I am currently reading the book Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life among the Pirates -- by David Cordingly. I highly recommend it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

I have read "Under the Black Flag" by Cordingly; it's excellent! Right now I'm into another book by him: "Women Sailors and Sailors Women"...

"`Yo-ho`-ho `Puzzle-Pirates`" you also came accross is a cute 2D online game with a trial version to play. It's pretty challenging -- One day I find myself addict to the `Tetris-like` `sword-fighting` feature they have.

Just reading the Cordingley book now and it is excellent for clearing up a lot of the less accurate mythology and fantasy that has grown around pirates, privateers and buccaneers. Covers just about every aspect of a pirates life and pirate actions around the world with some useful appendixes at the back which list the main pirate actions and the fate of pirate crews and ships. Well worth the read <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

It is a very scholarly read, Grimm... Good reference book. He IS (presumably) the world's authority on pirate history, at least the ENGLISH authority. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah, but considering what books we _don´t_ have - the ones you need most when doing a paper or thesis - I was surprised we actually have that one. Not that I´m complaining <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Ah... Go figure. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

They've actually worked up a pretty good system here in Los Angeles, for the Library. There are branches all over - and you can look up a book online, find out if it's at your branch, and if it's not, you can request it. They'll send you an email when it gets to your branch, and you can then go get it and check it out. When you're finished with it, doesn't matter where you are in L.A. you can drop it off at the nearest branch and it'll go back to it's home branch.

LOVE the online lookup, it's pretty darned handy! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

That´s a good system, we´ve got something similar with university libraries all over Germany. If you need a book you order it online, and when it arrives, you get notified. Wouldn´t have been able to finish my Master Thesis without that.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> No, definitely not, although, it´s about banking...I´m a BA student, with financial management and controlling (that´s what we call it in Germany, right now I´m not sure what that´s in the Anglo- American context) as my mayors.

Sounds like what we call a business studies degree over here in the UK - maybe there will be a module on the influence of treasure in foreign policy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Well, the better you are at business, the better you will be able to command your fleet! I mean, look at Cheng I Sao! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
