confusing bug

true_blue

Powder Monkey
Hiya I only started playing the mod today so I am still brand new to it all but I am pretty sure this must be a bug...

I was on the start Island (Barbados?) and I spoke to the guy next to a little hut at the port and he said the workers have been saying I am a bad boss and mistreat them or something like that.. and I chose to teach them a lesson by beating sense into them or something along those lines..

Anyway a band of thugs started attacking me and everyone in the port, they killed the guards, vendors etc and then before I could kill 2-3 of them the game said "WARNING AMBUSH" or something alike in the top left corner.. then English guards appeared from the dock and started killing everyone plus coming after me... After dying a few times and reloading I tried to escape to the town and saw that the guards were slaughtering everyone, then after a few seconds the WARNING AMBUSH thing came again.

My quicksave is right after initiating the battle so am not sure what to do or how to make things go back to normal.

But I am very confused as to what the heck it was all about.. its got to be a bug right??

Also, I ran into another small bug in a house.. I offered to guard the womans house at night and the next morning I asked for a reward and then a burglar appeared, so I killed him.. and spoke to the women and again another burglar appeared and kept repeating.. It seems that maybe this only happens if I go to ask for my reward while she is still upstairs. It stopped doing it when I waited for her to go downstairs..

I am on Build 14 beta 2.2 light

Cheers

You learned a lesson there. Don't talk to that guy! He can actually come in useful later on in the storyline against the French. It is early in the game so you should probably just start over and concentrate on improving your melee skill with Malcolm.

I never tried guarding a two story house. The burglars always came through the roof.

The guy in port you talked to is a BuildingSet character. As such, he thinks you are his boss and offers the usual BuildingSet dialogs.
This also includes the chance for random attacks.

However, I thought I had replaced that particular guy's dialog a LONG time ago. :shock

ah ok so theres no way to salvage my save? Also what does the English Ambush on its own settlement have to do with it? hehe

Can't you run away from the ambush and reload to another location? When you're back, they should no longer be there.

Yep I should be able to do that.. I was just worried that they would be there forever or the vendors and such wouldn't respawn anymore. Will try escaping to the Tavern and sleep there the night hehe...

This is actually one instance that the sidestep collision thing is useful to get away from them :p

Cheers!

Well I managed to get the game back to normal by escaping and waiting a day.

I have ran into a few more little bugs and thought I'd post them here rather than making a new thread..

- My gold amount on the character screen is always @ 500 and it never changes.

- I can't select a different ship other than my flagship on the store's trade window.

- Sometimes I can't click the left/right quantity arrows to purchase/sell things

- Can't seem to swap goods with another ship in my fleet, I get the same problem above where the left/right arrows are un-clickable - and yup I have space.

- Occasionally, I will load a game and won't be able to move until either a crew member or a random passer-by initiates conversation after a few seconds and then once I exit dialogue I can move again.

- Sometimes when I talk to someone, I exit dialogue and then it re-opens with the same person by itself.

- I also get a similar problem where I can't use any function other than fast travel which fixes it. This sometimes happens when sailing and the only way to fix it then is to press F2 and exit. Not sure if this is linked with the one above.

- Had an instance where my game kept CTD when entering Sea from the ships wheel. I was able to get around this by fast travelling off the ship and back on.

- My Heavy Lugger first ship disappeared after I captured a Pirate Xebac.. which doesn't make sense because I didn't even interact with the Lugger in any way while capturing the Xebac. I asked the Pirate Captain of the new ship to be my officer and assigned him as Captain. Lost all of the Luggers cargo too.. as well as the officer.

- Quicksaved and the game froze then after ending and restarting the game was corrupt. I assume this is probably because of the original bug of overwriting savegames. But couldn't save normally because I had some relic from a monk. :(

So gunna restart.. hopefully won't be so messed up this time hehe.

Not complaining :) Just thought I would let you know so you can look into it..

Cheers!

1. That is your personal wealth. It gives you fame and you get more if you get a Letter of Marque and are awarded land upon promotion. The "Crew money" listed is the normal money.

2. You've got two ships in your fleet? Do you get the "different ship selection window" at all?

3. Do you have enough money for the transaction? I remember that can make the buttons stop working.

4. Very strange. Worked last time I tried, but that was quite a long time ago...

5. I have seen that sometimes after a Self Dialog, a lot of game functions no longer work. After doing a regular dialog with any character at all, things are back to normal.

6. Random citizens may sometimes talk to you at random. This sometimes happens straight after closing the dialog too, but should be pretty rare.
I thought there was some code in place to prevent this from happening with the same character though. :facepalm

7. On your CTDs, we've got some game stability improvements in the next update due at the end of the month. Hopefully that will help.

Some of those issues of your are real weird and I've got no clue where that comes from. :modding

Ah ok that makes sense about the 500 gold thanks!!

