Hey, so I've read 3/4 of the posts on the forum and want to thank you guys for some great tips and tricks of the pirate trade.
However one question has been asked several times, but not answered: if you get a map with no X, is the target there on the map, but not shown, is it off the map, or does it simply not exist in your game?

I think this is a question for which it will be hard to get a definitive answer, unless it comes from Firaxis itself...

I had one, and carpet searched the area. Twice. No city.

I wrote to GIJoe a few days ago - he said he had never found one without an "X"

I said I have never tried to find one without an X, hehe. Big difference. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Every location I have found was with a map that had an X. I am extremely busy with a new game, so unfortunately I have had to decline several requests to look at maps in the last couple of weeks. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say; the item or location you are looking for does not exist on a map without an X. I type this because I know without a doubt on every map with an X you can find the location. However, since this game was released I have never ever read one post, here or elsewhere, where someone found the location on a map without an X.

Did ye read dis feller's post, GIJoe? He had 127 points an' posted his 'X'-less map: <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/sutra93344.php&highlight=#93344" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/sutra93344.ph...ighlight=#93344</a>, but apparently ne'er found de lost city! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Fred Bob had one map fer Montalban's hideout dat 'twas way outta whack! It sayed NW o' Gran Granada but de location turmed mo' like WNW! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> Fer an added twist, thar were extra landmarks peppered in among dem on de map makin' navigation tricky! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Took 2 or 3 tries testin' different assumptions about de visble landmarks befer Fred Bob found de fort! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Weird thang be it seemed as though Fred Bob had already passed through some o' de territory whar de fort ended up bein'! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" />

I have found that - without an X - you are on a hiding to nothing.

What I have taken to doing is using the battle or arrival save to replay that section of the game (even if it means trying to take Monty AGAIN!) if the quarter of map I get initially doesn't either have an "X" on it, or fragments of the writing that is near the X saying what it is (showing that there is an "X" on it).

Given that the game determines where the thing is when you get the first section of map, you are assured to have an "X" that way, but don't get an unfair advantage seeing multiple quarters and being able to piece them together!

Certainly, most of the time the bit of map I get initially has an "X" on it, or writing to show where the X might be, but after spending fruitless weeks searching and wasting a game when I was being very successful, I am a touch paranoid!

I've used it once - the second try, the daughter gave me a quarter of a completely different map, but this time with an "X" in it.

I.ve not yet run into a map widout an X in it,sounds like its inevitable that its come'n,does this happen latter in de game ur early? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Also, does there appear to be a particular level that it occurs more often on? For example, Rogue, Swashbucker, etc etc..?

I have found, a treasure, even with only 3 pieces of the map, and the piece with the red X was not there. Founded after some walking in a crescent spiral path around the place I calculated it may be. Had luck and bagged 4000 gold .

Aye, Paul! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Sometimes Fred Bob be luckin' out also an' be makin' a good guess whar dat aunt/uncle/grandpa/treasure/lost city be widout actually havin' de piece map wid de "x"! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Paul, in that case, I would suspect that if you had got the 4th piece, it would have had the X there. I have seen maps where there is no X, even with 4 pieces (even with 5 "pieces", actually!)

On base level (Apprentice) I get Treasure Maps whole, never in pieces (and always with an "X"); the other kinds come in pieces. I've also found the prize without whole maps pretty easily - these are GOOD maps, especially for randomized rendering on the fly - but I'll bet the piece with the prize would have had an "X" on it. However, the tavern dialogue still refers to pieces (plural). Ahoy Cap.n Darius -tell me that 5th piece was a joke?!? Next you'll be tellin' of maps in pieces o' eight!
