Character and Ship Names

I figured I’d try and contribute something besides bugs. I noticed the character names and ship names can sometimes be weird or repetitive. So, in my spare time (i.e. – at work lol), I’ve been beefing up those two files. So far, I’ve completed the English male names, female names, family names, and ship names. Basically, I used the US census and a UK poll for the names. If I remember right, I put in a little over 800 male names, 500 female names, and 1600 family names. As for the ship names, Wikipedia had a list of every ship name ever used by the British. That put me at a little over 4000 names for British ships. I’ve tried to weed out spelling errors and doubles, but that is a lot of names lol. I’m going to keep working on this and try to beef up all the countries’ names and ships names. This is probably not a big deal to most of you, but I just thought I’d try to do something to add to the game since you all have been adding so much enjoyment for me. I'll post the files when I get them done. It may be a couple of weeks.

that sure sounds like a major improvement to me. i've been having just a little too many of those 'hey, didn't i kill you a few months ago?' moments. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=")" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> however, now we have almost countless different english names, but still the same amount of french, portugese, spanish, and dutch names. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> i could do the dutch names though. the excisting ones are wrong most of the time anyway.

Just thought I'd update you on my progress.

For character names, I am at:

Holland - 3982 Male, 3210 Female, 1045 Surnames
England - 816 Male, 501 Female, 1651 Surnames

For ship names, I am at:

England - 4277
France - 827
Holland - 253

Pretty unbalanced numbers, I know. I've been bouncing around from one country to another just so I don't go insane trying to understand any one language lol. The ship names have been pretty interesting to research because I've been learning some history about each countries navy and some of these ships. I honestly didn't know that the Dutch navy gave the British and French navies a run for their money back in the olden days. As for the character names, I've been using censuses and baby name sites to get a broad range. I'm taking my time with the British because I'm trying to stick to names that sound like they would be British in origin.

One question I had was that their isn't a variable range for the Pirate nation in the document with the rest of the character names. How exactly does the game generate names for pirates? I was thinking that maybe there is coding somewhere to randomly pull names from any of the countries. If not, maybe this should be how they are generated. Granted the voice for the pirate characters in this game sounds a lot like the British voice, but I'm thinking the Pirates nation would be like the mutts of the Caribbean.

Regardless, the current way, at least current as of build 13 (I haven't tried 14) seems broken. When I capture a pirate captain, his name is usually Thierry Bartolone. Seriously, I can remember it without having played for a few days, that's how often it is. If not that, like say I've already got a pirate by that name in my hold, the next captain is probably either Deadly Pirate or doesn't have a name.

Anyways, I'm going to keep building up these files so that someday you will be able to never run into the same individual again or sink the exact same ship 10 instances in a row.

Is there a timeframe for build 14 being done? I'd read in another thread that it might be done soon and I'd like to contribute this to it if you'd have it. It shouldn't be a difficult add or need any troubleshooting.
