Nathan, you spoke some weeks ago of modding the fighting in POTC... what about that? Maybe I missed a couple of thread where it have been said that the idea doesn't work but... what about that now?

Nope, I've just been doing too much at once, and beagle-style following my nose. So the it's not dead, no, I just haven't worked on it yet.
(A'course it'd be wonderful-great if someone else picked it up and ran with it...)

Can someone help me where to find the code responsible for the fencing? Especially i'm interested in the part, that calculates if we blocked the enemy's attack when we were blocking, or not. I would like to do some researches. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

*bump*

If anyone ever does work on the fencing or modelling realistic damage based on the type of sword used (taking into account weight of the blade and where the weight is distributed for cuts, thrust velocity, size of the point and length of the blade and stiffness for piercing), then the following article on the effects of rapier and sabre blows on the human body might prove useful. Based largely on anecdotal evidence from witnesses to duels involving rapiers it serves to show what affects the result of a thrust or cut and how soon after a serious wound a person is likely to become incapacitated and/or die. Certainly rather rubbishes the in-game affect of having an uber-sword that kills nigh on everyone in one cut or thrust. According to this article, complacency in a duel having seemingly inflicted a fatal blow tended to result in the 'winner's death.

Of course I have no idea how the game determines damage taken in terms of number of HP lost to weapon strikes. I'd imagine its based on a combination of hit points of the combatants and the type and quality of the blade.

Very interesting link, thank you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Certainly not the kind of honorous, noble dueling we know from Errol Flynn movies <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

You are right, bladedamage in PotC is simply a product calculated from weaponquality, characterskills and a random factor.

I still can't believe the conclusion to the Lagarde v Bazanez duel...even after all that both survived! It was interesting to read of the active role of seconds in duels. TV/Movies seem to present the idea that all they ever did was be there for moral support. The case involving Bussy D'Ambrose shows how dangerous being a second might prove to be.

Was equally interesting to read that in the bizarre duel of Duke of B v Lord B that both began with pistols but did very little damage to each other with them. Makes you wonder whether the accuracy of pistols in the POTC game ought to be reduced somewhat. As it is, its rather easy to kill an opponent from quite a range with a decent long pistol, scrapper or one of the more recently added guns. Ought to seek out some evidence of the accuracy of flintlocks really.
