General questions about gameplay

Hey guys, first post.

Great game, but I got the game without the manual, so it's a bit of a learning curve. I'd just like to know about the yellow and white stars next to the officers' pictures (when on land) and next to the ships in your fleet (when at sea). What do those mean?

The ship stars are the class of the ship. Less stars = stronger ships.
The officer stars are the number of shots they have. When the stars are golden = available (loaded) shot; when the stars are grey = non-available (unloaded) shot.
