Is anyone still playing this game?

Man, I havent touched it sine a week after it came out. I was really looking forward to this one too. I am a little disapointed with it. OH well, are there any mods out there to make the game better?

I still play the game everygame, set different goals each game. One game I may try to destroy all the Spanish and install English Governors in all thier towns. Another game I may take it upon myself to see every English town prospers through massive trade with each other. And yet another, I will attack any and all shipping only using Pirate Havens, Settlements or Indian Villages for trade/repair.

And there are still so many more things I can do beyond just gathering "points" to satisfy the game gauge.

I anticipate being pleased with this for a long time yet..

Yep, started another career today. I'll play it till it's over (probably take about 3 evenings depending on time at the gym) and then take about 10 days off. Plays just like the old one and if I had a dime for all the hours I spent playing the original... I'd be a rich pirate!

You're kidding, right?? There are literally hundreds of differant ways to vary the gameplay for replayability. Try Swashbukler in 1600, with no saves, for instance. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

I can't remember the last time I've been so hooked on a game, going on a month of solid play, been years since that's happened to me. It even messed up my Christmas shopping schedule.

Well, I finished my latest career a couple of days ago and am taking a break from the game. I did put alot of time into the game though and went through quite a few careers. I have a good excuse for stopping though because I reinstalled POTC and downloaded Build 12. Been enjoying that immensely.

SMP is still installed on my HD though and I will surely return once more to it's addictive ways soon.

<b>galeninjapan, </b>what disappointed you about the game? If it was too easy, try a different starting level. I think perhaps the best way to go with this game is to start at Swashbuckler and as you gather fame and fortune, when you find your reaction timing on duels getting slow, divide the plunder with just a little money and go "down" a level to a lesser difficulty. Then you can prolong your career!

There are so many different ways to create a challenge in this game, that if you get tired you can step away from it for a bit and go back later for a fresh look... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I don´t think SMP´s the kind of game to play intensly over a long period of time. You do some careers, go up in difficulty, but after a while you´ll give it a rest. It was the same for me ith pirates! Gold, but, just as that one, after a time you´ll dig it back up and start all over again. It´s just not out long enough for that, but it IS a `long-time` investment, in my opinion at least.

Yeah, I have found that after every career I play, the break between the time I finish that career and start a new one seems to grow a bit (which is EXACTLY how the original was and CIV). I'm up to about a week or 10 days between doses now, but over time that will increase. The game will be on my hard drive for years though - no doubt.

The only thing i can say is: "I love this game!" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Heh... I invited a friend over - he has just moved here and has not yet unpacked (he is attending an academy here, but hasn't found an apartment yet) - so he does not have his computer available. I sat him down in front of my computer and showed him SMP and he proceeded to play for about six hours straight, laughing and having lots of fun! Since he was not very good at dancing, I did the dances for him, gave him tips, and all that... It's been fun playing in a duet (so to speak) like this - and he plans to go out and buy this game as soon as he gets settled into an apartment and can unpack! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I ain't even had time to finish a career yet. Going to Gamespot and answering questions and anything, has taken time away from the game.

Gees! I only get to play a game a couple hours a day anyway, so find something to do.

Try some craziness in the game, and see how you do. Take your original crew and go up to a big City, and Attack it.

Have some fun!

What is this romance bit, it's Pirates! not some romance game?

I have to say when i first installed it i was somewhat disappointed. I am the proud owner of the original C64 boxed version of this game which I played on and off till about 1996 (basically til it became too much of a pain to dig out and dust off the 64 to play it).

however after playing it once i was hooked again. there are a few niggles i would have liked back in like sea vs land gunfights, and i think the new packaging/manual is not as good as the original (but thats a sad relflection on the state of uk packaging these days). but the extras make up for it. i went from loathing the dancing to loving it, and the tactical movement in the land battles is much better than the original.I would however have liked to see the sea conditions change in combat like seadogs.

the manner of playing this for me will undoubtedly be like the original. that is blitz it for 2 weeks then probably not play it for 6 months, then u catch the end of a film like "sea hawks" or "cutthroat island" on tv and away we go again.

I watched Captain Blood on Monday. Pretty good for a seventy year- old movie <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
I was just a bit disappointed that the battles of Maracaiboand Cartagena weren´t in the movie. Otherwise, it´s worth watching, if you can lay your hands on it.

Rebel everything and try and get a max Fame of 84. No marraige or allying yourself to a nation. Also you can only sell goods in Havens not even settlements. Also you gotta play Swashbuckler and also start off in Spain in the 1660's.

If you think thats easy tell me how its done cause my problem is selling goods :p. Thinking of strategies besides relying on allying with a port temporarily, I want everyone in the Carribean to fear me :p.

Well, I tried a new career on swashbuckler and got spanked last night. Started with a sloop in Port Royale in 1660. Boarded a trade galleon and got beat off of it in the swordfight. Once I got out of jail, I sunk a trade galleon while trying to wack all it's crew. Then went after a smuggler sloop and took it (my first prize!) and quickly took another trade galleon. Limped back to port with more damage than I had money to fix and an unhappy crew. Upon departure, 10 crew deserted and I headed towards Tortuga. Attacked a merchantman and got beat again and put in jail. I turned it off in a fit of frustration - I need fencing lessons... BADLY!

I tried that after my first career and couldn't stand it.
Completed another career on rogue, and tried swashy again. No chance.

Then I cheated me a bit money so i could held more crewmen at the beginning. With that i could stand some fights and after getting a few Items
I could win the fights nearly as on rogue. It's doable for me, so now
I'll try to survive the first years without cheating.

Been playing it off and on the last few weeks. Right now I'm waiting for the "Master Trainer" that restores the 1560's, silver train, rum, tobacco etc that should never have been taken out of the game....

Yes, I was disappointed in this game, I mean after the first day I did everything! Sure I could play "`no-saves`" or try to knock out all the governors, but why? Its just fruitless. I haven't touched the game since a week after I bought it. Not only that, but I feel that it isn't anything I havn't seen before. I mean Sid only added a handful of things from the original.

I guess I was expecting a definitive pirate PC game. This isn't it.
