Game Speed

Civrules

Landlubber
As pointed out in some other posts, I think that the game is just too fast. Too fast to experience sailing from island to island. The clouds and weather and everything just moves so fast that you get everything, but then, you get it for a few seconds. I don’t think that at this speed the game will be very enjoyable. But I do hope that the developers read our comments and slow it down a bit.

Is the speed itself a concern to you?

The speed is a very big concern to me.

It didn't bother me much at first because I knew the original Pirates! was also `fast-paced`. Based on the vids it's hard to say --- it may be the same pace. But man, it sure looks like that ship is hopping from island to island in mere seconds. Close islands? Sure. After all I remember sailing from mainland Hispaniola to Tortuga so fast that I missed the port several times and my party got off the ship. I had to load them back on and try again. That was ridiculously fast but the islands in real life are extremely close (probably close enough to see one from the other on a high peak and clear day).

That said, the land masses in the videos don't appear to be Tortuga and Hispaniola. I thought one looked like the western coast of either Cuba or Jamaica and the ship just sped along the shoreline at hyperspeeds. I read a preview which said speed will pass at roughly one day per second. That's a little too fast. Part of the fun of being a pirate is the hunt itself. How quickly, I wonder, do you encounter other ships? If it's too quick then the game might take on an arcadish feel. A good pace, in my opinion (my God I seem to be an `Akella-fan` today) would be roughly that seen in POTC.

IMO.

Let's really hope they change this, and at this speed, IMO, you would be able to find and sink ships in mere minutes. NO FUN! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" /> I think they took the "fast paced" concept a little too far. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />

Humm, look again at the “Gameplay Footage 1” and notice that the game does indeed switch to a different speed when the ring sound and the red words appear on the enemy ship…

I agree....

I liked Pirates really much cause you sailed rather slow..... sailing was the part I enjoyed most in the original Pirates. I hoipe there are possabilities to choose speed just as in many other games i P2004! .

I think that the videos we have seen so far have been to much `action-packed`.....

Some people at Cutlass Isle think that they could have increased the speed to pack more info in the video and that game developers often do that.

here's a link (the last few posts):

<a href="http://www.cutlassisle.com/" target="_blank">http://www.cutlassisle.com/</a>

Maybe they are right... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

[EDIT] The link does not change as you change the forums at their site... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> So, I'll just quote:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Ok... I have to say that video clips are always going to look quicker than what normal gameplay is.. They normally speed it up to try and fit all they want you to see in the short amount of time. This way to keep the file under a certain size limit for the `dial-up` people. Just a thought... kinda like don't judge a book by its cover <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Just had to say it<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

And...

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Good point PF. They do often speed things up a little to cram more content into the same megabytes. Well, who knows... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Playing “Quicker” Games

Since there are no real missions to choose from (because the governor decides what he wants you to do for him), doesn’t this mean that the game itself has to move faster?
I also noticed that on one of the screenshots, a ship had a way longer trail than on the other screenshots I saw (a longer trail would mean, I assume, that the game is a bit slower). I am not certain but I believe that you are allowed to change the speed of the game, which would, if true, make for awesome flexibility. Firaxis has also included a feature in Civ III that allows you to change the number of turns in a game (making for quicker or longer games), but whether this reflects on Pirates! or not is unknown.

Here’s the screenshot I was referring to:

Still really worried about the speed..

Sailing is (fo me) the most exciting part of Pirates..

so I hope you are right civrules.

how do you know it's fast???

I havent seen any videos of sailing...just fighting, dancing and sneaking in to town..

please give me a link cause the sailing is what I really wanna see...

AWESOME!

donwloaded it from Gamespot cause didnt find it on the official one...

I dont think the sailing goes that fast but the sailing on the trailer is really zoomed in so it looks faster than it is I believe.. However I would prefer if it went in 50% of that speed or maybe even slower.

I have to agree that the game speed is too fast. I don't like the fact that you will finish your career in only about five hours of gameplay. I would be happier if it was at least twice that. Five hours is not enough time to enjoy your successes or become very attached to your character.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> pirates, this is my first post so ..your site is great, a perfect pirate sanctuary <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> . I must tell you that i am worried about game( sailing) speed too. If speed of the ship is like on the video that is ridiculous and not fun at all,It s like you are on `JET-SKI` <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> .If speed is like on the video( `JET-SKI`) that means you will need a few sec. to navigate aroand Caribbean :x . And that kind of speed will kill open sea sailing and gameplay. Like many of you, sailing was the part I enjoyed most in the original Pirates( and map too) and i think that without it the game will become boring, and the only 1 who will play it will be 2yrs. old kids who will think that they are playing a `JET-SKI` race game. I hope that open `sea-sailing` will be possible and that the game speed won t be `JET-SKI` ...or i will <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />:

Welcome to PA! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I really do hope as well that it is indeed slower. But still the game looks very fun and addictive indeed - can't deny that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->But still the game looks very fun and addictive indeed - can't deny that.  <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->, yes you are right, but if the speed is `JET-SKI` i think that we will get sick off it soon ,imagine sailing that(`JET-SKI`) arcade style for an hour or more without open `see-sailing` <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" /> it will be like Crash Bandicot `Jet-Ski` level on Ps2, thet is for 2yrs.old top.We can only hope thet will bee an `in-game` options to reduce it or that clips always look quicker than what normal gameplay is, so that we can have open `sea-sailing`. And thnx. for hospitality mates <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> P.S sory for spelling errors (if i made any...i don t know)

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->cause didnt find it on the official one<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
me neither, and i don't want to sign on to gamesport and eat spam...can someone post where the video is besides at gamespot? thanks...

anyway, without seeing the video someone above alluded to what is probably the explanation. they certainly can't give you an overview of the game in a 30 second video by "going game speed", so i'm sure the speed is accentuated so as to show you as much as they can without making the video a 500 meg download. BUT <i>that's just my opinion and i could be wrong...</i> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

The worrying part is that Jeff and other people from Atari hvae avoided the gamespeed questions....

Usually the people behind games also avoid to tell the good news but as soon as they can tell good news they do so....

Based on that the gamespeed is the thing that make all of us nervous in here they should have told us if there was optionable gamespeed...

If it is true that one career will take you 5 hours then this game will not be as fun as origional pirates (at least not for me) where one career could take one year to play. You need time to develop feelings where you live and breath the Pirate life as your pirate..... and each time you start a new career you need to start that process over again.....

I suppose this is an issue for our betatesters to focus on..... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

im not sure if it was 5 hours, but i think they did make it so one nights gaming was a career, i wonder if they make it so you have kids and they take over??

And welcome UB to this piratey little place we call ARRGH! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
