Firing on ports with spacebar, any effect?

I haven't seen many people mention this, and my friend found it last night by accident (and I verified it). When sailing by ports you can hit space bar to open fire on them!

But it doesn't seem to do anything? I think you can make a port hostile towards you this way, so you dont haev to land near it and then walk into it to attack it, but it doesn't seem to effect troop count or anything.

However, last night, I did bomb on a fort for like `1-2` minutes while it was firing at me, then sailed AWAY (so it dissapeared off screen), came back and it had gone down by 20 troops. Could have been a coincedince however.

Aye mate, defintetly makes em hostile so ye can attack em,ye think it would knock troop levels down, not sure about it though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I believe if you bomb it long enough that the economy will drop a level. Not sure, never tried it myself. Can't remember where I heard it either. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

If you bombard the port long enough, the economy will definitely drop. Also,if there is a fort, eventually it will disappear...

If you bomb it long enough, the fort itself will explode, but then the town fires at you. I haven't noticed any difference in troop count, but I have used it to draw out a pirate hunter or two. (I'm a pirate `hunter-hunter`.)

Cool,didn't know the forts would explode,I'd be kinda partial te blow'n things up <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

hmm well the fort can get bigger when more troops arrive at the city (i've seen it happen when a troop ship arrived downwind about 5 seconds before i made it to the city from upwind. Was really annoying, turned a certain sacking into an impossible battle <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

That's when you go to the nearest native village and get the chief to attack for you first, Large. Just remember to escort the canoes there, because they will be attacked by pirates.

I have found that firing on town and forts does lower troop count. But not a lot. I fired in a rather large fort for about a minute or so, checking on the troop count on the world map. It did go down about 10 men every couple of passes. So forts are REALLY tough to crack. (good) But I decimanted a town without a fort. Before I knew it I had allmost eliminated to garrison. But the money took a hit as well.
