Historical Flags Mod

Davos Seaworth

Landlubber
I finally managed to change not only the ship flags but also the town flags of the four colonial powers. The French and the Spanish now have different flags for naval vessels and towns.

The French

The English

<img src="http://mitglied.lycos.de/antares78/SMP/english.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The Spanish

<img src="http://mitglied.lycos.de/antares78/SMP/spanish.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The Dutch

Download the mod <a href="http://mitglied.lycos.de/antares78/SMP/historical_flags_mod_1.0.zip" target="_blank">here</a> (Right Click -> Save target to...)

Unfortunately I´m lacking the required skills to change the icons in the map screen and the flags under international relations in the status screen (I´m in no way a graphic designer). I fear that this must do someone else who is more experienced in modding if it is desired.

Looks kick ass. Definitely gonna give this one a go. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

If you talking about moding I dont know but you can find out if you scroll on botom of Moding forum , there is a topic How to mod?, you can get some pointers in that topic.EDIT: some pointers

If you asking how to use this particular mod ( flags) , yust download it from internet and extract all content in the same place your game is instaled (custom folder to be precise). ( you have readme.txt in mod , so read it .It will help you) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

@Cpt Shadow

This is the modern flag of Spain. In the 17th century the Spanish (and all other nations) used flags that resembled the ones I used in this mod. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> By the way, the flags used in build 11 for PotC were the same models if I recall correctly.

The Union Jack didn't exist during the 17th century....the red cross that Sid used in the game is period correct.
Nice work though!

It <a href="http://www.fotw.us/flags/`gb-hist`.html#hist" target="_blank">did</a> exist. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> But you may be right in that it wasn´t used on naval vessels in the 17th century. Well, you can of course keep the original design for the english flag. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Ok, you got me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Well you're right that it DID exist, but as the page states:
"It is also interesting to note that the new flag was not universally popular nor accepted. The English were not overly pleased at the obscuring of the white field of the St George's flag. The Scots, with more justification, were upset at the fact that the red cross was laid over the white."
Thus the St. George cross continued in use until into the 18th century.

Here is my comprehensive flag pack. There is one zip file for the entire set which corrects every national flag in the game I believe.

My flag pack includes all ship flags, town flags, log book flags, map flags, and war/treaty flags, etc. They are a little darker and I think more realistically colored than Davos' ship and town flags. I also have since changed the English flags from the 1606 Union Jack as Davos did (based on my accidental `mis-information` to him) to the Red Ensign for the ships and left the St. Georges Cross flag unmodified for towns and state flags.

I also used the French merchant shipping flag in this pack as the white flag with `fleur-de`-lis was hard to see in my opinion. Also, my town flag for the French uses a blue flag with three large `fleur-de`-lis adopted by Charles V.

All flags should be the ones used in the Pirates! era. If anyone knows comprehensively of any errors in this flag pack, please bring them to my attention.

If you have any questions of problems, let me know. And as always, I give Davos credit for bringing to my attention the idea of historical flags in the first place and for showing me that it was possible to mod the `non-ship` flags in the game, and to Rahly without his FPK packer/unpacker all this would have been a pipe dream.

Beautifull!

I wasnt too worried about any of sid's flags except the dutch (that was UGLY!) and didnt think they would be much improved upon, but you proved me wrong. These you did here are wonderfull, I love the darker colors. They really add alot to it.

@Fab: What about taking the Spanish flag from Pirates! Gold? Looks way more familiar on my victims <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />
By the way, where´d you get that avatar picture of yours from? I´m looking for the character pics (the ones shown while the starting tale is told) from Pirates! Gold, but I haven´t managed to find them.

As for the Pirates! Gold Spanish flag, that was really the flag of Leon and Castille, not Spain, and would have gone out of use in the 16th century I believe. Though to be honest, the flag I have now as the Spanish town flag isn't right either (that was a naval flag also). I wish someone could find out what flag would have flown over a Spanish town in the 17th century. I'd add that flag to the flag pack in a heartbeat.

As for my little town information guy avatar, it's buried in the fpk files that came on the Pirates! CD. They're just not used by the game. There's lots of stuff in there, from picture of big purple ape costumes to a picture of a little white kitten and stacks of images from Pirates! Gold like all the daughters, ships, and so on.

Hey fab, check this out.

Well, Officerpuppy, I think you may have finally persuaded me as to what the proper "Spanish" Flag should be.

`flag_1520-1785`.jpg

`burgubdy-cross`.JPG

I was hesitant to use that flag as on the Flags of the World page it is listed as an Ensign or a Jack (naval flag, not for use on land), not to mention its use by infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers, and so on. It seemed like a military flag more than a state flag.

But then over at the State of Georgia site it says of the above flag, "In addition to the royal banner, Spain had many other flags, including this one first adopted in the 1520s. . . . The saltire design, known as the Cross of Burgundy, was a symbol of Philip I, Duke of Burgundy and father of Charles I, who became Spain's king in 1516. Variants of the Burgundy cross flag . . . became widely used by the Spanish military on both land and sea. This is the principal flag that flew over Spain's colonial empire in the New World until 1785."

It was that last statement that did it for me. I mean, if you consider the cities in Pirates! as military outposts (which, compared to European cities would certainly have been the case), not to mention Spain's presence in the New World was characterized by military might and brutality more than a willingness for peaceful trade, it seems like a military flag might have been what fluttered over the cities represented in the game.

Now then, which version do you think? A realistic looking flag that appears like trimmed logs, or the version as appears above?

I vote for the ones above <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I would prefer the one below with the darker red color of the flag above. I like the shape of the logs, although you would hardly notice the difference ingame, I guess.

`es-borg`.gif

Well, I fixed up the flagpack to include the St. Anthony's cross as the Spanish town flag in the game. Sorry, Davos, I used the plain saltire as seen in the above images instead of the one that is "natural". The readme has an update in it, with special thanks to Officerpuppy, as well as today's date at the bottom so you know you got the right one. It's ready for download now.
