DirectX 9

I just realized as I was starting up my POTC game, that when the first window comes up it says "Initializing DirectX 8".

But I have DirectX 9. It came with my computer and when I installed POTC it said I already have 9. Anyway to change it so it runs DirectX 9 and not 8?

That means what _level_ of Direct3D is in use, i.e. what level (if any) of pixel and vertex shaders (and other features) your graphics card supports.
IIRC:
DX6 = straight 3D.
DX7 = that plus T&L - Geforce 1
DX8 = version 1.0 of pixel and vertex shaders - Geforce3
DX9 = version 2 of PS/VS, Geforce 5xxx / ATI 9x000 and above.
