ride the edge of a few storms.....I always hit Curaco? (Dutch Port) first then head north east to Barbados....lots of good money down there as there is like 10 spanish ports along the South American coast

This is interesting, I thought this game was not a trading game, but pure piracy. I guess I can conclude that:

You can be a trader, but the whole point of the game is to gain advancement through battle and fighting. The only reason to trade is if you are low on cash and weak.

This isn't Sea Dogs or Pirates of the Caribbean, mate.

I spent an entire year running sugar between St Kitts and the surrounding islands. I made a good bit of easy money, spent little time "sailing into the wind" and finally had to quit when I had saturated the market to the point where the prices dropped and my profits decreased.

This game not really about any one thing. If you like trading, you can do that too. If you like fighting and "privateering", it certainly pleases there as well. It's pretty open ended in that sense, and unless you play every game to "win", there are all sorts of ways to get enjoyment out of it.

yeah, I might have made better use of that year by sacking more towns, but I was having a fun little merchant captain diversion.

I chose to trade not because I was weak or needed cash. I had divided plunder and sent a pretty large crew on vacation, chose to keep a merchantman that I had taken prior to that as my flagship, and since I noticed there was quick money to be made, I started up a new expedition, with a small, easy to please crew and went about my merry way. I had fun, even though I didn't make many "fame" points.

I once ended up in a game where there was only one "enemy", so I spent quite a bit of time just sailing from port to port with goods, exploring the Caribbean and "enjoying the view" (so to speak).

But to me, I like the game more when I've got LOTS of adversaries, ships to sink, towns to plunder! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

With the seeming point of the game to be able to allow the gamer to play his own story it only takes a dash of imagination to make this game a severe drain on time. Having spent the vast part of many a game watching the once mighty Spanish being plundered towards an early grave I recently adopted a vigilante `pro-Spain` pirate approach albeit a highly unsuccessful one. Still it seemed to clear the air and allow my next game's captain a free conscience <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Whilst you may only be a small pirate, you can do a pretty good job at shaping the balance of power around the seas.

Speaking of which, this game does have potential to become a strategy game. All it needs is adding a few victory conditions or objectives like helping your nation dominate the Caribbean. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> A good idea for future expansion or mod.

Bah! Death to the Spanish, Dutch and French! The English shall rule all!!!

Well, that's how I hope my game plays out... And by golly I'm doing my part!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Have some rum for your success <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

The only problem with trying to play a `pro-spaniard` is that , with the only 3 main villans, Mendoza, Montalban, and Raymondo all bieng Spanish, you cant possibly ever hope to save your family without having to attack their Spanish Galleons lol.

I did say albeit highly unsuccessful <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> My conclusions at the end of that one were, Never Again. Let them burn <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
