Capturing Towns

Just got the game 2 days ago, and I am a little confused as to what one has to do to completely take over a town like you could in the original game. So far, I was only able to attack a town once or twice and the only thing I got from it was gold. Does anyone know the logistics of taking a town over and what towns are eligable for attack, so to speak. Thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

If you will take over a town is dependent on how many men you have and how many men the town has I believe.

I dont know exactly how many men you need though?

Pay attention to what the stranger in the tavern tells you about any towns - whether they have a strong garrison or weak, and how many men... That will tell you whether they are easy to conquer, or not - and it depends upon how many men you have in relation to theirs...

To KEEP a town is tricky, as you need to be sure that a garrison of your own country's soldiers can get there before anybody else. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Not quite sure how you might do that, tho... I didn't run into that in the betatest. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Also. to open hostilities with the town, fire a couple shots at it while you are sailing towards it by pressing the space bar. They'll fire back and it will open up the option to attack the town

Wow great, I didn't know that. Ah, dammit for only having the pirated version yet. I thought the original was better at this, because you got the option to sail into town, attack the town or sneak into town. I didn't know of the "spacebar" feature, thanks alot.

.. oh and the reason I didn't ask was because I don't think I'm entitled to, with a pirated copy and all. Still buy the original when it arrives though...

Ye still 'ave dem options ye posted above mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah well i got a clonecd version with my own key.. But i do not get that option to "sail in, sneak in, attack" not even after ive shot like 200 shots on the city.. Anyone got any solution to this ?

Ye have te have a certain amount of crew before de option opens up,iI'd be 'ave'n a war galleon wid a crew O' 325 before de option would open up <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

It seems to me any city needs to be attacked twice to be captured. That is before troop reinforcements come in. I've had pretty good luck so with flipping everything spanish to english. And those filthy french too. I've got a hunkering that they won't be able to blockade the Colonies against the british might with no support in the carribean!

Aye ,play'n Seadogs an POTC I'd be good at gett'n me sea legs fer battle,dem land battles, I'd be 'ave'n a problem gett'n me land legs tew werk <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

There are several ways to attack a town, as well as results.

1. If you are terribly outnumbered, you cannot launch an assault from Land or Sea, however, you can sneak into town.

2. Upon rallying enough crew to challenge a town, you begin a Land Battle, wherein you must strategically defeat the enemy to ransack the town.

3. Once you succeede in defeating enough of the town's militia a Rampart Duel begins.

4. Upon defeating the Captian of the Guard and eliminating any residual threat, you are given the oppurtunity to replace the governor with a nationality of your choosing (thus winning a great deal of favor and possible rank with this nationality).

Instead of bombarding a town from the ocean (risking damage to your ship and provoking the pirate hunters), why not land your vessel down the coast of a targeted town.

One last thing, settlements (small town without crew or Governor's) can not be attacked; along with Missions and Indian Villages.

I just discovered how to attacke any town, any time. March in on foot, and you'll have the choice between Leave town, Enter the town (or it it's an enemy town - Sneak into town) or Attack the town. I have a feeling that you're not meant to attack the time from sea anyway in this version, because when you sail into it with a ship, you'll only enter it automatically. Also, shooting cannons at it only depletes the wealth, so if you want to attack a wealthy, friendly town, just go in on foot.

Well, I am not sure if shooting the town depletes the wealth or not, but I do know that the manual mentions firing at the town to open the option to attack the town. I'll experiment with some game saves with the whole depletion thing though and see if it makes a difference in the amount plundered.

i just plundured 2 english towns nutin happend i just got money thats all.. duh i want a town <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

You DO NOT have to be at war with the nation. You can attack friendly ports by hitting the spacebar as you near the port to fire on them - when they fire back, you can enter town an the option to attack or sneak in will be there.

To install a Governor of a town you just sacked, you MUST outnumber the number troops by at least twice. It helps too if the town has around 100 or so when you attack.

Cap'n Toast: have you tried walking into a friendly town on foot? "Park" your ship close to the town and walk up to it with your guys, and you'll get the option of attacking them (if you have enough men that is... otherwise it's just blurred out). From my own experiences, attacking the town with the spacebar almost always depletes their wealth, so I always WALK into town, and attack.

Been saying it a few times now.

It seems that shooting a town from the sea reduces the wealth of the town (from wealthy => poor) as well as reducing the inbuilt garrison, but only to a certain level (you won't be able to reduce it to 0). According to another thread, you have to win by a large margin to be able to instil a governer, so use those buccaneers and some clever tactics!