Well I get the selection window but the other ship is just not clickable.. nothing happens when I click it and I can only seem to click my flagship.

Yeah I had enough money.. hmm

You know that I think about it, I think the above problems could be because I agreed to escort someone.. but it confused me because the very first ship I was able to access was not the Heavy Lugger.. it was a Light Fluyt.

I think this would also explain why I lost my Heavy Lugger, because I swapped captains and I captained the Fluyt (which could have been the escort ship).. So when I finished the escort the guy must have taken my ship instead of his.

Thinking this wasn't possible in vanilla.. I don't remember being able to interact with the escort ships or them being part of my fleet and thats probably what confused me.. lol

Maybe you could add something in future to prevent this kind of confusion? Or am I a special case?:p

I have encountered another bug (I think)... very often, the game interface including the character portrait and date, console etc disappear after exiting dialogue and only appear again when I re-initiate and exit dialogue with someone.
Thinkin this could be a bug with the brown interface because last time I played I used the blue one and never had this issue.

EDIT:
Oh one more thing... I find that after recalibrating the controls to my preferred method with the arrow keys instead of WSAD and return instead of spacebar I still need to use WSAD and spacebar in conversation.. is it possible to change this around so I can scroll/select with arrow keys / return?

Also wonder if you can make it possible to scroll with the mouse wheel one day?

Cheers and sorry if I have wasted your time with my own carelessness. (assuming I am right about the escort thing).. :)

If the WHOLE interface disappears, try pressing F9 once or twice and see if that helps.

For the controls, open PROGRAM\CONTROLS\DefaultControls.h with Notepad and edit it as you want.
Then load your game, select Reset Controls to Default in the Options menu and things should work the way you want.

For some reason after re-assigning keys it stopped doing it.

I have been trying to capture a french light frigate for 2 hours.. everytime I either finish boarding or they surrender the game crashes to desktop. For the boarding I think its something to do with the corpses because my FPS drops dramatically when walking over/looting them. But for the surrender I actually had a chance to save and didn't :( Then when I was opening a chest i got a CTD.

UPDATE: Managed to make them surrender and this time I saved hehe.. but the chest in the captains cabin caused a CTD again. So maybe there is something wrong with the chest on the Light Frigate or could it be the contents of the chest causing the crash? No idea what if anything is in there though.

Cheers!

I've heard about looting on boarding crashes before. Perhaps the game stability improvements in the next update will help.
Something else you can try is disabeling the Corpsemode in Options>Advanced Options and enabling Auto Loot instead.
Then you don't have to loot corpses anymore, which decreases the chance for CTDs.

Will try that but I had a feeling auto looting would be more likely to cause a crash due to looting upto a dozen enemies at once - unless the looting is done as the enemy dies as opposed to all at once after the battle. I'll see how it goes!

Cheers!

The looting is done as the enemy dies. You get his money, sword and gun, but no additional items with Auto Looting.
It definitely doesn't harm game stability to use it. In fact, I'm wondering if we should swap to that setting by default in the next modpack update.

I had constant CTDs when boarding also. The CTDs were so common that I avoided all fighting and played as an honest merchant only.
The best fix to date is in the next patch, and it has nearly eliminated CTDs while boarding. What you can do for now is not loot corpses. Or better yet, not loot at all and save as soon as the battle is over before you sail away. Or try that autoloot thingy, which I never tried.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Strangely I haven't had a CTD while boarding since I made the post so fingers crossed it was a one off just with that ship for whatever reason! I have boarded some really huge ships too (ship o war, war galleon, battleships, heavy frigates) and no crash even though I looted every corpse hehe. I can't help myself!!! 6,000,000 gold and still can't help looting a crappy sword >.<

Tried auto-looting nevertheless but it doesn't loot everything as you said and it only seems to loot corpses that I personally killed.. crewmen/party kills don't seem to be looted which is a big shame :(

I think maybe the contents of the players inventory probably has a lot to do with the CTD's though.. if you have a lot of crap with you and open up a corpse it takes a while to open.. same as when you go to a weapon vendor.
I don't see why anyone would need to swap items with a corpse though so maybe its possible to remove the player inventory from the corpse looting window somehow? Or atleast have it as an option.. That should help stability I think.. whether its possible though is the big question!

Could also be to do with a few specific items that are glitchy and happen to be in the players inventory when looting.. maybe something that is stacking when its not supposed to etc could cause the crash.

Anyway have played the mod a while now and I really love it :) I can't believe how good a job you guys have done to be honest! Its exactly how the game should have been and more!

Been making a list of stuff I think could be a bug so will post it here over the next few days and see what you guys think! Hopefully it will help you identify some stuff you can fix for the upcoming patch!

Cheers!
