Interview with seaward.ru on upcoming "Corsairs: City of Abandoned Ships"

Peter Willemoes

Corsair
Storm Modder
There is an exclusive interview from December 17th 2007 up on RPGVault including 5 new screenshots as a variation to the 8 bad quality SS thats floating around everywhere. <a href="http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/841/841808p1.html" target="_blank">Read</a> and enjoy! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

VERY interesting interview. Certainly makes me more interested in City of Abandoned Ships than I ever was in Age of Pirates. It seems that they really have something worthwhile in the works there. If we could port most (some?) of our stuff to that game, I do believe it could yield some amazing results.

They seem to have a fair good approach to the term "pirate game".
"At first sight, the closest similar game seems to be Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, but where the gameplay is concerned, we'd rather compare it to Sea Dogs." I´ll bet he knows, what kind of stuff we want to hear!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

According to that interview, the game should have:
<ul><li>6000 km2 of playing ground (thats big!!?)</li><li>The 4 nations England, France, Spain, Holland and additionally Native Indians and Pirates, of course! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /></li><li>Up to 5 ships in the players´ squadron</li><li>Up to 5 officers with the player</li><li>3 different starting choices for a career (merchant, adventurer, pirate)</li><li>Open ended gameplay</li><li>Some kind of "quest-generator" making each quest different from the last time you played it</li><li>Quests including real pirates like Henry Morgan</li><li>Quests below the ocean(?!)</li><li>Quest involving the player in the attack of Panama with Henry Morgan</li><li>An actual city made of abandoned ships (ship-cemetary) out in the middle of the sea</li><li>Every skill gets its own development path - a hardcore merchant will eventually block his own ability to board ships </li><li>Fencing in 3 different ways: rapier (light), cavalry sword (medium), and swords, and axes (heavy)</li><li>Aztech warriors, living skeletons and gigantic crabs are among the enemies</li></ul>
Sure a long list of jaw-droppers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Among the downsides must be the fact, that there is no multiplayer. Also, seabattles seems pretty standard along with the treasure hunting (buy half a map from this guy, go to that guy for the rest of the map). Also, the images are not impressing me that much in a graphical perspective.

But thats just me, I look forward to more peoples comments.

Good summary, Peter! There's some really good stuff in there, by the sounds of it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

As for your small downsides:
No multiplayer? Don't care. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
Sea Battles? We can always add exploding cannons, surrendering and firedrills later. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />
Treasure Hunting? We're not doing much better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
Graphics? Better than PotC! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

I am HUGELY looking forward to this game. Hugely. I even have a Russian copy of it, although I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing since everything is in, well, Russian. :p I hope you decide to make a Build Mod for this game, Pieter.

I am hoping and expecting City of Abandoned Ships to have all the content we missed with previous expansions, add-on content, and patches that Akella and Seaward released for Pirates of the Caribbean (Corsairs 2) and Age of Pirates (Corsairs 3), as well as content and features from the game we didn't even get (City of Abandoned Ships is actually a direct sequel to that game). They only gave us the bare minimum, and never released those expansion packs and extra free content for English-based users, nor that other game, so we missed out on a lot.

I'm pretty sure City of Abandoned Ships is going to have everything we missed out on, though. I really hope it comes out soon, and that the date on Akella's site is correct (Q1, 2008). The game is already released in Russia, after all, so all they have to do is translate. And if you start a Build Mod for this game, Pieter, we'd have the most complete experience ever. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I really dont care about the multiplayer either, Pieter. Its just that many folks in the forums seems to want MP.

Both in the letter from Zaitsev and in the interview, it is said that the Sea Legend is Back-team managed to port their mod over to AoP after its release. That means, those folks have some experience in porting. Not bad for us! Also, they have participated in the work of upgrading the graphics engine, implying they have the source code for at least some versions of the Storm engine. Dont know if we have the skills to use it, though..

I said it before and I say it again: Cooperating with the Russians on their City of Abandoned Ships game has the potential of becoming the best pirate game ever. If they manage to make the actual game as good as it sounds in the interview, it just might be the best unmodded pirate game so far. When we can add our mods, it could become truly something amazing. In theory it can be done; the challenge is actually doing it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Since you're in contact with the developers, you should give us some information on the translation progress and a good date for release. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Maybe do your own little interview for the Pirates Ahoy! crowd.

PeterWillemoes has the contact with Akella. So far we've only sent them three e-mails. I have no inside information. At least not yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

Hehe so their doing something good at all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> Coool! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

I don't give a s*** about multiplayer either. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Multiplayer would only be a sea battle against another person like in AoP, not actual MMORPG gameplay. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Which site? This site? We haven't personally heard from the admins in ages, but the domain was updated anyway, so they can't have forgotten about us completely. The main page hasn't been updated for a while, but modding for PotC is as active as it ever was. More or less... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />
