How to mod?

You use an SDK (Software Development Kit).
At first it isn't easy as you have to learn how to use it but once you do then it's easy.
ANd the game isn't out yet so you can't mod it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

download SDK at:
<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=`9B3A2CA6-3647`-`4070-9F41`-A333C6B9181D&displaylang=en" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en</a>

does anyone know where to find a good tuturial?

I search but I cant find anything good...

That isn't the kind of SDK that I meant.
Game developers release them for their games so search for details on a game you have to see if they have an SDK.

DJ1, if you are interested in learning how to mod for PotC, check out the PotC Modding section of this forum - there are links to tools, tutorials, and lots of people you can ask questions of, also examples of some of the modder's works in progress (or finished!).

<a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/forum12.php" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/forum12.php</a>

Now as for Pirates!, there will be some modding you can do for yourself (such as making your own "skin" for your character or customizing your sails) - and I'm sure there will be some kind of tool for the game so you can do so...

But like I said, check out the PotC modding forum if you want to see some of the stuff some of our members have been doing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Small note of warning, tho... Read my sig, and see the smiley at the end. It's called "Modding"... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Has anyone checked yet to see what can be done in terms of modding SMP, yet? C'mon, I know about of you are computer geeks and programmers.... I've heard it in stories. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Well, ye start by a lookin' fer `text-based` files... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I don't have my copy yet ... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I'd be looking if I did.

Well ive opened up a few of the .dds textures and they look pretty straight forward, so at least graphical mods are able

Changing the title screens and that are all pretty simple

Ill keep playing around for something a little meaty

files i used for viewing the dds files
<a href="http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm</a>

called dxtbmpx.exe

Ill be making a list for all of this with updated links and so on, but for the moment i found a site that has alot of the software sources from morrowind so until i can get some time go

<a href="http://www.`morrowind-mod`.com/Modders%20Resources%20Free%20Texture%20Sites%20&%20Image%20Programs.htm" target="_blank">http://www.`morrowind-mod`.com/Mod...%20Programs.htm</a>

Oh that's great, thanks, KEITH!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Problem is that mods for Pirates are those fpk files, which are compressed archives of scripts and graphics, etc. I've been looking all day and can't find anywhere online that tells me how to extract/open them, then repack 'em! Until we can do this, or unless we get the sdk, we're sunk.
I LOVE the game, but would love it even more if I could play as one of those ugly sea dogs....and put tobacco back in.

funny i just did a search and on the beta there are none of those files, are they on the cd or HD?

HD, Keith. To be precise: on the LE DVD, among the extras you can add to the game besides additional sails and flags is a "mod" file that adds some extra characters to taverns. This file just gets dumped in your Custom folder and thus activates this mod.
In the Assets folder on the HD there are also about 12 FPK files, ranging from 100megs to 8 megs in size, and I presume they contain packed scripts, graphics and game data.
Do you have any contacts at Atari/Firaxis who may be willing to share some info on this?

well, in the assests folder that i have they are all unpacked <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

so i wonder what Jeff/Barry would have to say about transferring them around <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yeah but they would still have to be repacked in to fpk files...which I think can be done...
Would you mind checking into the possibility of "sharing" the resources? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />
