Is gaining experience built into this game?

Raion

Landlubber
If you go and play, and do something many times, is experience built in, with whatever was the game elements?

Say with swordfighting, you make more correct moves, do you get faster, or do you have to buy the special items only?
Does your crew get better fighting, from experience if kept together longer, say in ship battles, or do you have to get the specialists to help only?

I would think that taking on bigger garrisons from a city or something with gaining experience that you could use less men (not to many less) and still win the battle for the city?

Persay, with the like gaining experience for your crew, or is it only a morale booster or whatever?

I would hope that I do not have to depend on special items only in this game for swordfighting, persay, except where pistols and all that helps a little (start in a different position when starting the swordfight, and only gain that way in the game from using the pistols)??

Just overall experience also dealing with the aging and all of that (I mean that aging interferes with the gaining experience)?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> In short words this game has nothing to do with level charecter by fighting more or gaining exp .

You can gain experience with player skill, but not character skill. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Are you sure that there is not a way of boosting the morale of your crew except by just dividing the plunder? (plus the special items)

The only reason I am asking, is that it seems in previous versions (which I have not played in a great while) that there were formulas for all of that, with the moral and aging and health as factors?

I really at this time, think that this game is not that simple, but I am only asking if players have noticed anything about that in this game?
(that those factors are programmed into this game, making it live up to that Hall of Fame computer game, I played many years ago?)

(it is built into Civilization games in a manner of your Armed Forces).

You can get more gold, reduce the size of your crew, get certain special items or particular specialist crewmen. All of these will help some with crew morale.

I played the Gold Version and dont know any formulas.
Morale primary depends on gold per pirate. Health e.g.
depends on number of hits you get in a fight, how will you
count ? It'll be very hard to figure out how it works.

I for myself would like to know the trigger for getting
a special item from a govs daughter. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I have seen ZERO evidence of increasing skills due to, "points" or some such. In additon I never saw it in the original either.

IMHO there is NO modifiers built into the game from gaining experience. You simply get better from ITEMS, skill choices at start, or you get worse from age/heath.

>>(it is built into Civilization games in a manner of your Armed Forces).<<

In the Civ games there is no reason you would have to get rid or your armed forces, i.e. you do not have to constantly keep paying them, you do not have to keep thier morale high, they will not mutiny, etc etc. In short they are persistant and only "die" when they are killed in combat or you disband them. We are not even talking apples and oranges here, you are comparing horses and airplanes. While both are a mode of transportation they really have very little in common.

SMP and The Civ games are Different. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Conceptually and factually.

<span style='color:darkred'>TIPA</span>- A great dance sequence will usually yield you an item from the Gov's daughter. I have also been offered these items from the mysterious traveller, for a price of course, from time to time.

Well, consider this - every time you are promoted, you gain a new "skill" such as easier recruitment, more goods in port, &tc...

There's another indirect way of getting free items from daughters. If you don't quite dance well enough to get one from her directly, often she will tell you of a fugitive wanted by her country, where he's hiding and the reward for capturing him. If you go find him and defeat him, he will usually bribe you with a free item to let him go, I've picked up a lot of them this way. And the best part is, you still get to keep the reward money even if you take the bribe.

Completely OT, but yes you do. You pay for the maintenance of your troops every single turn (at least in Civ2&3) depending on your form of government.

Perhaps we'll see more character development in Pirates! 2 when Sid makes it, but for the moment our character has standard skills that can only deteriorate (or be enhanced with proper items).

Yes, I just checked and you're right, if you take the item you don't get the reward, you have to return him which makes more sense anyway... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

Well, I must be dreaming. I saw my character do some new moves after about 3 years in the gaming time, and I thought that you could play longer, if you got the special items, and did better in the game. (This if from other players who have not retired until they were older than the 20 year span. One I think played until he was 49 or so years old).

Well, I was thinking that is the way that they did that, but then, it is hard to tell, if it is in there. Guess, I be dreaming then.

I am ---- Captain Jean Luc Picard --- of the Frigate Class sailing vessel -- the NGC 1701E Enterprise. We have come back in time to pick up a copy of the grandmaster, grandaddy Sid Meier's Game of Pirate. We plan to use it for training and fun purposes with our holodeck. It is unfortunate that the only holodeck you have is your computer monitor. We will not stop your incursion into the Caribbean New World Realm, but realize that we intend also to play this game after reprogramming our holodeck in a more splendid manner.

Picard out!

Raion I played a game until I was almost 70 once.. It did not get any easier. You can just imagine the number of battles I fought over that long a time. If you gained experience I should have been a fencing master by then. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Not sure what OT means, but you do have a point, I guess I should have worded it differently. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

OT = OffTopic <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Topic :

Those special fencing moves are just special moves you can do
when fencing "in range" of some objects (rope, bucket...) .
No experienced skill. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Ahh, Danke.. Although I do not think its off topic as the original poster of this thread brought it up in one of his posts. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> After all he did start the thread. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Okay, maybe instead of saying 'gaining experience' then I was referring to longevity as in prolonging how long the player can play.
I would have to look back at Gamespot's forum for the game to see if health and other issues, more or less force one to retire. The game does not make one retire, but it does make the player, in the playing swordfight sense, less able to continue on with getting crew to stay with you and being able to continue on in the game.

70 is quite old for this game of Pirates!

Well, health issues most certainly affect how your character can play - your swordfighting skill (reaction time) deteriorates as time goes by, and it's dependent upon how much injury you might have had throughout your career - so it's tied into how many swordfights you've had - and how many were successful (or not).

I think to play this game, people who have played this game before and do not need to "learn" everything all over again, should start at Swashbuckler and as time goes by and you are less able to react, you should divide the plunder and move a step DOWN in your difficulty level. THAT should keep you in the game longer, I would think! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Actually the game does make you retire IF you divide the plunder. At a certain point your health is so bad you will be unable to continue after you DP. You have no chioce the game will retire you. So, once you have reached that health status you can never DP if you want to continue.

NOTE: Once I reached late 50's I only sailed around peacefully trading and trying to build up all the new English towns I has established. Did ZERO fighting.
