Isla de Muerte

Captain Thom

Landlubber
Quick question, "compass3", if you use the mod to get it, allows you to go to Isla de Muerte, where is this island and how do you get there. I assumed it was in that large center area that says uncharted, and in fact, when I sail there I get a 'land ho!', but going back to the sea there is no island? I know this mod is not ready yet, but I would still like to see how it's coming. Can anyone help?

Cap Thom

that island in the center has a very small locator. you need to be directly under the flag to visit the island, but you can't land on it. it's deserted as well. it's just a defensive position.

i can't answer your question about the compass though. i'd actually like to know how it works myself.

the compass just appears in the quest item section, apparently it's only function at the moment is to enable the isaland to show up. It is suppost to allow you to land on the island, but I have not had a chance to check that yet.

If you have got the compass, you can go to Isla de Muerte. It should appear in the F2 > Map interface and the island itself is between Cuba and Grand Cayman, if I recall correctly.

lol I have trouble finding compass 2 most of the time. still haven't gotten it on the character I'm using right now. same with sextant and chonometer to a point that I actually made it so that you can see yourself on the map without em. it's kinda silly really that they're so rare. I can see them being expensive, but these things weren't rare by a long shot, even hwen they cast Captain Bligh adrift with his loyal crewmen when they mutinyed on the bounty the gave him a sextant, if it was exceptionally rare or valuable they wouldn't have. I've looked into the files about em to try to tweak em so that they're common like at nearly every shop but can't figure out what variable I need to tweak

that's a pretty good point. the problem is that you might be able to buy it really soon that way. maybe it should become common at a certain level. that is possible to do. you need to change the item level and make it common by changing that mysterious variable.

I don't see it being too much a problem buying em early. that's pretty standard equipment it's like food and water a ship need em. even in the beginning when yer shipwrecked, you should still have a sextant and compass and such handy. most ships carried several just in case.

it's interesting to know btw, speaking of Bligh, ya know that guy without a map, inside that lil life boat, with a sextant, a compass and a pocket watch, and just the memory of where islands were, was able to perform some incredible feets of navigation to bring his men back home, some of hte areas he navigated through some strait or another, are pretty good feats of navigation on good circumstances with a ship and charts, and he pulled em off in that lil boat. That guy was a master seaman.

in this case, we are not talking about it being logical that you have those instruments at the start. if they where, then there would be no point of having them in the game at all. you are supposed to be unable to determine your position on the map at first.

ah okies, except when ye are marooned on one of those islands that has a neast lil old map of it show up during the loading screen or when ya save initially and it gives you the island yer on <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> you shouldn't be able to get your position till ya find yer ship again and then have access to that equipment.

but then it would be useless to be able to buy them in stores. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> anyway, i think it's fine as it is, although it may not be entirely logical.

The island DOES appear on the worldmap. It shows up as a small island with a palm tree, like the ones showing a beach on the other islands. It does not show up as a "normal" island. But you can sail there just fine. As long as you have the compass, that is... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

If you use <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/others/pb_modifications.zip" target="_blank">PB Modifications</a>, getting to Isla de Muerte is made much easier, because you can now get compass3 ingame as well: Go to the Tortuga tavern and talk to Mr. Gibbs who can be found there. He will give you the compass. You can also hire him as boatswain if you like.

The rarity and price settings for most of the new items, including the compasses, books and clocks are not balanced at all yet (remember: it IS still an Alpha version). If you find that they are too rare or too common, open up PROGRAM\ITEMS\initItems.c and change the values in that file. It is recommended you get Notepad++ from the Modding Tools page on my site. If you use that program to open the codefile, all columns will be lined up properly, making the file much more easy to edit. Be sure to tell me when you come up with better values than the current ones.

Morgan is right: If you have these items by default, there's no point in having them in the game at all. The idea with these items is to make you have to pay to gain some of the navigational features in the game. For example, needing a compass for the on-screen display and needing a chronometer and sextant to be able to see your own ship on the map interface. If you do not like this, you can turn off the item requirements using the following variables in BuildSettings.h: DISPLAY_SEA_TIME, DISPLAY_BATTLEINTERFACE, DISPLAY_MAP_POSITION.

uh oh added the pb mods and now the game won't open at all XD

edit: in process of reinstalling game =) fortunately I remembered to take out my save file before deleting it.
okies everything is fixed, don't want to be doing that again >.> so now, back to modding the values for those items. is it the higher the number the more common they are or higher the number and the more rare they are?

my guess is, is that they should be as common as rum and water in any store as it was as vital to a ship's navigation as a rudder, however, adding an additional zero or something to the price of em may be in order. then yer kinda forced to kinda operate out of hte waters you wrecked in till ya got enough to get the equipment. perhaps adding another zero would be too much but obviously make htem more expensive. what are your thoughts?

8,000 for the chronometer, 10,000 for the sextant 2,000 for the cheaper compass and 8,000 for the more expensive one.

how about 15000, 25000, 5000 (or 3000, depending on how much money most players have at the start of the game. we do have to take new players into account), 15000, in that order?
