Fastest ship for traveling INTO the wind on the main map?

Hmmm, I should have specified, ship larger than Pinnace <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Sloops are probably the best for running towards the wind. Though it's always better to try to keep it close hauled rather than into the eye. No ship is worth a crap into the eye.

In the `Pirate-o`-pedia description of the various Brig types it seems to claim one of their best sailing locations is "Into the wind" or am I misreading that?

It certainly doesn't seem like the Brig sails that well into the wind. I've taken to using a Royal Sloop for my eastern travels.

If you look at the manual you will see two ship catagories that have a RIW (running into wind) best point of sailing capability. The three Brigs and I'm not positive about the other group as I'm not at home right now. It's another big ship class that isn't fast overall but can sail into the wind decently. It may be the Galleons but I'm not positive. Just look in your manual and look for ships listed with RIW sailing.

Yes, I've seen them in the manual, but I'd swear they're just as horrible as the other ships running into the wind. I thought the Brig would be good because it was listed that way, but it was slower than the Sloop.

Just because it's listed with RIW as one of the best sailing points doesn't mean it's very fast in doing that. It just means that it's faster than the other ships, it can utilize the wind better that way. It wont go fast, it just wont come to a complete halt like the galleons and frigates will.
It's completely illogical to sail fast straight towards the wind.

Notes that if you sail against the wind, you can see your sails are blown flat. Ship will be at the slowest in this case. However, if you sail at a slight angle of the wind direction, say about +/- 30 degree angle, you can see your ship sailing faster. If you think about how sails work, you won't have trouble sailing eastward. Keep in mind, you have sail with the wind. I believe in most case, you can't sail direction eastward, but you can sail north/south eastward with no problem.
